On the front outside corners of the seat you want to "pop" STRAIGHT UP, then slide it forward. It's just a couple plastic clips holding the corners down. I've pulled mine out a couple times for various things, easy as pie.
The seat needs to be pushed back (towards the trunk) before you can slide it forward.

I have one in a 95 cougar. TC is in need of replacement. The answer is that it is all relative! Relative to your bankroll, relative to the other mechanical aspects of the tranny, A Good TC will probably cost you at least $200.00 to $300.00, and the shop cost to disassemble it from the tranny will be at least another 200 to 300. Your gonna have maybe $600.00 into it. Why not consider having a complete rebuild for about 1,000 to 1,200, which could include a T.C. that you buy yourself. The old concept is that your already invested in the disassembly, why not go it all! Think about valve bodies, various gears, seals, etc etc. 100K is a good benchmark! TOPQuark

If you take the steering column covers(right before the dashboard)off it will be on the left side right under the signal light switch. It gets plugged in towards the driver( the connector is facing the engine.

The reservoir on my 2000 Cougar is behind the front passenger strut tower, it should be the same on your 2001, they are the same car under the hood.
- 1 can be addressed by sometimes tapping on the air flow box (little black box on top of the assembly - off of the air filter) and seeing if that loosens the dirt. If not, you need to get a special fit hex-star bit to unscrew the box and open it up.
- 3 is the most expensive, as oxygen sensors cost approx. $70 apiece to replace. If you're going to do one, might as well do both. This should be your last resort though. (Find out exactly which codes you get before investing the money into oxygen sensors.)
- 4 air flow assemblies cost about $85 and are relatively easy to put on.

Is your 'battery light' on? If it is, check that your belts are in good condition. More likely the alternator is faulty. You can have it tested (usually for free) by most repair shops and auto parts stores. If this is a new style cougar (the little one from the late 90s) expect to be charged at least 2.5 Hours for installation of a new alternator unless you want to do it yourself, which may require a lift or having two elbows on at least one of your arms.

How do you change the turn signal bulb on a 1994 Mercury Cougar?
I have a 1991, and in order to change these on the front, I have to go under the front bumper and reach in to unclamp the bulb socket, and change the bulb that way. On the back, I have to take out the trunk lining panel on which ever side of the rear is not working, unclamp the socket and change the bulb. I am not sure if a "94" is put together in this manner or not, but its worth a look see.

Your brake light ignition switch should be replaced. It works your brake lights and ignition switch, so you do need it. It only costs about $7 dollars.
if it's the key in ignition chime just remove the upper and lower steering column covers and unplug the connector that looks like a horseshoe
