How do you remove an alternator from a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis?

Once you remove the intake cover, the alt. is now right in front of you. Disconnect the battery cable, release the tension on the belt, you will see a square ratchet drive slot around the pulley tensioner, insert the ratchet check which way to turn. Now remove the wire plugs into the alt. and just unbolt. Takes about 15 minutes to remove this.

Finally, reconnect the negative battery cable and start the vehicle to ensure proper operation.

When to replace the alternator in a Toyota Echo?

It's a complicated answer, as there is no real set in stone replacement interval. You can easily TEST your alternator whenever you want, using a simple $2 voltmeter. The volt reading on your car battery should go up by about 1-2 volts from when the car is not running, to when it is idling, this is one sign that the alternator is working and charging the battery.

For much more details, see the related link. This link also describes a different way to test your alternator.

For what its worth, I have a 2000 echo with over 170,000 miles on it, and the original alternator is still working fine. I've also only had to replace the car battery one time.

What is the purpose of a alternator?

A car alternator generates alternating current, then uses a rectifier to convert the alternating current to direct current, it charges your battery and supplies the current to run all the electrical systems in the car.

How can you tell if there is a bad connection between the battery and the alternator?

Use a vom meter, or battery tester and with the engine running voltage should be approximately 14.5 volts.

How do you get bolt out of alternator on 2004 kia optima it is loose but wont clear some kind of bracket so I can remove to pull alternator?

Removing Alternators

I'm not familiar with your vehicle, but have encountered the same problem with Ford and GM vehicles over many years.

When a bolt is too long to remove due to something else "blocking" it, it is sometimes necessary to remove the "offending" item, in your specific case the bracket.

For example, I once had a '79 Ford LTD that required the removal of the radiator fan shroud, AND the radiator to get the blasted 9 1/2 inch long alternator mounting/pivot bolt out.

Try different ways of moving the alternator and bolt around to allow removal, and if that's impossible, then you'll have to remove the offending bracket and whatever else is mounted on it.

How do you change the alternator in your 1994 Ford Bronco?

1- Pop the hood.

2- Disconnect the battery.

3- Disconnect the eletrical connections on the alternator and remember where they go.

4- Loosen the bolts but don't remove. Rock the alternator sideways and take off the belt.

5- Take out the bolts, remove the alternator, replace with the new one and reverse the procedure. Before tightening the bolts, pull the alternator sideways to tension the belt. The belt should have 1/2" of play at the longest span between two pulleys. If the belt squeals, it is not tight enough. Maybe get an extra hand from that mechanical guy down the street.

How do you remove alternator in Mitsubishi lancer evolution?

I just did this last week, and my hands are still recovering. You're gonna need to download the service repair manual, which is worth it. The short version: you'll remove pulleys and disconnect fuel rail, remove oil tube and alternator brackets, and pick the whole engine up about 4 inches to get the alternator up through the top. Good luck!

How do you remove an alternator on a 1994 GEO Prizm?

Looking into the engine compartment from the passenger side you you will see two large bolts and a smaller bolt on the alternator. The large upper bolt is the pivot bolt, the lower bolt is the locking bolt. The third bolt is used to adjust belt tension.

1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Loosen the alternator locking bolt. You may need a breaker bar to free the bolt.

3. Loosen the pivot bolt.

4. Turn the tension bolt counter clockwise to release belt tension and remove the belt.

5. Remove the electrical connector and grounding wire from the alternator. If I recall correctly this can be bit difficult. You either squeeze the connector or release a locking tab. I cannot remember exactly.

6. Remove the alternator. Be careful not to hit the radiator since you easily bend the radiator colling fins.

7. Re install by reversing the steps.

Replaced alternator still having electrical problems?

Still Having Electrical Problems AFTER Replacement of Alternator.

That situation suggests that you have one or more of many possible problems which probably existed even before you replaced the alternator. Replacing the alternator did not correct the preexisting defect.

It also suggests that there was nothing wrong with the "old" alternator and you wasted a lot of money replacing it.

The proper "fix" for this situation is that you need to have a qualified automotive electrical Technician properlytrouble your vehicle's electrical systems, identify the defect(s), and properly repair the defect(s).

NOTE my repeated use of the word PROPER. It the job is not done properly then you will continue to have expensive problems and repairs.

Can a battery with to many cold cranking amps burn up an alternator in a 2001 vw bug?

"Big" Battery Damage Alternator?

No, it should not damage the alternator. If this has happened it's probable that the problem is somewhere in the wiring circuit connected to the battery and alternator.

Alternator replacement for 1998 Toyota rav 4?

Wear safety goggles and disconnect battery terminals from battery. Remove serpentine belt, then remove all electric connectors and bolts securing alternator. Replace with new part and re-install all electric connectors and bolts securing it. Re-connect battery terminals and your done.

What voltage should your alternator produce?

Charging Voltage Range

On vehicles with a 12 Volt electrical system the alternator [or generator if so equipped] output voltage is considered acceptable if it is in the range of 13.5 volts to 16 volts.

Any voltage below 13.5 volts will not adequately recharge the battery, and anything above 16 volts will tend to cause the battery to overheat, and boil-off the water from the battery.

How do you take the pulley off an alternator?

Removal of Alternator Pulleys

Over the years I have ruined several an Alternator pulleys because I refused to spend the money to buy an Alternator Pulley Removal Tool.

I finally learned the hard way, and for a long time have used the proper removal tool; no more ruined pulleys!!!!

Due to the design of Alternator Pulleys, an ordinary "Gear Puller" cannot get a "proper grip" on the pulley flange, and the force necessary to overcome the friction of the force-fit of the pulley to the shaft results in damage to the pulley.

Go to any auto parts supply store and buy an Alternator Pulley Removal Tool. They don't cost much, and are well worth it in time saved, and the cost of replacement pulleys. Then just follow the instructins that come with the tool and you should have not trouble. Good luck!

Your 1997 truck shuts off when you take the negative cable that gos to the battery what could it be cause it keeps killing your battery you already put a new alternator?

Removal of Battery Cable While Engine Running

The engine and all the electrical systems on a vehicle need electricity to operate. In order for electricity to flow to all these devices requires a "complete" circuit.

When you remove the negative cable, or disconnect or cut any wire, current cannot flow through it, and thus everything "shuts" down.

Removing the cable, or "opening" the circuit in any manner is exactly the same as turning off a switch!!!!!

How do replace the alternator on a 2000 Acura Integra?

Hey I just recently did this to my 2000 integra ls and found out the easiest way is to jack it up using standing jacks not hydraulic one. Unbolt the alternator and belt then sit the alternator down in the bottom of engine bay. Get under the car and remove the cv axle bracket and pull it downward, it has three bolts. After that grab the alternator and face the pulley downward and angle it and start prying it down. Trust me it will go through but you have to pry it out by pulling it and moving it around as your sliding it out. Hope this helps you out.

How do you replace the alternator on an Infiniti I35?

not very easily is the answer. You will need to allow at least 3 hours unless you have some step by step instructions to get you there. Do not waste your money on Automix DIY manual as it is a complee joke and doesn't begin to go into the detail needed to do this repair. Prepare to remove the 4 bots mounting the AC at the bottom as this is the only way to get the alternator out. Remove the front passenger wheel for easier access as well. Patience and time is what is needed here. If you are a little sketchy at repair you might want to consider having a mechanic do this. The alternator is around $160 bucks and probably for that much more you should be able to have it replaced. Good luck.
