Air Compressors

I don't know about on a navigator...but on my 05 Town Car the unit is behind the glove box. Unscrew the glove box screws and the box will pull out, revealing the control board behind it. Since manufacturers tend not to reinvent the wheel with each model, the Navigator >might< have it's in the same place. Hope that helps, good luck!

Looking at the front of the engine, on the left hand side at the top is the power steering pump. Directly below that is the alternator and directly below the alternator is the compressor. AEasiest to get to from below.

You can better see the compressor if you lift up the vehicle......

The fuel pump relay is located on the passenger side firewall in a black mounted box, there are three more relays, which I believe are the a/c and ignition relay and one other behind the glove box which you would have to remove the box lining to get to. The computer is also located there.

in oilfree, there is no oil in the element screw cause the screw coating by Teflon in surface layers, so air outlet is free from oil.

They may be fuses #12, #14, or #15 My first check would be #14 in the center console fuse block

Air dusters compress air and make the dust flocculate. The process of flocculation is what makes the amount of dust particles in the air decrease; but infact, it just brings them together, just like H2 and O.

Probably not completely a do-it-yourself job, unless you want to become an ozone hole creator. Basic steps are as follows. This is a bit of a complex job to answer in sort of forum. For specifics on the nuts and bolts of removing the actual compressor, check your Chilton or Haynes manual or hopefully someone else will chime in.

Connect the car to a refrigerant recovery machine, pump the refrigerant into the recovery tank, remove the belt, remove and replace the compressor, reconnect recovery machine, pump out air and moisture, and recharge the refrigerant and oil.

When the system is opened, it's recommended to replace the filter drier (moisture will kill the a/c system).

A few notes: A refrigeration tech will collect the old refrigerant rather than releasing it to the atmosphere. It is a CFC, which neutralizes ozone in the atmosphere - hello global warming. Venting refrigerant is a federal crime.

Refrigerant is very costly nowadays. Even replacing it yourself you will spend about $60 or more on the refrigerant alone, if you can find it at all.

If you do it yourself, it's best to have a pro handle the refrigerant removal and recharge. If you don't, the open lines will likely collect moisture, which can lead to system failure of you new compressor or evaporator.

The air pump (compressor) is located on the driver side fender underneath the air filter box. Once you remove the air filter box, you will have to remove the compressor bolts from inside the wheel well.

To Install the compressor takes special tools to disconnect the hoses that carry refrigerant. It sounds like you already have the old one off, and want to install a new one. Just reverse the process you used to take the old one off. Make sure before charging the system that you have the proper amount of refrigerant oil in the system. Take care not to overcharge the sysyem.

You need a refrigerant recovery system so take it to a garage.

Make sure vehicle is on level ground. with ign. switch off turn off switch in trunk for suspension control. listen for air coming from any of the air bags. If no air then turn on ign. switch to run engine and then turn on air suspension switch. If this does not work then the ride level control is either disconnected or not hooked up correctly or worst case no good... It comes on long enough for the shocks to fill up and then shuts off. Is your car raised when it shuts off? If the shocks are in good shape without leaks, that's usually the time the compressor takes to pump up the shocks.

Open the hood, standing in front of the car, the compressor is located all the way on the right hand side(drivers) and all the way to the back(windshield) of the engine bay. it all the way on top of everything by the wheel well very easy to get to.

AC compressors will cycle like that when there is insufficient refrigerant.

an automotive AC has a thermostatic switch that cycles the compressor on and off in order to control the temperature within the evaporator core and keep it within a certain range, much like the thermostatic switch in a refridgerator.

A turbo does not recycle exhaust gas back into the intake stream, that is the job of an EGR (exhaust gas return) valve. A turbocharger works by using the expansion factor of a super heated gas passing from a compressed state to a non compressed state to rotate a turbine wheel on the turbine side of the turbocharger. This is the side that all of the exhaust gasses will go through once expelled by the engine. The exhaust gasses are then routed to the tail pipe via the exhaust system. The turbine wheel is attached to the compressor wheel by the turbo shaft. The compressor wheel draws filtered air from the air filter and compresses it. In a gas engine you must understand that the engine has what is called a mechanical compression ratio often noted like 9.5 to 1. In a turbocharged or supercharged gas engine you must combine the mechanical compression ratio and the % factor of the turbocharger or supercharger to get a configured compression ratio. A higher compression ratio in a gasoline will increase power output. In a diesel engine a turbo performs the same way but is used to match fuel to air more than to raise the compression ratios which are usually about 20 to 1 and can be higher. I believe that the term "gas compressor" is sometimes used to explain a turbocharger in the European market such as the Mercedes Kompressor. Many of my European friends refer to turbocharged cars as gas compressor engines. To the above author who wrote that the gas compressor compresses fuel; you need to understand Physics. You can't compress fluid. Fluids are pressurized by a restriction in the fluid stream, if there is no restriction, there is no pressurization. The gasoline is supplied in volume by the fuel pump and restricted to a point by the fuel pressure regulator which bypasses any amount of overpressure back to the fuel tank. Now to the EGR valve. This valve takes an amount of burnt or inert exhaust gas and introduces it back into the intake stream. This gas is inert (there are no fuel calories left in this gas to burn) and is used to lower combustion temperatures. Oxides of nitrogen (represented as NoX) are created at combustion temps of 2500 degrees F. and over. By introducing an inert gas (approx. 10%) there is less air and fuel by volume and therefore lower combustion temps.

Most likely, it is a stuck contactor or relay that controls the compressor motor. If the compressor continues to run after the blower inside the house has shut off, the only way to stop it is to kill the power, either at a dedicated switch or sub-panel for the air conditioning, or at your main breaker panel. Turn off the power to the air conditioning and furnace system until you can have the unit serviced.
