When a bolt is too long to remove due to something else "blocking" it, it is sometimes necessary to remove the "offending" item, in your specific case the bracket.
For example, I once had a '79 Ford LTD that required the removal of the radiator fan shroud, AND the radiator to get the blasted 9 1/2 inch long alternator mounting/pivot bolt out.
Try different ways of moving the alternator and bolt around to allow removal, and if that's impossible, then you'll have to remove the offending bracket and whatever else is mounted on it.

How do you remove an alternator on a 1994 GEO Prizm?
Looking into the engine compartment from the passenger side you you will see two large bolts and a smaller bolt on the alternator. The large upper bolt is the pivot bolt, the lower bolt is the locking bolt. The third bolt is used to adjust belt tension.
1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Loosen the alternator locking bolt. You may need a breaker bar to free the bolt.
3. Loosen the pivot bolt.
4. Turn the tension bolt counter clockwise to release belt tension and remove the belt.
5. Remove the electrical connector and grounding wire from the alternator. If I recall correctly this can be bit difficult. You either squeeze the connector or release a locking tab. I cannot remember exactly.
6. Remove the alternator. Be careful not to hit the radiator since you easily bend the radiator colling fins.
7. Re install by reversing the steps.

Due to the design of Alternator Pulleys, an ordinary "Gear Puller" cannot get a "proper grip" on the pulley flange, and the force necessary to overcome the friction of the force-fit of the pulley to the shaft results in damage to the pulley.
Go to any auto parts supply store and buy an Alternator Pulley Removal Tool. They don't cost much, and are well worth it in time saved, and the cost of replacement pulleys. Then just follow the instructins that come with the tool and you should have not trouble. Good luck!

When you remove the negative cable, or disconnect or cut any wire, current cannot flow through it, and thus everything "shuts" down.
Removing the cable, or "opening" the circuit in any manner is exactly the same as turning off a switch!!!!!

Hey I just recently did this to my 2000 integra ls and found out the easiest way is to jack it up using standing jacks not hydraulic one. Unbolt the alternator and belt then sit the alternator down in the bottom of engine bay. Get under the car and remove the cv axle bracket and pull it downward, it has three bolts. After that grab the alternator and face the pulley downward and angle it and start prying it down. Trust me it will go through but you have to pry it out by pulling it and moving it around as your sliding it out. Hope this helps you out.

not very easily is the answer. You will need to allow at least 3 hours unless you have some step by step instructions to get you there. Do not waste your money on Automix DIY manual as it is a complee joke and doesn't begin to go into the detail needed to do this repair. Prepare to remove the 4 bots mounting the AC at the bottom as this is the only way to get the alternator out. Remove the front passenger wheel for easier access as well. Patience and time is what is needed here. If you are a little sketchy at repair you might want to consider having a mechanic do this. The alternator is around $160 bucks and probably for that much more you should be able to have it replaced. Good luck.
