Catherine Roerva Christen Pelzer was Dave Pelzer's mother, who passed away in 1992.

Catherine was an alcoholic who had been drinking from the age of 13. Brought up in the Mormon community of Salt Lake City, she would hide in the outhouse during Prohibition to wince down bootleg whiskey. Her parents were divorced, which made them outcasts in that religious community, and Catherine was frequently locked in a closet, denied food, and told how despicable she was.

Catherine suffered from alcoholism and was mentally ill. Her mental illness was Borderline Personality Disorder http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borderline_personality_disorder ('Witch'), which is characterized by an irrational fear of rejection and abandonment and self-hatred as a result of surviving a childhood that required complete submission to a hostile or sadistic caregiver (pg 131) Christine Ann Lawson of 'Understanding the Borderline Mother'.

No she was never brought to justice by the law, she died of natural causes (heart related) in 1992 in and all 5 of her sons and her mother were the only attendees at her funeral, in which as i am led to understand to "make sure that it was over".

The worst kinds of torture and child abuse are found in A Child Called It. Ammonia was forced down his throat; his arm was broken; his arm was burned on a stove; his face was shoved in a diaper. He was forced to sleep in a freezing basement. He received regular blows to his body. All of this abuse was from his mother.

No child can simply "deal" with something like this. Even adults have a hard time dealing with a sociopath. Remember they are very deceptive and subtle. Jerks are jerks. But sociopaths are nearly impossible to detect. I had a horrible childhood and I'm pretty sure my mother was/is either borderline or a sociopath. I love my mother like you would not believe and our relationship has gotten much better as I've gotten older. She also has mellowed a LOT and we are close. Back to the 10-year-old, I would've done much better as a child had I known it wasn't me causing her to act the way that she did. I couldn't understand how my mother was so friendly and wonderful to the outside world but such a nightmare to me and my father and my siblings behind closed doors. As a ten year old I thought it HAD to be me or us. WE were at fault. The best support you can give to a victim of a sociopath -- child OR adult is to constantly build their self esteem.

I wouldn't say it's common and I don't know what type of abuse you are having to put up with (mental, physical or both.) There are times when a third party can move into the home and if that person needs care, or, they are not contributing to that household, but are lazy and just laying around, then it can get very distressful for the couple. Even if the 3rd person is nice, if they don't give you and your partner any privacy this can cause problems in your relationship. It's obvious there is a problem with the 3rd person being there and you have to sit down with your partner and openly and honestly tell them how you feel. If you got along before, then you should be able to hash this out and come to some solution. Good luck Marcy

I HAVE A TWO YEAR OLD THAT WILL BE THREE IN SEPTEMBER. SHE IS JUST STARTING MAKE THE RIGHT WHISTLING SOUNDS. IT MAY TAKE HER A TIME OR TWO, BUT SHE IS DEFINITELY ON HER WAY ANSWER it really depends on each individual child. none of my 5 children can whistle properly (aged 1 - 11) my 34 year old sister cannot whistle but my 2 yr old nephew can.... everyone is different :)

personally my point of view is that the artwork is really nice but needs some colour, i love the use of patterns and shapes that barbara used, i think the artwork shows how much the mum cares about the child
