More than likely the Flasher Relay is defective and needs replacement. The Flasher Relay is located on the top of the steering column, on the multifunction switch. It is not easy to find but rest assured it is there. If the lights come on but just do not flash then the flasher relay is the problem. If the lights do not come on at all, check the fuse.

It sounds like your cars computer forgot what keys are supposed to start the car. In order to get the keys back into the cars computer, you need to either have the car towed to a dealer, or have a trained and equipped lock smith come to the car, this is not a do it yourself type job as it requires a proprietary computer system and connector.
The second generation Passive Anti-Theft-System (PATS) found in this year Cougar requires dealer reprogramming if you have less than two working keys. I recommend making sure that you have at least 3 programmed keys to the car, this way if you lose one, you can still program your own key.

I just replaced the timing belt and water pump on my '96 3.0L. When I called around to the different garages in my area they wanted anywhere from $450 - $600 to do the job. I bought a book, did some searching online and did the job myself. If you look at the link below, it gives instructions on how to make a tool to hold the cam sprockets (which you really don't need unless you intend to replace seals) I sleeved and replaced seals on the cams and the crank while it had it apart. IIRC the book rate for this is somewhere around 5 hours. If you do decide to do it yourself, the front of the water pump does not "just come off" - there is a small screw that screws in from the back side of the housing - do not try to pry the front of the pump off - you will break the tab. You will need to pry the complete pump off the coolant pipe that runs under the intake manifold (there is a large O-ring on the end of the pipe that fits into the back of the pump. If you are doing the water pump do yourself a favor and replace the timing belt also.

Use the DEXCOOL- (ORANGE or RED IN COLOR). DO NOT MIX WITH REGULAR YELLOW PRESTONE COOLANT. Or, just have the system completely flushe and refilled with regular coolant. But YES IT DOES MATTER!!!! IF you mix different kinds, you WILL have problems from potential sludging, which can lead to overheated engine, which can lead to BIGGER problems. Cougar is the only FORD/MERC/LINCOLN USA product to use this color or kind of Coolant. GM also uses this. FORD of EUROPE uses it as well. It supposed to offer better cooling capabilities, but to the regular joe, can be confusing and a little more pricey. CODE BLU

One of the not so rare engineering flaws on this generation Cougar is the alternator, which will die due to poor factory wiring fairly often. There are mods to fix this problem, and Ford Lincoln Mercury dealers will see instructions to change the wiring of the alternator to be like that of the '01 and '02 Cougar2s when they go to change the Alt, not all alternator shops will necessarily know this is an issue.
If you take this on yourself, know this, the after market (ie motocraft) alternators for the Cougar are not nearly as reliable as the genuine Ford OEM product. And also, even if you take the alternator to have it checked at pep-boys or such, it will probably show that it is still good while it is indeed the issue.

The best way to know what viscosity of oil that goes in your car is to look at your owners guide. Car manufactures build vehicles with the proper oil needed. My guess is that when you find out it will be SAE 5W-30 it is perfect for V-6 and V-8 Engines never use any oil that is higher then SAE 5W-30 higher oils are bad for your engine.
