Take apart the handle. The spring piece is plastic and sadly, probably cracked and not pushing the medal rod properly.....just figured out that was the problem with my stuck handle. Trying to now find a handle to just replace the broken one.

Don't change the lights, they are probably ok. It took me ages to find the cause on my 98 XJ8. The trunk lid latch has a microswitch hidden in it. This is operated by a plunger which pops out of the mechanism when the trunk lid is released. The lights stay on until you close the lid and the plunger retracts, shutting off the lights.

I got access by removing the plugs retaining the lid interior trim and removing the screws and cable retainers, the latch can then be winkled out without removing the rod from the right hand key unit. My microswitch was ok, I just had to bend its bracket slightly so that the plunger operated it properly! Works OK now. Good Luck!
