Does every car have a differential?
Yes, although depending of whether you have a front wheel or rear wheel drive, the differential will be set up differently. A differential is just a set of mechanical gears that equalizes the power between the left and right drive wheels, particularly when cornering, when the outside wheel travels further than the inside wheel.
It depends on whether or not your car needs a differential. Nascars do not have a differential because those cars always turn in one direction throughout the race. Gokarts (yeah, I know, they aren't cars) do not have a differential.
Stock gear ratio in an 89 wrangler?

1 A dealer can normally tell from the vin number.
2 There are normally tags or labels on the axle that have part number, gear ratio, and fluid requirement
info.
3 You can count how many times you have to turn the driveshaft to get one complete turn of the tires.
Where is the trans axle fill on a 1990 Toyota Camry?
Look on the side of the transaxle for a plug, if this is a manual transmission. If it is an automatic, the fluid is added through the tube the dipstick is in. A manual transmission takes a heavy gear oil, usually about a 90 weight viscosity, and should only be filled until the oil begins to flow out of the hole. Check the level by inserting your finger into the hole. If it is right below the level of the hole, it does not need more oil. If this vehicle has several hundred thousand miles on it, it might be wise to drain the transaxle and fill it with new oil. If it is an automatic with more than 100,000 miles, flushing the transaxle is a good idea.
What size is the washer on the filler plug of rear diff on a Honda HRV?
These fill washers are also commonly known as crush washers. Because each are designed toÊhave spring-like properties so that when the bolt is screwed in, the washer pushes out on it to create a tight fit. Hence, these washers are usually discarded after each use. The size of the washer for the fill plug of the rear differential is usually 20 mm.
Major failure. Remove the cover and the cause should be easily visible.

Estimated cost to replace rear end of 2002 explorer?
Working on my own 94 ford explorer XLT rear end now. Not sure of what your issues are.
Your question if u go to a junk yard you could pick up rear end for 150-400$ junk yards very greatly in price, not sure of the hours to install I imagine Chilton book has about 6hr (just a guess) so install your used rear end labor 2-400$. so that is best guess.
A whole rear end is rarely needed, unless your upgrading. it could be a bad bearing, seal leak, cover leak, your post didn't mention symptoms. (as in my case carrier bearing broke) bearing 9$ at advanced and have a machine shop put on (carrier) 25$ dial indicator 14$ at harbor freight and a few wrenches. If bad/damaged carrier ring have to replace carrier ring and pinion. If u have 8.8 3.27 let me know found a shop got one with 200 miles on it for under 70$ delivered. (Normally run between 170-240$.) But this is just basics.
Me I would drain your differential takes about 15-20 min w/o cleaning, if you can change your oil you can do this. Take your cover off and look if there is pieces of metal in there then you will know if something is broken(in my case a bearing). It will tell you a lot.(while you are under the rear before you start look for leaks in front of the differential where your drive shaft comes in, this is where drive-shaft attaches to your pinion, if it is leaking you need a seal. The fill plug is on this side also. ( so if it is a pinion seal, keep fluid in it until you can get it fixed.)(if it is a seal don't change fluid but check level and fill, check it regularly until you have it fixed)
A pinion and carrier change out is quite involved , however can be done at home, I am up to 200$,(includes) min install kit, tools. Then 70$ carrier and pinion. with approx another 50$ incidentals( changing axle seals and bearings, since it is all apart any way,) I( estimate total cost to be under 350$)
I know I touched base on a few things, being a blue collar worker, just want you to look at all of your options. I try to save money where I can.
Changing My first differential, have got 90% of my information free on the net, from videos to forums. Hope this helps
WARNING !!!! In my case I had gear noises, checked my 4x4 hubs, (fixed 4x4 computer) and still had noises, drained and checked my differential and found broke bearing, (which damaged carrier ring and pinion so ordered a used one) so before doing this make sure you have other mode of transportation. (has taken a week to order get parts, ring carrier (basic install kit couple special tools, one being dial indicator (a must have)(found one at harbor freight for 15$) so be warned.
This is basic information A LOT is left out. If you have a broke bearing and your ring and pinion are not damaged (search for pictures on internet),just bearing replacement is cheaper.
Looking in your differential, draining it cleaning it with brake cleaner (let evaporate before adding new fluid) will give any laymen an idea of what you need, to look for, do it your self, or at least and idea of what to call a shop for and ask for prices, could also avoid some misinformation on what service needs to be done.( since you have already see it.) Hope this helps

Why do gears have a gear ratio?
When one gear is used to drive another, the number of teeth on each gear will factor into the ratio. Even if the number is the same it will have a 1 to 1 ratio.
In a rear axle, for example, a common ratio is 41 teeth on the ring gear (driven gear) and 11 teeth on the pinion gear (drive gear). 41/11 is 3.727272 or commonly called a 3.73 to 1 ratio. It take 3.73 turns of the drive gear to get one turn of the driven gear.
If you are interested, the different ratios provide different combinations of speed and power. Thus a large gear pulling a smaller one gives speed while a smaller gear pulling a larger one gives power.

How do you shift an 5 speed split shift?
Starting in 1st with the red range button down in the low position, pull the range button up and let off the throttle youll feel it drop into high range since most of these trannys are in lighter trucks with a syncromestic transmission, clutch it drop the button into low as you slide the shifter into neuteral shift into second and let her rip. Let off and pull it into high range, clutch, neuteral, low range, 3rd, high range 3rd, 4th low, now it gets different, with out touching the range shift into 5th low, pull back into 4th high range then into 5th high. this type is great for skipping shifts. When Im not loaded Ill start in 2nd high and shift 3rd 4th 5th with out touching the range button. To downshift through the ranges push the button down and run the rpms up. on a 10 speed scale 1st low 1st 1st high 2nd 2nd low 3rd 2nd high 4th 3rd low 5th 3rd high 6th 4th low 7th 5th low 8th 4th high 9th 5th high 10th

What is the funchion of a spider gear pin in a differential?
It keeps the spider gears spread apart , to mesh to the Differential output shaft gears ( 2) , one on each side of of the spider gear set , inside the Differential Housing .
What I was trying to find was a Modification to a Traxxas Rustler / Nitro Sport Diff ,
that you took a longer pin and cut it just a small bit longer , which in turn , is suppose
to force the spider gear teeth ( further ) into the Diff output shaft , gear teeth , for better tooth contact area , hence .... less gear tooth breakage .....maybe last longer also.
What Is a "Granny Gear?" Opinions vary on what constitutes a "granny transmission," but in a nutshell it's a manual transmission with an extremely low gear ratio that allows the vehicle to crawl along at a super-slow pace akin to that of a kindly old granny shuffling along.
