There are four ways to find a ratio.

1 A dealer can normally tell from the vin number.

2 There are normally tags or labels on the axle that have part number, gear ratio, and fluid requirement

info.

3 You can count how many times you have to turn the driveshaft to get one complete turn of the tires.

4 You can divide the number of teeth on the ring gear and divide by number of teeth on the pinion.

What causes the C4 transmission on a Ford 289 Engine not to engage?

front pump, direct clutch, try a can of liquid berrymans B-12 (chemtool) Pour in the whole can, and bring the engine up to temp, and shift through all gears...then drain and refill with a new filter...if its a stickey valve body, this should unstick it... let me know what happens and good luck :) Dave tradertaippan@yahoo.com I forgot to include the fact that the car originally had an Inline 6 Cylinder and with that engine the transmission worked fine. We have since then switched to the V8 289 and are having problems with the transmission engaging. We have replaced/switched torque convertors and bell housings for the 289 to bolt up to the transmission correctly.. do you have any idea what would cause it not to engage after the engine swap?

Can you connect a transmission directly to a rear differential?

The early 60's Pontiac Tempest transmission was connected directly to the rear differential. They only did that for a year or two, guess it didn't work out well.

What you're talking about is called a transaxle. They do exist, primarily in vehicles where the engine and live axle are at the same end of the vehicle).

Where is the gear ratio stamped on the differential?

If there isn't a visible tag under one of the cover bolts, it may be stamped on the ring gear.

Why is it that when the car is in gear the tire spins nonstop?

Of course my first question is, are you moving? If not, have you snuck up on it late at night? Is the engine running? It's very common for a tire to spin when the transmission is engaged and engine running, the main purpose of a transmission is to transmit the rotational power of the engine to the tires. You neglected to say whether the tires are in ground contact or not. If they are your idle is set WAY to high, if not, wheel spin is completely normal with either a manual or automatic.

Why is gear ratio also called velocity ratio?

The gear ratio of a train, also known as its speed ratio, is the ratio of the angular velocity of the input gear to the velocity of the output gear. The gear ratio is very important when it comes to physics.

How do you troubleshoot 1992 k1500 front axle not engaging?

It's easy and usually an easy fix get someone in the truck put it in four wheel drive then hold the brakes while giving it gas (power braking) the back tires will start to spin while doing this watch the front axle if it spins you have a bad thermo actuator they are around eighty dollars at an parts store very common.

Does a 91 rear end fit in a 95 caprice?

yes. The only difference may be the gear ratio which could affect your speedometer accuracy

How serious is a bad differential?

Serious. If it is bad enough the vehicle will not move.

Will changing gear ratio change speedometer?

Yes. The speedometer reads off the transmission tail shaft, and the speedometer is geared (in a mechanical system) or programmed (in an electronic system) accordingly.

Will a transmission from an b20a1 Honda motor fit on an b20a Honda motor?

How do you change the centre differential oil and rear differential oil in a 2002 RAV4 Cruiser petrol engine automatic?

Before loosening all of the support bolts, loosen the drain/fill bolt that is more inward than the others. Make sure you have a drain-pan that can hold about 4 qts or more to reduce spillage. once you have drain pan in place, slightly break loose all of the bolts holding the rear diff cover in place. Now on the lower end of the cover remove up to three bolts completely to allow fluid to drain at a slow yet progressive rate. Once the fluids are almost all out go ahead and take out the remaining bolts. With a rubber ended hammer gently tap on the cover if it is not coming off easy. As a last resort use a flat screwdriver to wedge in between gently the cover and gasket, working yourself ( the screw driver all the way around the cover until the cover drops. Use automotive grade Degreaser and spray the inner parts/gears and cover alike. Take some shop rags (paper towels not recommended due to fibers left behind). Take a flat razor or paint scraper and scrape away all of the old gasket particles on the differential and the cover alike. now to have the ultimate clean surface use some rubbing alcohol and soak a cotton ball or a clean (non-oily) rag and wipe the mating surfaces of the cover and the rear diff. allow to air dry for about 5-10 minutes. While this is air drying it's best to RTV blue/500 degree form a gasket. Apply about 1/4" in dia. around the entire mating surface of the diff cover where the old gasket once was. It's critical to not apply right away. Let it get slightly tacky. allow about 10-15 min, if it's colder than 50 degrees F out, allow another ten minutes. Now apply the cover to he rear differential gently. By hand place the bolts through just enough to keep the bolt in without falling out. (It helps if you start at the top and do a star or x pattern. Now if you have a torque ratchet apply about 28 ft/lbs AFTER all are snugged in place. Use your sound judgment. If you don't have one That's okay, just get them all fairly tight as if you were doing spark plugs, etc.. Now hold off on adding the differential fluid just yet. Wait 10-15 minutes to allow the gasket to set. Add fluid to the point of the drain/fill hole. Tighten that up to about 18 ft/lbs. Drive around in the parking lot or neighborhood doing figure 8's. This assists in getting the fluid in the gears/ clutches. Mission complete.

You've got a 1996 Saturn SL 4 cylinder 5 Speed won't go into gear when car is running Shifts fine when engine is off you'd even settle for a picture of how this system works?

this mean that the cluch is not working properly... if you have noticed that while driving that when you push on the gas and the car "revs" a little before it actually goes any faster the cluch may need replacing... if not the cluch cable may have slipped an needs to be adjusted...
