What do the African ladies carry on their heads to get water?
Not a "why" so much as a "why not?" once you've tried it. I grew up carrying water and other items on my head in Antigua, Caribbean. It is really a LOT easier to carry a bucket on your head (with a cloth wrapped in a thick circle) used to balance and protect the head. Then your hands are free to carry more or just swing more easily.
Younger girls who are just learning to balance, will sometimes reach one hand up for extra security, but in general, women who've done this for a while are remarkable balanced in stature and look quite graceful doing this.
As a Caribbean woman living in the U.S., I've often wished I could carry a heavy package on my head without getting stares, because it's easier and doesn't cause me any strain....
Hope this helps. Most people have cars and carts and don't do this here anymore..., but I will if it's in my own home or yard :-).
I'm curious to learn the names people use for this cloth wrap used. Words I've heard are Mouchwa from Haiti, and Kattah from Antigua. Would like to learn more and perhaps discover the original language these words come from.
