Why did Great Britain try to appease Germany after they invaded Poland?

Great Britain did not try to appease Germany after the Germans invaded Poland. In fact, Britain and France both declared war on Nazi Germany almost immediately after the invasion of Poland.

Lord Chamberlain's appeasement efforts took place after the German anschluss of Austria (forcing Austria to become part of Germany) and especially after the Nazis announced plans to take part of the Czech republic called Sudetenland. Britain allowed the Nazis to take over this strip of land (which was occupied by many German speaking people) and the Nazis then also grabbed control of the rest of the Czech and Slovak countries without a word from Britain.

How could the enigma have helped the British back then?

The Enigma was pretty much a complex machine that the British got a hold of. They got it when Germany invaded Poland and someone stole it from one of the deserted U boats and brought it back to Britain. This helped because when Hitler sent commands out to the U boats, Britain will also pick up the command so Britain would be one step ahead of the war plan. The only problem was when Britain found out one of their undefended cities were going to get bombed, they couldn't do anything because they did not want to let the Germans know that they had the Enigma. Otherwise, Britain would use it to find out Germany's plans and use it to attack one the areas that they are not covering.

How much control does Russia's government have over it's economy?

In brief, it has total control. All business is controlled by the government. The government decides what to make, when to make it, how much to make, who sells it, and how much it sells for. In addition, its the government that gives the people what it feels they need, rather than what the people actually want.

How was war on the western and eastern fronts the same?

The main difference between Eastern and Western front in WW1 was that on the Eastern front the German and the Austrians defeated the Allied forces, in particular defeated Russia, one of the major allied nations, and imposed an humiliating armistice to the Russians with the treaty of Brest-Litovsk (march 3, 1918); peace negotiations began in December 1917, a few months after the Revolution of October, who lead Communists to power in Russia and the deposition of the Tzar Nicolai II.

There were a lot of troubles during the negotiations because the new Russian leaders didn't accept the term of surrender, which they considered too heavy, and this caused a momentaneous restart of the hostilities between Russia and the Central Empires; the treath of an occupation by the Germans of the Bolshevik Russia convinced the Russian revolutionary leaders to come back to the negotiations and to accept terms even worse than before the restart of war.

The treaty, signed between Bolshevik Russia on the one side and the German Empire, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and Ottoman Empire (collectively the Central Powers) on the other, marked Russia's final withdrawal from World War I as an enemy of her co-signatories, fulfilling, on unexpectedly humiliating terms, a major goal of the Bolshevik revolution of November 7, 1917.

In all, the treaty took away a third of Russia's population, half of her industry and nine-tenths of her coal mines.

However, Germany's defeat in World War I, marked by the armistice with the Allies on November 11 at Compiègne, made it possible for Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Poland (which were assigned to Germany by the treaty of Brest-Litovsk) to become truly independent sovereign states, and the designated monarchs had to renounce their thrones.

On the Western front, instead, after the German Spring offensive, who was very near to succed in defeating the Allied armies and to give to Germany the final victory, there were two major allied offensives in summer which caused the collapse of the German western front and a general withdraw or surrender of the German troops.

The immediate consequence was the collapse of the German government and of the monarchy; the new government quickly signed an armistice which stopped all fighting on the Western Front on Armistice Day (11 November 1918). The German Imperial Monarchy collapsed as Ludendorff's successor General Groener agreed, for fear of a revolution like that in Russia the previous year, to support the moderate Social Democratic Government under Ebert rather than sustain the Hohenzollern Monarchy.

The war along the western front led the German government and its allies to sue for peace in spite of German success elsewhere. As a result the terms of the peace were dictated by France, Britain, Italy (which soon abandoned the negotiations in disagree with the other allies about the terms of assignation of the former German Empire's African and Far East colonies) and the United States, during the 1919 Paris Peace Conference. The result was the Treaty of Versailles, signed in June 1919 by a delegation of the new German government.

The terms of the treaty were the end for Germany as an economic and military power.

There was also an other difference between the war on Eastern and Western front: on the West, the Germans and the Allies, in an effort to break the deadlock, introduced new military technology, including poison gas, aircraft, and tanks.

On the contrary, on the Eastern front was fought a more traditional war of infantries, with large massive land attacks and the use of conventional artillery.

Why did German army officers attempt to kill Hitler?

Its probably a combination of the war seeming lost for Germany, and Hitler's blind racism which was not the his most welcome virtue by the Military.

Actually Hitler was on very heavy medication, that just made his crack pot Doctor indispensable, instead of having a health effect. This medication along with Hitler's mentality made him increasingly drift away from reality.

At some point it was obvious to many in the German Military, that Hitler's decisions and orders are far apart from reality, and are leading Germany to a complete defeat. Also his close associates were busy making themselves unpopular to the rest of the military for various reasons. Anyone who felt German knew that Hitler's reign could not bring anything positive on the table.

Thus few attempts were made to kill Hitler, and thus stop the complete destruction of Germany, as well as secure a more mild treatment from the Allies by showing Germans were against Hitler. A successful Hitler assassination would signal to the world that not all Germans were Nazi's.

What was Goering's error in Battle of Britain?

The battle officially began on 13 August. Fighter losses were about even, but the Luftwaffe suffered from poor operational focus and shifting priorities. Unwilling to endure such heavy losses, Göring and adolf-hitlerswitched in early September to a campaign of city bombing, allowing Fighter Command to recover. On 17 September, Hitler cancelled SEALION, although air raids continued.

Tactically, the great error of Goering's was not attacking the coastal radar stations of Britain, which allowed the RAF to efficiently vector fighters to incoming German raids. This allowed the smaller RAF to concentrate its forces on specific German groups, achieving numerical superiority and thus inflict more damage on the Germans than would have been otherwise possible.

Similarly, Goering failed to make attacking the RAF's fighter airfields a priority. If even a substantial minority of them had been rendered inoperative, it would have effectively crippled the British attempts to defend themselves. The Germans would then have achieved a significant numerical superiority over Britain, enabling them to bomb with relatively few losses.

Which british ships engaged in battle with battleship Bismarck?

No "battleship" was sunk by Bismarck. The "battlecruiser" HMS Hood was sunk by Bismarck on May 24, 1941. Battlecruisers do not have the armor that battleships are built with, being designed for speed and firepower.

Hood, however, was larger than any of the British battleships of World War II, and was one of the most heavily armed British capital ships.
