Car Starting Problems

You could have a starter going bad, the cables themselves might be bad or the timing may have slipped too far advanced. TRy this before you do anything else. Try jump starting it from another vehicle. If it still turns slowly the starter is probably bad but, then again it may still be a cable. At least you will know it is not a timing issue if it starts right up.

Partially clogged fuel filter or weak fuel pump. Replace the fuel filter.

This may be a sign that your battery needs to be replaced. However, there may be other causes as well.

to be completeley honest im only 14 years of age and dont know a great lot but has the motor gone?

Very doubtful, but depends on the type of short and length of time the defective unit was trying to be powered.

Would have to have specific model number and type of car followed by the electrical system to see how current was processed through such system.

*Even if the unit was powered while driving the alternator would be charging the system. If the module was powered constantly even when the car was turned off, but I would not understand why it would be made this way but is a possibility depending on the type of short circuit -- then it would be possible to drain the battery if left in this state for a few days, exact time would depend on current draw and type of battery.

The shift interlock mechanism probably needs to be repaired. The owners manual probably gives instructions for temporarily overriding this, but it would be best to have it repaired.

I don't know that much about cars but maybe there was water damage or a clogged fuel line that fixed itself. Like I said, I don't know that much about cars. It could also be the spark plugs or some other electric malfunction. Hope I helped.

Weak fuel pump, partially clogged fuel filter, weak spark plugs, defective spark plug wires, engine out of time, starter that is failing, weak battery that needs replacing, just to name the most obvious.

You can have the computer system analyzed for free at Autozone and some other car parts places. Look at the age of all of the above, and do the maintenance needed, particularly if you haven't for a couple of years.

If you mean a GM vehicle that was built during the transition from OBD1 to OBD2, the answer is if it has a OBD port a scanner will work.

Crankshaft Position Sensor....It probably has a crack in it,and is fouling with oil. Remove it and look for any type of crack. That goes for the Camshaft Position Sensor as well. Could also be a fuel pump heating up,quits,cools down,then works until it heats again...Fuel pumps can be a picky animal so, put a pressure gauge on the fuel line and let it idle until it dies,but keep an eye on the gauge to see if the pressure drops out right before it dies.

Either your starter solenoid, if not check the neutral safety or clutch safety switch.

It depends largely on what vehicle, what transmission, and what, exactly the ignition malfunction is. If the ignition switch malfunctions in such a way that the 'On' position doesn't function, there's really not much you can do besides replacing the switch and starting the engine as normal; Not a very common situation, but it can happen.

For vehicles with automatic transmissions, you're pretty much stuck with one option (besides fixing the switch); You have to physically make the connection between two of the electrical terminals on the starter solenoid by either installing your own switch, or using a screwdriver (or similar object) to jump the terminals until the engine starts (Don't forget, the ignition must be in the 'ON' position, or the engine still won't start). It should go without saying that this presents something of a safety risk, so if you don't know what you're doing, don't do it, or have someone who knows how show you.

For vehicles with manual transmissions, you have the above option, plus the vehicle can be push started. Just turn the ignition on, put the transmission in 2nd or 3rd gear with the clutch pedal pressed to the floor, get the vehicle moving (hopefully you're on a hill or you have strong friends or a tow/pushing vehicle), then 'pop' the clutch up for a second to let the vehicle motion turn the engine over, but press the clutch back to the floor quickly before the engine stalls from mismatched engine/transmission/road speeds. It may take more than one attempt to get it right, and please be careful while attempting this.

This sounds like a battery that isn't putting out it's full load of cranking amps anymore. However, when you turn the key to "start" a relay should automatically turn off all of your electrical devices. So I would start there with the starter relay.
