The laws vary in different states and it can depend on the reason why you want to cancel. It is important that you check the rules in your particular state. Also, its not easy. For example, some states have Lemon Laws that cover the purchase of a car with unreasonable and costly repairs. You need to act within the statutory warranty period (or the short warranty period offered by the seller) which in most cases is only thirty days. You need to document the problems and have proof that you gave the dealer the opportunity to repair them and they failed. You may need to sue in court.
For terminating a contract you need to first review the contract looking for an explanation of your right to terminate. For car sales in many jurisdictions there is no statutory right to cancel the contract. Some dealerships have a no questions asked policy for a short period of time after the sale but you must make certain you have that in writing. One local dealership offers a 48 hour full refund period if you change your mind.

It sounds entirely reasonable that you would pay them back for the remaining amount of the loan and for the needed repairs. I assume that the co-signer was trying to get the loan off of his credit and that perhaps you were not paying regularly or on time. There may be other circumstances that are not addressed here.

What does air bag multistage deployment mean?
I found this on a search I did... here is the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbag Many advanced air bag technologies are being developed to tailor air bag deployment to the severity of the crash, the size and posture of the vehicle occupant, belt usage and how close that person is to the air bag module. Many of these systems use multi-stage inflators that deploy less forcefully in stages in moderate crashes than in very severe crashes. Occupant sensing devices let the air bag diagnostic unit know if someone is occupying a seat in front of an air bag, whether the person is an adult or a child, whether a seat belt or child restraint is being used and whether the person is forward in the seat and close to the air bag module. Based on this information and crash severity information, the air bag is deployed at either a high force level, a less forceful level or not at all. Adaptive air bag systems may utilize multi-stage air bags to adjust the pressure within the air bag. The greater the pressure within the air bag, the more force the air bag will exert on the occupants as they come in contact with it. These adjustments allow the system to deploy the air bag with a moderate force for most collisions; reserving the maximum force air bag only for severest of collisions. Additional sensors to determine the location, weight or relative size of the occupants may also be used. Information regarding the occupants and the severity of the crash are used by the electronic control unit to determine whether air bags should be suppressed or deployed, and if so, at various output levels. Air bags in certain car models deploy twice, for two crashes; it first deploys and deflates, and then re-inflates upon a subsequent collision.
If they do not know who the financing is then you havnt signed a finance agreement so in that case you should be able to return the car and get your trade back. sounds like to me they are shooping your loan to different lenders. Just make sure you didnt sign a finance agreement.
What particularly interests you about the automotive industry?
Cars cant talk back. Cars work one way and that is the only way possible
Updated Information.
The most interesting thing in the motor industry is the constant upgrading, and responding to the needs of people. When the motor industry stops trying to develop and release cleaner, and more fuel efficient forms of transport, it will no longer be working for people.
hydrogen fuel cell cars, electric cars and compressed air cars are just a few new development to watch in the future.
Is the co-signer the same as the co-buyer?
No. A co-signer is a person who guarantees the loan and a co-buyer is a person who has equal ownership and liability. An example is when a young married couple wants to buy a car but does not have good or sufficient credit or enough collateral for the loan. They might get one of their parents to guarantee payment of the loan by becoming a co-signer. If the couple defaults on the loan, the co-signer becomes liable. In this same case, the couple as husband and wife, sign the loan (co-borrowers) and the purchase document for the car as co-buyers, sharing equally ownership and primary liability.

In Arizona is there a grace period after signing a contract on a new car?
According with federal law, since 1968, you can rescind any agreement in which payments are involved.
The above answer is simply not true concerning the purchase of an automobile. There is no grace period or cooling off period on the purchase of a automobile. That law only applies to unsolicited sales.
You may just need to sign a form stating that it was your car, and that you did sell it. It's up to him to get the paperwork, not you.

most 97 jettas tend to have problems with automatic transmissions.
I just traded in my '97 VW Jetta GLX towards a '04 Jetta GL. Here are all the problems I had with the '97 Jetta over the 4 years I owned it; Water pump was replaced, wiring in the doors to the windows went out (all of them), the motor to one of the back windows went out, heater core one day leaked all over my legs and had to replace, all the upper radiator hoses were disintegrating and had to replace, the fog lights worked half the time, the a/c quit, the cruise control quit, and the throttle body was going but I traded it.
Even though I had all these problems with my car I still loved it. The motor was great at 150k miles and it was fun to drive. I'll be in a VeeDub for a while...
