The can tabs are NOT more valuable than the rest of the can. But because so many people were collecting the tabs, McDonalds said, "OK, you can donate them here and we will use the money for our Ronald McDonald Houses." They just trade the tabs in for money at the local recyclers (One million tabs gets about US$355. That means 100 tabs are worth three and a half cents!). You'd be far better off keeping the tabs on the cans and recycling the whole can. You'll get much more money for it, as the aluminum in the can is just as valuable as the stuff in the tab.

Because of the prevalence of this myth, in association with several charitable organizations, many are giving the recycling value of the tabs if you turn them into drop centers. Ronald McDonald house is one and they get $0.50 per lb of tabs. It takes almost 1000 tabs to make a lb. The tabs are made of an aluminum alloy similar to the rest of the can. For recycling purposes the tab, top and can are all worth the same by weight. The Ronald McDonald House website does say that the tabs are "100% pure, high-quality aluminum," but it isn't true. They need to be an alloy to be strong enough to open the soda. Go ahead and leave the tab on the can and collect the cans to drop off as aluminum for recycling, collect the money and donate that to Ronald McDonald Houses. You'll get more money AND you will be recycling. It's a win-win! A:Yes, it's true. My daughter's elementary school collected tab tops for them.
