How do you replace the valve cover gasket on a 2000 Geo Metro?

very easy. 4 bolts hold the cover down. They are around 4 inches long and have threads only at the end. (large space between top of cover and actual section it threads into).

There will likely be a few things bolted to the top of it, like a carburetor, ignition wire harness... Just unbolt them and move out of the way. Don't pull the bolts all the way out, the threads will damage the gaskets that seal the bolts.

The cover comes straight up. Be careful not to get any dirt into the exposed camshaft and rocker arms...

The gasket is u shaped and stuck onto the valve cover itself. Clean both surfaces and run a thin layer of oil or gasket sealer across the new gasket with your finger before you put the cover back on. Check the bolt gaskets as well (4 rubber washers set into the valve cover) Set it in place and hand thread the bolts into the header as much as you can before using a wrench. Careful not to cross thread, torque to about 10-15 lbs per foot. (basically hand tight and a quarter turn more. Don't over tighten or you'll break the bolt seals, or even possibly cause header damage.

How often should you change the oil in your Geo Metro?

You can never go wrong with changing the oil at 3,000 mile intervals. Especially if most of your driving is city stop and go traffic. Every car I've had over the years I've always changed it at 3,000 miles, including the filter. Promotes longer engine life in the long run.

You would like to change a geo metro transmission from manual to automatic how do you go about doing it?

My advice. Forget this idea. Sell this car and purchase one that came with an Automatic. You will save yourself money and lots of headaches. This would be an expensive conversion. The only other option would be to find a donor car with all the necessary parts.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1995 Geo Metro?

The water pump for the 1995 Geo Metro is a little above and in front of the alternator. It is also bracketed behind the timing belt. So if you do not know how to or do not have the tools to work with anything involving the timing belt, I would recommend that you take your vehicle to a professional.

Removal of water pump:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable

2. Drain the cooling system.

a. WARNING: Drain into a closable container so as not to poison your surroundings and pets.

3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

4. Loosen but do not remove the 4 water pump pulley bolts.

5. Raise and support the vehicle.

6. Remove the lower splash shield.

7. Remove the AC compressor drive belt.

8. Remove the lower alternator cover plate bolts.

9. Loosen the alternator adjusting bolt

10. Remove the drive belt.

11. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

12. Remove the water pump pulley.

13. Remove the timing belt.

14. Remove the oil level dipstick and guide tube.

15. Remove the alternator adjusting bracket from the water pump.

16. Remove the water pump rubber seals.

17. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and nuts.

18. Remove the water pump from the vehicle.

Installation: Pretty much use removal instructions but go backwards. I'll list bolt tightening in order that they should appear.

1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces

2. Check the water pump by hand for smooth operation.

a. If the pump does not operate smoothly; replace it.

b. Install the pump using a new gasket and tighten bolts to 115 inch lbs

3. Install new rubber seals.

4. Install the upper alternator adjusting bracket and tighten bolt to 17 ft lbs.

5. When you get to the alternator cover plate and the bolts tighten to 89 inch lbs.

6. When you get to the water pump pulley mounting bolts tighten to 18 ft lbs

7. When you get to alternator adjustment bolt tighten to 17 ft lbs

How do you change a speedometer cluster on a 1996 Geo Metro?

It's not too tough. a couple of multi-connector plugs need to be accessed from underneath. then there are several screws in the front and the actual speedo cable from the back. after you get everything loose it's a little tricky to get the whole assembly out and around the steering column, but it is negotiable. Good Luck
