Why does the rear end go down on a 1997 Lincoln Town Car when the car is turned off?

It is probably because of the rear air suspension...

Lincolns have an "air" suspension which helps to give it a plush riding feel. There are bags near the wheels of each rear tire that are filled with air upon vehicle start up (or very shortly thereafter). These bags are filled with air has the vehicle is on, inflating if there is a drop in pressure. When the vehicle turns off, these bags are deflated thus lowering the rear end of the car.

How do you change the oil in a car?

Oil changes are all essentially the same. Follow the numbers below, starting with a cool engine of course:

You will need:

  • Rags
  • Wrench for the drain plug.
  • Oil Filter wrench or strap wrench (I've used a long strip of sandpaper before and this works well).
  • Oil drip pan large enough to hold the capacity of your vehicle.
  • A blue, two gallon fuel can - for the used oil.
  • Replacement fuel filter.
  • New oil - see your owner's manual for the proper viscosity, and perhaps brand.

Follow the numbers:

  1. Jack the front of the vehicle and place on jack stands, or drive the vehicle up onto ramps and chock the rear wheels.
  2. With the appropriate sized wrench, loosen--Do Not Remove--the drain plug. Have rags and the oil drip pan ready.
  3. Place the oil drip pan beneath the drain plug. Be aware that the volume of oil in the oil pan will push the draining oil out away from the drain hole.
  4. Let the oil drain into the pan, and locate the oil filter. You may be able to reach some easier from beneath the vehicle, while others are easier to reach from above. None are really located in convenient places in any vehicle built since the 1970's, so you may want to check the location before jacking the vehicle.
  5. Once the oil pan has drained, replace the plug and tighten. Do Not Over Tighten, and make certain you do not cross-thread the plug.
  6. Reposition the oil drip pan below the filter, and loosen the old filter.
  7. Pull the old filter away from the filter mount and tip the threads up. Remove the oil filter, but remember it holds oil and if you tip it down, you make a mess. You can reduce this if you can manage to place a rag over the open end.
  8. Lube the gasket and threads on the new filter with a small amount of oil from a new bottle of oil.
  9. Position the new filter on the mount, careful not to cross-thread it, and hand tighten it 3/4 turn after it makes contact with the mounting surface. Do not over tighten it.
  10. Add the oil your vehicle calls for less 1/2 quart.
  11. Check for dripping oil under the vehicle. A sheet of cardboard can help at this point.
  12. If no drips are present, start the engine and check quickly for leaks.
  13. Shut the engine off. Let the vehicle sit for a 30 minutes. Check the oil level on the dip stick.
  14. Add the remaining oil if necessary.
  15. Remember the blue fuel can? Transfer the used oil from the drip pan to the blue fuel can and seal it. You should be able to find a used oil depot at a gas station, auto repair shop, oil change shop, some waste management locations, or a recycling station. Be certain to dispose of it properly, less than half a cup spilled can taint groundwater, and the EPA and most states' DEQ frown on improper dumping, usually with a heavy fine.

Watch your vehicle for the next day or so for leaks and you should be all set.

Why is the passenger side door not closing?

If by not closing you mean that the "door ajar" signal keeps alerting and keepind the dome light lit sometimes the door clasp mechanism gets a little dirty causing a bad connection normally a little pblaster or even some brake cleaner sprayed in there (but not too much dont want to ruin the paint) works good to get the dirt out hope i saved you some money

10 diagnostic monitor internal thermal fuse - open due to intermittent short to ground 1991 town car?

This is an airbag fault code. The airbag system in this car has a fuse in the main module that will open after airbag deployment or in the event of a short (as in your case) or malfunction in the airbags or wiring to the airbags. You must find the cause of the short and correct it, then change the airbag module, as the fuse is not a replacable item. A common short point in this car is the airbag clock spring under the steering wheel. This part has a contact that moves when the steering wheel is turned. The contact provides an electrical connection to the drivers airbag. The clockspring will sometimes wear out and cause a direct short. This will take out the thermal fuse and disable the airbag system. You need to have some electrical troubleshooting experience and have a multimeter and a service manual to troubleshoot and repair this. If the clockspring needs to be replaced you have to pull the steering wheel and dissasemble the steeing coulm. If you are mechanically inclined then go for it, if not leave this job to someone else! Hope this helps JSS

My check air suspension on my 1995 Lincoln town car comes on after the pump comes on for a few seconds yet the suspension is still low. What do I look for to fix it?

You have to replace the Rear suspension Airbags.

start up the car and let the pump run, then when the signal comes on "check air suspension" turn the car off and listen at the rear wheels for sound of air escaping. if you u hear any air escaping u need to replace the bags. also the height sensor can cause this problem if its not working correctly. its a small plastic plunger located in the middle of the rear axel

The air bags on this can be expensive. You can save a lot of money buy converting the air to a non air suspension. Strutmasters.com offers conversion kits for many vehicles including Town Cars. I replaced the ride on my moms Town Car about 2 years ago. She loved it. I say away with the air and give them a call.
