You dont, you just top it up to the screw hole if needed.

If there isn't a drain plug, the cover will need removed to drain the fluid. You then reseal the cover and fill the fluid.

If you are trying to identify the axle ratio and/or if it has a locking rear differential and you have access to the original truck, there is a build sheet summary usually in the form of a decal. This decal would be located on the inside of the glove box lid.

rear differential is low on fluid replace the fluid in the diff. or if that dont work you may have to replace it

Your local mechanic store has manuals for sale and if those are not everything you need, then you can go to your local library, they usually have a large assortment of Chilton manuals. Now after you find that, you'll need to ask for a copy of it, they usually won't allow you to sign those books out.

I was looking at the 1999 Ford F-150 owners manual and with the 5.4 liter V8 engine ( according to the trailer towing table ) there were ( 3 ) gear ratios

( 3.08 / 3.55 / and 3.73 )

I believe if you open the driver's door you will see an information sticker on the end of the door or the latch pillar that will show the axle code . The axle code will let you determine the gear ratio ( unfortunately they don't seem to have that in the owner's manual ) so I did a Google search of Ford axle codes.

I BELIEVE :

axle code ( 18 ) is a 3.08 conventional ( non limited slip )

axle code ( 19 ) is a 3.55 conventional and H9 is a 3.55 limited slip

axle code ( B6 ) is a 3.73 limited slip

You don't

when you turn the wheel all the way to the left or right you here a popping noise when the car is rolling.

I'm assuming that the vehicle is equipped with a push button shifter for the 4 wheel drive and the light doesn't light on the switch? If so, about 90% of the time it's the switch group itself. If the light were to come on and then blink (indicating that the front dirrerential isn't engaging) the you start looking farther forward. If yours has the floor shifter, there are actually bulbs under the graphic to the left of the shifter. The shifter cover will come up and you can replace bulbs as needed from there.

sometimes there is a tag under the hood with the specifcations for your truck. along with sparkplug gap etc. there might also be a tag in the glove box with the special code for that feature. G4=3:73 gear ratio,etc. owners manual in specifications section?

Call a dealer (service or parts) & give them your vin #. They will ans. in a minute or two when they look up the vin.

Options include 3.55:1, 3.73:1, and 4.10:1

most likely 3.54 but look for the tag on the axle.
