What does it mean when smoke is coming out from under the hood of your car?
Some sources of smoke...
* White smoke - likely to be some sort of coolant leak. These can small and sneaky - a 'micro-hole' (I just made that term up) in a hose might not leak until under full pressure, and even then be mighty hard to spot. * Radiator leaks * Leaky water pump * Leaky thermostat housing - took a long time to spot the micro fissure in the Focus housing - common problem
* Just filled the oil and some spilled and worked its way to the front exhaust manifold * Just changed the oil filter - would not be surprised if oil spilled onto an exhaust pipe and ultimately turned to smoke * Lost a heat shield over an exhaust pipe and the 180,000 mile engine leaked oil - ever so little - onto the now exposed pipe. This one took me a long time to spot on my 1987 Taurus * Leaky valve cover gaskets - oil working its way toward hot surfaces * Leaky timing oover gasket - that one goes back to my 1969 Mustang Mach I (the 'good old days' ;)
Other thoughts on diagnosing...
* Careful inspection - use a flashlight / trouble-light / inspection mirrors
* Be careful of pressurized cooling systems! Don't ever think to remove a radiator cap from a warm, let alone HOT engine
* Trace leaks backwards to the source - gravity makes these fluid move away from the source - don't jump to conclusions *
*

probably your pcv valve or front O2 sensor (if your lucky). Could be the Mass Airflow Sensor. It basically means the fuel is not properly running through the motor. May also notice RPM issues with that problem.

How do you compress the rear calipers on a 2001 Mazda Protege?
On the back of the brake assembly there is a screw which doesnt hold anything. you remove it and you will see a hole and a washer on the screw (dont loose it :-) i almost did ).
then you need metric HEX wrench. inside there is a screw which you have to unscrew approx 5 turns (this screw controlls hand brake).
now you can easy compress the caliper.
when you are done with both sides, pump the brakes couple of times
now take the hex wrench again and turn the HEX screw in until tight. When tight, now back of 1/8 of the turn !! (very important)
now test your hand brake, if ok put the cover screw back on again, if not play little with the hex screw. Sometimes you have to back it of 1/4 turn, sometimes only 1/16.
thats all
(my eng is not so good to explain more clearly but you should have no problems)

How do i reset my transmitter remote on your Mazda protege doors?
Found this online, this worked on my wife's 2000 Protege:
Step 1: Open drivers door and leave open.
Step 2: Lock and unlock the drivers door using the power door lock switch on the door.
Step 3: Insert key into the ignition.
Step 4: Turn key to on position and return to off position. (IMPORTANT - use ON position NOT ACC position). Do this 3 times within 10 seconds. Leave key in the ignition.
Step 5: Close and open the drivers door 3 times. (Door should be left open after this step).
Step 6: ECU should respond by locking and unlocking the doors.
Step 7: Press any button on remote #1 2x. ECU responds by locking and unlocking the car doors.
Step 8: Press any button on remote #2 2x (etc.) Each time the ECU will respond by locking & unlocking the doors.
Step 9: Remove the key from the ignition and the ECU will respond a final time with a series of door locks and unlocks. You're done!
1997 Mazda protege. How do you change the passanger side air bag?
You have to remove the glove compartment (not sure on how many bolts, its been a while), once it is removed you can see 2 12mm or 14mm bolts that have to be removed. You can't miss these bolts as they are a gold color. Once those bolts are removed you can slide the passenger air bag out some. Next you have to remove the plug from the side of it. It is on the passenger side of the actual airbag and it is a single wire plug into the side of it. Once that is removed you can take it all the way out. The installation is the opposite of the directions that I have provided. Good luck, as that one wire plug can be hard to take out.
