Car Shaking Problems

One that has been put on a machine and weights added to compensate for any imbalance/imperfection caused either by wear or by the mfg. process (on new tire)

Wheel imbalance, bad wheel bearing, bad rotor(s).

If the exclamation point is inside a yellow horseshoe, the tire pressure is low

some times the tire places dont balance the tires right. Take it back and have the tires rebalanced. You my also have a defective tire with a broken belt.

Can be many things. If the car is over 10 years old suspect a vacuum leak.

The larger rim will have a smaller sidewall; thus allowing more responsive handleing yet however, it will cause a bumpier ride.

Yes. But it depends if you ride on the rim for a long period of time, especially a bumpy rode, or if the cause is hitting a blunt object. Ball joints, CV joint's, tie-rods....ect. Basically any place where connections are made.

Custom sway bars can be bought that fit on Dodge Caravans. There is also an option to make a sway bar that will fit on the Caravan.

I believe it would be a problem with the ABS. Larger lighter 20's can be easier to lock up as they have higher pressures and smaller contact patches. What you are feeling is the ABS system trying to do its job. Oh and I am assuming the professional who put the 20's on your ride did get the right offsets and the tires are not rubbing on the wells when the truck dives forward.

i dont agree with above. i have been a tire tech for 8 years in may. 20'' wheels are much heavier than stock. we see this problem a lot. most of the time it is brakes being warped. i know you said you replaced them, but they are not all perfect when bought. when we install brakes we turn the new rotors as well as the old when we do a brake job. you would be surprised how many new rotors are not true and needed to be turned on the lathe. if that is not the case i would have front end checked by an alignment tech. they will usually do this for a small fee if not for free. bad front end parts can make good shake. trust me the offset off the wheel has nothing to do with a shake. it can cause tire rub,but not a shake. i make it a point to know these things in my line of work. i am not trying to be a butt hole, i just know my way around after market wheels and tires.

The most common problem with whacky wheels is that they are not mounted and balanced properly...go to a tire shop and get them balanced them mount them

Check the air filter, choke system , and egr valve for dirt or clogs. Any of these can cause the problem.

That depends on when it shakes.

Low speed, it could be a bad tire, bent wheel...

High speed, it could be a bad tire, bent wheel, out of balance wheel, worn ball joints, worn tie rod ends, worn idler arm...

Check the computer diagnostic codes. You can usually borrow, rent or buy a code scanner from most auto parts retailers.

I'd check the CV joints first.

You have a severely warped rotor. Have your brake pads replaced and the rotors turned or replaced. Any machine shop can tell you if the rotors can be turned or need replacing. You must replace the pads and do it on both front wheels. Over tightening the lug nuts can cause this. Tighten them to the correct torque setting. Another cause of this problem is running a car through a car wash after hard braking, before the rotors have had time to cool. Because the water strikes only one side of the rotor, that side cools and contracts, bending the metal. It doesn't happen in the rain because both sides get wet at the same time.

if you are driving and you go to stop, then that means that the front rotors are warped. if the front rotors are bad, you will feel a pulsation in pedal while applying brakes. change rotors on front.

If your car is shaking it could be poor suspension alignment can cause a car to shake and vibrate, and other possible causes are bent or worn suspension parts, old tires, bent wheels and bad brakes. If your car sounds especially rough at speed, the problem could lie with the car's spark plugs and wires. Spark plugs fire more frequently the faster you drive, and the engine will sound rough when they begin to fail.

More than likely you have a tire out of balance. It can also be a bent wheel or suspension parts are worn. Have everything inspected.

Check or replace axles, worn axles are primary source of shaking when accelerating.

I have already checked and it is not the distributor cap, spark plugs or wires. The car was running fine last night and was on 3 cylinders this morning. Any information would help. Thanks!

I have a 2005 buick la crosse and it started shaking two days ago when i start it, believe i might have put bad gas in it, however i put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner and water removal in tank. Not as bad but still shaking when i start what could be the problem anyone know? please help really concerned

Loose alignment is the most likely culprit.

It could also be the servo if your car has got one.

Sometimes, the car thinks the runway is too short and jumps so it won't crash at the end.

Also, consider checking engine mounts, transmission mounts, cradle mounts (if FWD) and CV joints and U-joints. Engine mounts and cradle mounts would be the most common causes that I've seen.

If the car is FWD, consider lightly powerbraking in Drive with the hood open and look for excessive movement suggesting a torn or weak motor mount.

If this is a Taurus or Sable, be very gentle so as not to rip the radiator or upper radiator hose. Check the mount descriped in the next paragraph for being ripped, or having a loose mounting nut. Also pay close attention to the front two cradle mounts. These very commonly rot away and cause a lurch. If it is a Taurus or Sable, replace the radiator and upper hose after repairing the lurch to prevent overheating later on. They are both already damaged.

If this is a Cadillac with a 4.5L or 4.9L engine, expect it to be the motor mount at the right front of the subframe (left front of the engine) or a CV joint of the right axle shaft.

Other less likely suspects are damaged:

strut rod or radias arm bushings, especially on Ford vehicles

ball joints

strut towers (cracked)

upper control arms (rotted or cracked) if a GM S/T truck, expect a brake pull

upper link on Mazda Millenia front suspension

strut mounts or strut bearing plates
