This is a possible cause: Halfway through the exhaust system you have a "catalytic converter". The converter has a heat shield over it. It's just a piece of thin metal that is not absolutely necessary to the operation of your vehicle. They usually rust out where they are connected to the converter. Then when you accelerate, it rattles like a piece of light metal hitting heavier metal. You can spend a lot to have the shield replaced (Waste of money)or you just crawl under the vehicle and bend the shield back and forth until it breaks off. Even most mechanics do this. The whole purpose of the shield is to try and deflect some of the heat from the converter...ie...when you drive into a pile of leaves or really tall grass, the converter won't ignite the leaves.(converters get very hot) The shields are pretty useless and I think they were designed to make us crazy once they get rusty!! AnswerThe above answer sounds right, but on my 97 explorer V8 the same rattling ocurrs when accelrating, especcialy when the engine is cold,due to a faulty exuast flange coming off the engine`s right manifold.this part can be seen by looking behind and near the top of the right front tire.To verify if this is the problem,start the truck when the engine is cold,and the hood open,and the truck in park,have someone step on the accelerator while you lisen to the engine, if the rattling sounds like its its coming from the right side of the engine , that's the problem.What is causing your 05 explorer sport trac with a 4.0l v6 to studder only at idle?

You can jump the starter directly to see if it turns, but most of the time it is the solinoid that has gone bad and you usually have to buy a new starter anyway since they come together. First you need to get some jumper cables and connect the positive from the battery to the positive connection on the back of the starter, it will be easy to find because its the one fat wire going from the solinoid on top of the starter to the actual motor. Second, turn the ignition and if the car starter spins and the car starts up then you know you need a new starter. There is two maybe three bolts that connect your starter. First detach batter cables, then the cables to the solinoid, then unbolt the starter and bolt the new one right up and re-attach all the cables begining with the starter.

9/0 controls will still lock the vehicle.
