What is a ws6 package when refering to the rear axle?

The WS6 option is a suspension package (that later included other performance components) that has been sold on the Pontiac Formula and Firebird models since 1979. Part of the packages included a limited-slip solid rear axle with disc brakes. I am not aware that Chevy ever used the "WS6" designation for such a package, but the axle assembly from a WS6 Pontiac is a direct bolt-in to any same-generation Camaro, so it has probably been called by that name. The combination of the WS6 spring rates, shock valving, large anti-sway bars, and 4-wheel disc brakes can really boost the handling of an F body. With some minor welding, the same axle can be adapted to Tri-Five Chevys with great results.

Will rear locking differential help in snow and ice?

hard question but honestly yes and no yes all for tires provide better traction but on a large sheet of ice it also means 4 tires spinning you out of control and the spinning in circle of a vechile that's has its rear wheels lock will move and twist the axle joint but it is usally rare you would need a large sheet off ice not just patches for this to even remotely happen on snow yes they or a big help but don't forget it puts a strain on the transmission the longer you drive this way so lock them only when you need it and unlock as soon as u don't also with rising gas prices you might want to know it does drain gas a little faster sorry not a easy question depends on the situation i guess

Rear differential capacity on a 2004 Chevy 1500?

The capicity is approx. 2 quarts. You drain the oil by removing the 10 bolt cover. Remember, on a rear end without a drain plug allways remove the fill plug first. If you remove the rear cover and the fill plug is "frozen" you're hosed! No way to refill. NOTE: The "punkin" has a boss on the casting where the drain plug should be. GM cheaped out and didn't put one in. You can. Simply drill and tap for whatever size pipe plug you want. Usually 3/4" NPT. This needs to be a pipe thread. A bolt thread will leak.

From Jimb2,

Very very good point, this happened to me. I had already drained the rear differential and put the cover back on. I struggled for several hours trying to remove the fill plug (drilling, chiseling, hammering, etc.), but the plug kept getting worse.

I improvised: (Idea from 13 year old nephew who heard me cursing up a storm.)

My 1996 Chevy truck comes with a breather hose on top of the rear differential housing. I disconnected the hose on top and filled it back up via a 1/8" hole, than reconnected the hose. Note: The oil bottles come with a pointed cap. Make sure to cut a very small opening at the end. It must fit into the 1/8" hole.

What is a main shaft in a manual transmission?

Most 3 speed manual transmissions without overdrive have 2 shafts, a mainshaft and a counter shaft or ( jackshaft). The main shaft is the shaft that the drive shaft is coupled to by a universal joint at the output of the transmission. When the transmission is in 3rd gear the output of the transmission is the same RPMs as the engine or the input of the transmission. So in 3rd gear or 4th gear in a 4 speed the mainshaft becomes as one from the input from the clutch to the output to the driveshaft

What is the gear ratio for a 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4x2 with the 2.4 liter engine?

Since there isn't just one ratio available for each model it's tough to say. Inside your driver's doorjam there's a tag with a bunch of information on it. It contains codes for trim, color, options etc., and toward the end of the line you'll see a 3 digit code ending in an even #, most likely 4. The preceding 2 digits are the axle code, which you can reference on this site to see which ratio you have. http://toyota.off-road.com/toyota/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=274535

You'll have to first buy new fluid the seals an a gasket... then jack the truck up take the rear tires off.. then remove the differential cover an unhook the driveshaft.. there is a pin inside the differential which is held in by a bolt.. remove that bolt an slide out the pin. then push the axles in an take out the c clips that hold them in..
