How do you change the rotors on a 2002 Hyundai Elantra?

Removing the front rotors was no problem on my 2005 Hyundai Elantra. The Elantra has two recessed Phillips screws holding each rotor to the hub. The screws won't come loose with just a screw driver; and you might strip the slot. Spray the screws with PB penetrating fluid (available at most auto parts stores) and let soak as directed. Then use a hand screwdriver impact tool (available at most hardware or tool stores) and a hammer to break the screws loose without stripping the Phillips slot. The screwdriver impact tool has a Phillips screw driver bit on the end of a hand held metal shaft. The screwdriver impact tool isn't just a screw driver; it's a specialized tool that directs the impact from a hammer into a simultaneous rotation of the screw driver bit. With the bit in the screw slot and the tool set to counterclockwise rotation, smack the end of the impact tool a time or two with a hammer. The impact from the hammer will break the screw loose without stripping the slot. Then remove both screws with a regular Phillips screw driver. After removing the screws, I used a rubber mallet to work the rotors off. When reinstalling new or re-surfaced rotors, reinstall the Phillips screws hand tight with a screw driver.

I've owned many cars and have always changed my own brakes. I've never had to use a puller, grinder, sledge hammer or cutting wheel. Even the most stubborn, rusted rotors have come off easily after spraying liberally with penetrating fluid and having the patience to let them soak a while.

VERY unfortunately, you have to remove the rotor with the steering knuckle and then have the rotor pressed off! I don't know, but you may be able to use a large gear puller to remove them. Of course, the cotter pin and nut must be removed first.

Mine were'NT too bad so I opted to use a 4.5" hand grinder to clean them up a bit. I first used a hammer to knock off the rust buildup (unbelievable for a two year old car), then a wheel to remove the glazing, then a wire brush (on the grinder) to finish up the job.

Long job overall, but saved me the over $300 that Hyundai wanted to do it.

Good luck! I tried removing the rotor with a puller, however, when I did it, the one side of the rotor actually snapped off. It took about 4 hours of a sledgehammer, heat, and a can of penetrating oil to finally free the rotor. When all is said and done, the rotor came off in about 6 pieces. Most of the pieces were around where the lug nuts come through, the actual disk didn't break (would have saved time and energy if it did). In my book, it would have been well worth $300 to let someone else deal with it.

Do not, I repeat, do not waste your time! After working on this an entire weekend, the hubs would not move. Brought them to a machine shop, and with 20 tons of pressure, they wouldn't budge. No amount of heating, hammering, or pulling helped! The hubs would not move from the rotors. I ended up having to get new hubs and bearings. Go to any Hyundai dealer and tell them you are having trouble removing a rotor and they will ask if you are driving an Elantra.

ANSWER::

Im new and want to add something here. All the Elantra's rotors are hard to get off. No matter how hard you hit them with a sledge hammer they will never come off UNLESS you take a grinder and a cutting wheel and cut either side of the rotor being careful not to hit the lug bolts or the hub inside. Cut all the way through the part that the brakes hit and then cut as much through the base as you can. I didnt have a cutting wheel so i used a grinding wheel, but I'll bet a cutting wheel works better. After that, hit it with a sledge hammer, it will come off in pieces. Don't worry about having to turn them, they are cheaper to buy new ones than to have them turned. Also, some have 2 screws on the front. Make sure you take the 2 screws out before doing all this. These are to help align the rotor on the hub.

ANSWER:

Just did this job on 2004 Hyundai Elantra. I did not have to go through the steps mentioned above. After removing the two screws described above, I used at three prong puller and lots of WD-40, a small sledge hammer. First I carefully hit the rotor

all around the edges and near the lugs. You should use some emery cloth or sandpaper to clean up the outer edge of the hub. These were HARD to get off and it took a lot of patience to get a millimeter with the puller, back it off, tap the rotor back on, spray it with WD-40 and repeat about 50 times. Eventually I worked it off the hub. The biggest problem that I noticed was the tendency for the rotor to not come off "even" pulling to one side or the other which then jams it on the hub. You have to work slow and make sure you are pulling straight and even off the hub. Eventually I got them. Good Luck!

How do you remove the window crank on a 1995 Hyundai Accent?

HI !

ASK THE HYUNDAI DEALER TO BORROW THEIR CRANK REMOVAL TOOL. WHAT IS HOLDING YOUR WINDOW CRANK ON IS A WIRE CLIP THAT IS SHAPED SIMILAR TO A HORSESHOE ON THE BACKSIDE OF YOUR PLASTIC WINDOW CRANK. THIS TOOL PUSHES THE OPEN ENDS APART SO THAT IT CAN SLIDE AWAY FROM THE CRANKSHAFT. YOU CAN PROBABLY GET IT WITH A NEEDLENOSE AND A SCREWDRIVER, BUT YOU RISK SCRATCHING THE DOOR PANEL OR THE CRANK ITSELF, I KNOW CAUSE THAT'S HOW I GOT MINE OFF. ONCE YOU SEE THE STUPID CLIP OFF, YOU'LL SEE HOW SIMPLE A CLIP IT IS AND WHY IT CAN BE SUCH A PAIN IN THE BUTT TO GET OFF. ONCE THE HANDLE IS OFF, THE CLIP IS SIMPLY REPLACED ONTO THE BACKSIDE OF THE CRANK AND YOU'LL SEE HOW A SMALL SECTION OF THE CLIP STICKS INTO THE TOOTHED SHAFT THAT YOUR CRANK SITS ON AND HOLDS IT IN PLACE. GOOD LUCK !

Funny to see this question. I just took my door apart Saturday. One thing about the clip is that it might be on backwards; mine was. The clip lines up with the crank handle and the open section facing away from the crank handle. Mine was put on with the open clip facing the handle. Because of this using the crank tool was useless but its easy enough to use a long thin screwdriver and just push one side of the clip off.

There are also two screws in the padded armrest that need to come out and one more exposed screw, not just the two mentioned in the prior post. Once all five screws are out use a "door fork"(crank tool) to pop the plastic retaining pins around the door and unscrew the topside lock button

Once all the pins are freed slide the panel forward a bit(it has notches just in front of the opening handle) and lift it up. Once its free pull it towards you enough to see the back side of the handle. Push the little white clip off the metal rod and rotate it about 90 degrees. The door rod will now free up from the handle lever and the panel is off :)

How to install window regulator on a Hyundai accent?

The tools you will need:

A #2 Phillips head screwdriver, A Standard head screwdriver, A 10mm Socket and ratchet.

First take out all of the screws in the door panel. There is one in the handle that opens the door, and 2 in the door panel handle. Use the flat screwdriver to pop off the covers. Taking out the door handle is a little tricky. Slide it towards the front of the car and pull out. You might not get it the first try. Once you get the handle out enough, you will be able to see 2 metal rods connecting to it(towards the back of the car). Using the standard screwdriver, pull the plastic piece(either blue or red) towards you and it should unclip from the rod. Next, pick up on the rods and they should come out of the handle. Once all screws and the door handle are removed, you can take off the panel.

To remove the door panel, simply pull it off, starting at the bottom of the door and prying your fingers between the panel and the door. You will hear a series of pops. You didn't break anything. If it doesn't come fairly easy, don't pull too hard. You may have missed a screw. Once the panel swings freely on the window slot, get it close to the door and pick up, as the top rests in the window slot. If you have power windows, you will have to unclip the wires going to the switch.

Once the panel is off, drop the window and remove the 2 Phillips screws holding the window on the track. After the window is off, tape it up so it is out of your way. Next, take the socket and remove the 3 nuts holding the window motor, (towards the front of the car, in the middle), and then the three(maybe four) that hold the metal track in place. Once those are off, good luck getting out the hole in the bottom of the door. It will not free fall in the door as the stud screws are attached to the motor and regulator. You will also have to disconnect the motor wire. Once it is out of the door, there are 3 screws or bolts that hold the motor to the regulator. take those out and the motor should slide off easily. Then do it in reverse to put it back together.

Where is the rear defroster relay switch in a 2001 Hyundai accent?

It is behind dash. Directly in front of your left knee. There are 4 screws on panel. Once removed you can pop panel off. There is a metal plate behind that which can be removed. But relay can be accessed without removal of plate. Relay should be black. It's fastened with I think a 3/8" hex head screw.

What size wiper blades does a 2001 Hyundai Accent take?

The 2001 Hyundia Accent takes a 22" drivers side, 16" passenger side and a fairly specialized 14" rear wiper that is difficult to find in the stores. See sources and related links below for more information. Since there are currently over 22 different wiper arm attachments, do not buy wipers just by length only - be sure to lookup exact wiper blade part numbers by vehicle make, model and year for the brand wiper you decide to purchase. This ensures correct length AND correct attachment.

Where can you find an online diagram for installing a manual transaxle on a 2000 Hyundai Accent?

I've had pretty good luck finding online diagrams and instructions at the Autozone Repair Info site. If that doesn't work out, you can locate the instructions in a Chiltons or Haynes manual, which I don't think exists on line, but you can usually find them at your local library, and then make copies of the applicable pages.

How do you replace a 2008 Hyundai headlight?

Type your answer here... Look in your owner's manual. It will explain, with diagrams, exactly how to change all bulbs.

Usually, there is a round black "cap" behind the headlight. Unscrew this counter-clockwise, undo the metal spring clip holding the bulb in. Pull off the connecting wire (they can be stubborn!). Connect the wire to the replacement bulb without touching the glass with bare hands (if necessary wear latex gloves). Insert the replacement bulb, fit the spring clip and replace the cap - job done.
