How do you drain the gas from a 1970's Beetle?

Get John Muirs -"How to keep your Volkswagen alive, A manual for the Compleat Idiot" and Bentleys "workshop manual". They have a huge amount of info, John Muir is a "real world" work-book and the Bently Manual is the VW "Official Workshop Manual" . Well i would either disconnect the fuel line that comes from the chassis metal line to the rubber fuel line to the motor behind the drivers side rear wheel, just get another fuel line and hurry and put on the metal tube so you can direct it where you want it. Or you can disconnect it under the tank in front, on the Passenger(?) side from the rubber line to the metal line that goes into the chassis.

How do you tell a 1977 Beetle from a Super Beetle?

A Beetle has a shock front suspension whereas a Super Beetle has McPherson struts. A Beetle has a flat windshield, Super has curved windshield from 73 on, but has a flat windshield in 71 and 72. Front hood on Beetle is narrow and comes to more of a point. Super looks wider and is more rounded. Supers are also known as Fat Chicks.

ALL Supers have the McPherson strut so just look under the front hood in tire well and see if it has the "shock" inside the coil spring. The standard Beetles all have the same style from the A pillar back as the supers. 73 and later also has a big curved dash.

Lastly, in 1977 the only Super was a convertible, 75 was the last year for a Super Beetle Sedan in the USA. All '77 convertibles are Supers. VW Beetle, Super Beetle history/FAQ, here is a link: http://www.superbeetles.com/faq.htm

http://www.vwshowtime.com/8_history/history_e2.html

The short answer is the only 77 Super Beetle was a convertible, no Super Sedans in 77, so if you have a US 77 Beetle Sedan it is not a Super Beetle.

71-72 Supers are AKA 1302, 73 and later known as 1303.

no actually the 1973 model (which i drive) is actually a beetle not a super because 73 was the year that VW changed to making only supers so you've got half beetles and the others supers but the only thing different is the front clip anywhere from dash board back is actually the same as a regular beetle but the other answer that i just improved is also correct they did go to the McPherson's strut for the front end so any where from 1974 on up are supers unless modified.

What type of gear lube do you use in a 1967 volkswagen beetle?

What would cause a VW Beetle to cut off shortly after startup and take a while before it will start again?

From experience, a problem with the fuel system, possibily a clogged filter, faulty relay, or faulty pump.

It can also be the "Automatic Choke" on the carburater-especially on older models. It sticks and then when the motoer cools down it opens back up. Its located on the right side in a circular housing. If your car is staring up after cooling down it would be a good guess.

How do you replace a headlight in a 2004 VW Beetle?

This answer applies to a 2004 Beetle. It might work for other Beetles, too. It's a surprisingly easy fix, even though it means removing the entire headlight assembly.

  1. The first step is to open the hood. If you're attempting this repair, you've probably already opened the hood numerous times to fill windshield fluid, check and add oil, and for other engine-compartment maintenance and repair. It should also go without saying that you should do this with the lights in the off position, and with power off in the car.
  2. Under the leading edge of both the passenger and driver's side fender inside the engine compartment, you can see part of the headlight assembly. There is a hook-like lever extending at about 45 degrees toward the hood. This is the most difficult part - identifying the lever. It's very hard to take a picture of it, and it's difficult to distinguish from other parts if you haven't done this maintenance before.
  3. Pull the lever toward the fender and hood. Don't force it. Apply gentle pressure, perhaps using the side of a screwdriver or other tool, until you feel a gentle "pop" or a disconnect of the locked plastic parts.
  4. Gently push the headlight assembly capsule forward toward the lens, using your hands or a tool. Some people describing this procedure find it the most difficult - you are sliding the assembly on its tracks which are most likely caked with dirt, and against the pressure of a rubber seal and some adhesive (Note: don't attempt to remove the lens or any outside part of the headlamp; this will just break the internal seals and possibly subject your new bulb to wet and dirty conditions).
  5. Once the lamp assembly slides out of the fender, you'll see the power wire (near the front) attached with a plastic clip. Carefully unlock the clip and remove the wire connector.
  6. Place the headlight assembly on a working surface with some protection to avoid scratching the lens.
  7. At the back of the housing is a fairly large black plastic cover with a plastic clip. Remove to reveal the bulb assembly.
  8. Unlatch the wire clip holding the bulb in the larger assembly. Disconnect the wire clip on the back of the bulb and install the new bulb. Note the orientation of the bulb base (it is basically a circle with a slice out of one side). As you may know, touching the glass of halogen bulbs usually reduces their life because of the oils and other substances on your fingers. However, unlike many home light fixtures, the ample metal base makes it unlikely that you'll have to touch the bulb itself (if you need to, use a cloth or paper towel).
  9. Reconnect the power cable; you may also wish to clean the guide rails and lubricate them with dry lubricant before you return the assembly in its place.
  10. Line up the assembly guides with the guide rails (this may take several tries; and there are three, the first two engaging at 9 and 6 o'clock positions). Some guides suggest lifting the lever to engage the assembly, although a firm push may be all that's necessary.
  11. You may have already tested the lamp on step nine. If not, put the key in the ignition and turn on the lights. Also, check the rubber gasket where the assembly meets the fender, and adjust it for best fit. If this is the second time you've done this, it's taken you all of 5 minutes; if not, this may have been an hour repair/replacement.

What is wrong when a 1991 Cavalier gets warmed up then dies at stop signs?

Check the EGR valve. It might be stuck open. This will cause the car to die when you come to a stop sign or when idling. You can temporarily disconnect the vacuum hose at the EGR valve and plug the vacuum line. Drive it around and see if the problems reoccurs. If it doesn't happen again, you found your problem.

AnswerIt can also be the seleniod in the transmision. The seleniod is bad and gets stuck. There is a 4 plug connector on the front of the tranny. You can disconnect it and the car will run fine but get it changed within 50000 miles or you will burn up your tranny. Its a temporary fix but it works if you dont have the money right there and then.

Both answers are right answers...... But heres the way to find out. When your driving and it dies at a light or stop sign, put the transmission in "neutral" or "park" and restart the engine..... if it hesitates "or fails" to start, its the egr. if it starts up & runs good while not in gear then starts stalling when you put it in gear and drive, then it's likely the transmission shift solenoid is faulty. I replaced the shift solenoid once in a 1994 Cavalier RS 2.2L that had the very same problems you described & everything was fine after I replaced it. It only cost me $48.00 for the part & an hour and a half to do the work. Note: it is advised that you have really good knowledge of automatic transmissions before you do the work, although it is not hard to do. .
