Yes it's a beautiful and fun vacation spot. Me and my family went last year and it was the best holiday I've ever had in my life. The food is beautiful and cheap! Some fish there are $5 and in America they would be $350! The scuba diving is magnificent, the sea was warm and there were what seemed like thousands of different kinds of fish as well as turtles, manter-rays, dolphins and harmless small sharks! The beaches on the Islands are clear and unpolluted There are lots of activities you do to including windsurfing and snorkeling Even in Monsoon season, the Maldives is amazing, after many hours of sun, you see the incredible clouds coming in from the horizon and the rain is so fun to walk in, and it's warm. The Maldives is an amazing destination, just go there.

Can you board the cruise at a later port of call?
Most lines do not allow boarding part way though a voyage as their check in facilities are at the embarkation port. Also many of the customs agreements do not allow it on cruises that cross international borders.

Depends on the family,their interests and age of the children. It can also depend on where you live and if you want something different. Go skiing or the beach is both great places for small children and shopping nearby is a must for me. But spending all day on the beach for a week would kill me so I do require some culture in form of museums or something. And why stay in the same spot the whole vacation? Spend half in the big city and the other half at the beach. What country depends on how much money you have, where you already live and how much time you have. No fun spending 1-2 days traveling if you only have 1 week and then trying to adjust to the time difference.
