Why does your '98 Toyota Rav4 buck and jump during take-off and while driving?
You can clean this yourself if you want to try. You will need an old tooth brush, a can of carb cleaner (available at any discount store) and a Phillips screwdriver. You need to take the large black tube off the throttle body then while holding the throttle plate open spray some carb cleaner into the chamber. Then use the tooth brush to clean the walls and the throttle plate. It may take a couple of tries to get it clean and varnish free. Then reconnect the large tube and start the engine. It will not start right up, since you added the carb cleaner, but after a little longer cranking it should fire up (and yes smoke for a short time). Once cleaned the idle should return to normal and the gas pedal should stop sticking in the morning. If the check engine light came on after doing the cleaning just remove the EFI fuse from the fuse panel under the hood for about 60 sec. and it should reset.

I just spent 2 hours trying to figure it out myself! I took apart much more than was required because I was told I had to remove "several" screws. Also that it was a 30 minutes to an hour job to replace the filters.
The reality is that one (1) screw had to be removed and it shouild've taken less than 10 minutes to complete the job.
Here is what you should do:
Open the Glove Box Door.
Remove the screw that is on the right side nearest the hinge. (10mm hex or Phillips head screwdriver)
The door and box come out by moving the unit toward the right.
You can now see the heater core box (black plastic housing) and the inside/outside air door (white plastic housing). If you slide the selector you will see it move.
Immediately to the left of the inside/outside air intake is a one (1") inch wide black strip that is eight or nine inches tall. The retaining tabs wrap over the top and the bottom edges. I pried down on the bottom tab and pulled forward and lifted upward. Then I slide it to the right a bit to access the top filter.
I pulled out the top half of the filter. I then pushed the bottom half of the filter upward to clear the steel framework and slide it out the same way as the top half came out.
Slid in the the bottom filter observing air flow direction (right to left) and slid it to the bottom and then the top filter slides right snug on top.
Snap the 1 inch wide cover back in place.
Slide the door back into place and secure with the one screw and you are done!

Purchase a cheap funnel from a automotive store, and try using that. best to have a spare person to hold funnel, and you control the pouring. every 10 secs, check the oil level. You do not want too much oil!!!! :) if you're wondering why it goes in so slowly, its because there is a "baffle" just under the cap that slows down oil going in to prevent the oil from filling up the top of the cylinder head with oil, thus allowing oil into the intake through the pcv vent or pcv valve itself. when this happens its a smoky startup and that oil is then lost because it gets burnt up in the combustion chambers.

Here's how to program a new remote: You do not need the key in the ignition. Take a metal paper clip and make it into a "U" shape. Connect together pins 4 and 8 on the OBDII connector by the driver's left knee.(See picture below) This is a connector with 2 rows of 8 slots near the hood release. Counting from left to right, top row, place one end of the paper clip in slot 4 and the other end of the paper clip in slot 8. You should then hear the horn chirp. Now hold down the lock and unlock buttons on the keyless remotesimultaneously until the horn honks (should be about 15 sec.), that one is now set. Now hold the lock and unlock buttons on the second keyless remoteand so on until the horn honks. (You can program up to 4 remotes). The remotes are now programmed. Pull out the paper clip, and your done.

In the case of our 2010 RAV4, a mobile mechanic in orange county, ca was reseting for me today the odometer had to be in the "trip A" not the ODO vehicle miles displayed,
tried it three times with the ODO displaying total miles and it would not reset, then did the same procedure but had the ODO in trip "A" and it worked first time perfectly.
You will know it worked because the "maint" light will flash and then go out, shut off the ignition and start the car to confirm it has reset (the "maint" light will go out after starting the car).

-4 Quarts of Toyota Genuine ATF WS
-New Gasket & Filter
-Funnel
-Rags
First, you must locate the transmission fluid dipstick and drain plug. On the 2007 Rav4, the drain plug is located under the plastic guard underneath the truck on the driver side.
Secondly, once you drain all the transmission fluid, remove the bolts (17-18 bolts) on the transmission pan. Pry the pan loose. Be very careful not to bend the pan. Clean the magnets and put them back in their original location. Reinstall the new filter and put the new gasket on the pan and reinstall the bolts back in.
Then, once you accomplish all of the above, use the funnel and add 3 quarts of the new transmission fluid through the dipstick tube. (Don't want to start putting all 4 quarts in til you see the correct level.) Start the car and continously check the level on the dipstick. Put your foot on the brakes and cycle each gear about 3 seconds between each shift.
Finally, once the above is accomplished, with your car in idle, check the level on the dipstick again. Make sure the fluid level is close to HOT lines on the dipstick. Pay attention closely and do not overfill.
After driving about 10 miles down the road, with the car in park and idling re-check it again to ensure it is where it needs to be on the dipstick.
