How do you remove the rear defroster switch on a 1997 Mazda protege?
I just fixed a faulty switch on my '97 protégé today and it can be quite a hassle to get to it. The way that I managed was through the side panel on the driver's side (covered when the door closes). If you pry that panel out with a small screwdriver or plastic tool as to not mar the surface, you'll be able to gain access to the back portion of the three switches (cruise, defroster, and headlight dimmer). There is a white connector going into both the cruise and the defroster, and I found it easier to remove the cruise connector first to gain access to the defroster. It's just a simple tab that depresses and pulls out through the back. Once the white cruise connector is removed, it's a little easier to push aside the wires to see what you're doing. On each of the black push button switches that the connectors plug into, there are two tabs on the top and bottom that need to be depressed in order for the switch to release and come out the front. Again, I removed the black cruise switch assembly first, then I was able to use the hole created from the cruise switch to gain a little more leverage to depress both the top and bottom defroster switch tabs and remove it through the front. I tried at first removing the white connector on the defroster switch before removing the black switch assembly, but found it much easier to remove the whole thing (connector and switch still attached) then just stick a screwdriver in the tab to remove the white connector from the switch. The white connectors for the cruise and the defroster are not exactly the same unfortunately.
I'm not sure what problem you're trying to fix, but for me I was able to jumper the white defroster connector to get the system working again which supplied around 11V to the filament in the back window, verifying it was the switch that was the problem in my case. From there, those switches are a little spendy new (around $50) so I was able to take it apart, clean the contacts thoroughly, put it back together, and voila, works like a charm. A $0 fix. I got lucky though.

My 2002 Protege5 did the same thing. It happened after i had some audio equipment installed. When they pull your radio out there is a cable to the left that as you turn your nob to hot and cold u will see it move. If there is any kind of weight on the cable then it wont open and close the flap for the cold and hot. I am going home and double checking mine today! I pulled my head unit out this weekend and i needed my heat and it happened again. Its a real easy fix you can def dyi. You jsut need the keys to pull ur head unit out i got mine at walmart and you need two sets there the ford keys.in the shape of a U and you use two in each side. the center hole will have the over lappin keys it is supose to be like that. then put a little outward pressure on the keeys once clicked in and your unit will slide out. hope this helps!

Remove the cruise control diaphragm and take it out of the way to gain access from the top. Disconnect the battery negative to prevent shorts. Go in from underneath and take to finish the rest of the job. Disconnect the exhaust pipe donut connection and slide back the catback exhaust to buy room where u could slipe the alternator out from underneath. Gonna have to disconnect the muffler hangers; theres four of them. Then its taking the step in reverse and put together time.
