Has Malaysia had any major wars?

Historically the answer has to be yes but the scope differs. Malaysia was involved indirectly in World War 2 when the she got invaded by the Japanese and those were tough times for Malaysians of that generation. However technically the answer has to be no. This is because Malaysia was officially independent on 1957 and formed in 1963. There was no such country as "Malaysia" in the 1940s. Recent times there have been disputes with neighbouring countries such as Indonesia and Philippines over territorial rights especially with reference to ownership of surrounding islands. A few months back there was another dispute over ownership of an island with Singapore. This was won by Singapore. Malaysia has also been involved in sending peacekeepers to Africa,Bosnia and Iraq. Overall Malaysia is a peaceful country. The nearest equivalent to be involved in a armed conflict was the counter-insurgency of Communists from 1948~1986, and the brief "Confrontation" with Indonesia in the mid 1960s, right after the formation of Malaysia.

What led to the eventual division of Germany into two countries?

At the end of WW2 the Russians, Americans, French and English had arrived in Berlin. The Russians got into the area first followed by the Western nations, so they claimed land. To settle the problem the Western powers and the Russians agreed that Berlin would be divided into four sections for each nation. The Western nations combined to make West Berlin and West Germany while the Russians took the area that became known as East Berlin and East Germany. This was the start of the cold war. Soon the Russians built the Berlin Wall and stopped all traffic and connection to the Western sections and "checkpoint Charlie" was formed with Western powers on one side and the Russians on the other. The people of East Germany could not freely cross the border or visit family until 1989 when the wall came down.

How did Russia get and remain so big?

Actually, Russia today is smaller than anytime in its history in the past 300 years. Russian Empire rapidly expanded in all directions for the past 4 centuries. In the 17th century it started colonization of Siberia. In 18th century it expanded to the North following the victory in the Seven Year War with Sweden, to the South following the defeat of Turkey and to North America with its distant colony in Alaska. In 1860s Russia sold Alaska but acquired new lands in the Far East from China (now known as the Russian Far East). Russia also colonized colonized Manchuria (Northern China) and Central Asia reaching as far as Afghanistan. This process of rapid expansion was reverted in early 20th century. Russia gave up Sakhalin Islands, Finland and Poland. In 1991, Russia lost 1/4 of its territories as a result of the dissolution of the USSR, including its some of its historical lands such as Ukraine and Belarus. When looking at the map of Russia below, consider this - once century ago Russia was 30% larger than it is now.

The square on this map of Russia shows the western Russia where Russian language, culture, tradition and empire have originated. The Western Russia stretches to the Ural mountains in the East which divide Eurasia to Europe and Asia. The blue narrow body of water on this map of Russia indicates the word's largest body of fresh water - Lake Baikal. The city of Novosibirsk that you can see in the middle of this map of Russia is considered a capital of Siberia.

What experiments the Nazis do on homosexuals?

There is little evidence to educate us of the true extent of the experiments which homosexuals were subject to in concentration camps in WW2. This is due, in part, to the legal sanctions on homosexuality both during the war years and up until 1994 in Germany. In essence, it remained illegal until 1969, with further limitations on this up until 1994. Therefore, while the rest of the people in the concentration camps were liberated by the allied forces, many homosexuals were rearrested and sent back into custody to carry out the rest of their sentence based on evidence found during the war years.

Moreover, the German government did not formally apologise for the treatment of homosexuals during the third Reich period until 2002. With these contributing factors, many gay people were too scared to speak out about about their treatment in the concentration camps for fear of implicating themselves further.

However, the few people who have bravely spoken about their terrible and inhumane treatment, makes for a chilling read. Homosexuals were the lowest of the low within the concentration camps and as such were not only persecuted by their Nazi captors, but also their fellow inmates within the camp. The medical experiments that were reported were mainly based around trying to change their sexuality - from homosexuality to heterosexuality These experiments or 'treatments' included compulsory visits to the brothel which was 'staffed' by females from other camps. This was apparently one of Himmler's ideas; his rational behind this being: that once they knew what they are missing by not sleeping with a woman, they will turn heterosexual Also, homosexuals who agreed to castration, and whose conduct was good, would be released from the camp. Indeed, many agreed to this as their ticket out if the appalling conditions in the camp. The reality, however, was that these men were sent to SS Dirlewanger penal division on the Russian front, and many of whom were butchered in the partisan war.

As discussed above, the true extent of the suffering and persecution of homosexuals during the Nazi years many never really be known. However, it is a pertinent aspect of WW2 that must never be forgotten.

How did people let the Holocaust happen?

People want to fit in, this is a fact of human nature. If everyone in your culture/country is doing something, no matter how horrible it is, most people will go along with it, especially if the government sanctions it. That being said most Germans didn't know that it was happening (or convinced themselves they didn't), and a lot of the ones that did had been brainwashed into thinking that the Jews were a secret, evil and organized group bent on control of the world and destruction of the German people. That is, of course, absurd but as I stated most people believe what they are told to believe. If you are saying to yourself, "no one is that stupid" you should realize that RIGHT NOW many powerful governments (YOUR government, if you live in an industrialized country) mandate the wholesale killings of any group of people that gets in their way... as you, with the rest of the citizenry, looks on with only mild interest. It seems normal to you because no one around you acts like its strange. However, in 50 years, people will wonder how YOU allowed these things to happen.

What does World War 2 have to do with the Jews?

Those Jews that are familiar with history and what happened in WW2 are more likely to recognize the early signs of persecution, hatred, oppression of Jews when it appears. They are more likely to recognize the importance of resisting those nations or people that engage in anti-Jewish activities. The new reestablished state of Israel came about in 1948 because of the emigration of Jews out of Europe. Jews no longer believed that their non-Jewish European countymen would act to protect the rights and lives of Jews when confronted by evil, as had become clear in continental Europe during the Second World War. Jews began to believe that they must unite together to protect themselves.

How did the US government respond to Nazi persecution of the Jews?

The US really didn't do anything to stop the Holocaust in Europe because, it wasn't until 1944 when they had the full scale of what was happening in Europe. The Allies decide to continue the push for Berlin to stop the Holocaust that way. The main reason for this was because, they thought that if they bombed the Concentration Camps, the prisoners would be killed from the explosions. Despite this, they did bomb few parts of the Concentration Camps and train tracks but this was only due to they bombed German Factories.

The Italians invaded Abyssinia (present day Ethiopia) in Oct 1935.

What did Hitler think of communism and socialism?

Hitler did not like either. Actually, Communists were one of the first people to become victims of German concentration camps. With socialism, well, that wasn't one of Hitler's traits. He is an example of what happens if someone is never in physical contact with another person. (at least, no contact for a long time.)

- Actually, Hitler was well aware of the German Social Democratic party (which was, and still is, the primary German socialist political party; they are usually called SPD, which is short for the German for "Social Democratic Party of Germany")- as a German politician, he had to deal with them, at least until the Nazis were able to come to power and eliminate them. The SPD was another of the first parties to be banned using the powers granted by the Enabling Act of the 1933. Its members were imprisoned or forced into exile.

How did Hitler treat the blacks in Germany?

Jews and Negroes were regarded as impure and unclean races by the Nazi's. Initially they were persecuted under Hitler's regime, throughout the mid / late '30s and in the first couple of years of the war- they were forbidden to hold jobs or to work, had to carry special ID cards, were publicly humiliated, harrassed and beaten up by the Gestapo, had their property confiscated, and all Synagogues were closed or burnt down. Literature, music and works of art by Jews or blacks were destroyed, and many were convicted of spurious offences and imprisoned or sent to work in forced labour camps. From 1942 onwards, the Nazi's began a programme of mass extermination of all people they regarded as inferior, sending them to be killed in the many extermination camps around Germany, Poland and other occupied nations. They were rounded up and put on trains that took them to the death camps, where they were gassed, shot, poisoned, or simply starved or worked to death.

How come Hitler disliked Jews?

You ask for just one reason ... Here you have more.

  • Hitler found that when he made speeches in the beer-halls of Bavaria in 1920-23 raving and ranting against the Jews sent his audiences into a right regular frenzy of hysterical applause- and he decided that Jew-baiting was a real political winner.
  • He believed that Jews were Communists and homosexuals.
  • He believed that Jews had caused Germany's defeat in World War 1.
