Gauchos are the cowboys of the Pampas, mostly in Argentina. At first they rounded up the herds of horses and cattle that roamed freely on the vast grasslands east of the Andes. In the early 19th century they fought in the armies that defeated the Spanish colonial regime and then for the caudillos who jockeyed for power after independence. Argentine writers have celebrated the gauchos, and gaucho literature is an important part of the Latin American cultural tradition.

A minority group is a subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their own lives than the members of a dominant or majority group have over theirs. The number of people in a group does not necessarily determine its status as a social minority. Sociologist define a minority group with the concern of the economic and political power, or powerlessness, of that group. An example of a minority group in America are homosexuals, or Muslims. Neither group is properly represented politically, or economically, and both groups have issues with certain rights such as the right to marry in some states for homosexuals. "Ethnic" which derives from the Greek word "ethnos" pertains to culture. An ethnic group is a cultural group. They are distinguished by language, customs, cuisine, modes of dress and so on. In most countries there is one dominant majority culture, and members of that group are an ethnic group to be sure. However, it is also common to find countries where there are minority ethnic groups, to whom the majority ethnic group often shows great hostility. Also in places like America, ethnic groups can be composed of several different minority groups. In our "melting pot" we have Black Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, and so on that all compose of one big ethnic group.

Native civilizations in America were profoundly affected by the development of European Colonialism from the 16th century onward. Some were wiped out altogether, as in the case of the Incas and Aztecs. Some were much reduced by the colonizers' aggression and natural diseases. Some experienced a small measure of prosperity or rise in affluence by allying with the Europeans, if also still suffering in other ways. All were profoundly changed in respect to basic social structures, values-system, and beliefs.

One of the similarities of Bolivar and Lenin was they were both wanting to be communists. They also both were Bolsheviks.

The gold fields were in northern CA about 100 miles inland from San Fransisco above Sacramento. Sonora was one of the main mining towns ( it is still there and very alive) and 6 miles from Sonora is Columbia. Columbia today is a state park and a preserved mining town showing what life was life in the 1850's in CA. The whole area is scattered with gold rush towns. Not too far from Columbia is Murphy's which, for a time, was the home to Mark Twain and down the road is Angles Camp. It is Angles Camp that Twain used in his story about the jumping frog. Today they have a jumping frog contest. The entire area is very interesting and fun to visit.

However, it should be noted, that both communism and fascism are a total government control. There is little real difference between them.

Simon Bolivar is widely held to be responsible for much of the democracy that exists in Latin America. He successfully led Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and Panama in revolution against Spanish rule, and established them as independent countries

Many modern surviving Mayans reside in an area known as the Mayan Highlands of Guatemala.
A vast chunk of this area is a farming community and weaving industry. They now speak Spanish instead of their native languages and have taken up modern technology, including computers and mobile/cell phones. They still practice Mayan traditions and beliefs (minus the sacrificing, luckily).
They have modern roads through their lands and use them to trade with surrounding towns and cities using vehicle transport.


There are also some tribes of indigenous native Mayans who still inhabit the lowland rainforest regions. Most of these have not yet been contacted by modern man and are protected by local governments by restricting travellers and air traffic over the areas they are known to inhabit.

The indigenous native Mayans who have come into contact with modern man mainly still act suspicious, but are happy to trade. For example, after one particular environmental disaster, a charity group left food on the border of a known native Mayan tribe, which the tribe accepted.

The line of demarcation determined by the Treaty of Tordesillas 1494 and amended by the Treaty of Zaragoza 1529 established which parts of the New World would be under Spanish and which under Portuguese rule. Clearly the geographical demarcation also established where the relevant languages would principally be spoken.

Colombia has had many heros in it's history. But one of it's most famous heros has been "Simon Bolivar". He was Colombia's liberator from the spanish and he was also the formal president of Colombia.
