What is the Default door code for 2001 mountaineer?

Each vehicle equipped with keyless entry has its own individual factory door code.... However that five digit code is printed on the computer which is located in the same compartment as the jack in the rear of the vehicle. there will be a white rectangular computer module in there with the code printed on it which is not easy to see. you may have stick a flash light in there to see it but its there.

How do you open the hood on a 2000 mountaineer the cable is not broken?

I've had this problem with my '99. Try having someone push down on the hood (to reduce pressure on the latch) while you pull the hood release. You can also try pulling hard and fast on the release, but you risk breaking the plastic release handle. The "pull-hard" method was my solution- the handle took more abuse than I expected. If you get the hood open, grease the latch where it contacts the hood and try to run light oil down the cable. Mine was a combination of sticking latch and binding cable.

Where is the fuel filter for a 2001 mercury mountaineer?

It's just a little bit in front of the gas tank underneath the car. It's the little tiny cylinder looking thing on the fuel line. You'll see a couple green "Caution: Fuel" stickers on the fuel line.

How do you change the thermostat in a 94 ford explorer?

Unless you have recently had your cooling system flushed this is a good opportunity to flush the system, if your coolant is still fresh remove the upper radiator hose and let it drain into a large drain pan under the car. If it is not a nice bright green color then remove the lower radiator hose and let it drain out. Make sure you keep your pets inside as you're doing this because antifreeze has a very sweet smell and animals love to try to drink it but even small amounts will crystallize their kidneys and kill them.

To make this job as easy as possible you will need to remove a few things. Also, watch out for the sharp rear edge of the fan shroud. First, the air duct from the MAF sensor to the throttle body must come out (this is the large hose curving around the front of the engine going into the air filter box, if your filter has not been replaced in a while this is a good time to do a little maintenance).

Then get the accessory drive belt out of your way, this is very simple. Put a wrench on the spring-loaded tensioner and torque it to loosen the belt, then slip it off. The belt tensioner needs to be held in the tensioned position for access to the thermostat housing bolts, or it can be removed entirely. Removing the tensioner allows lots of room for you to put the thermostat housing back on.

Next, there's a small wire harness running right through the area where ideally you'd like to stick your fingers to work that third bolt once you've loosened it. You can loosen the plastic clip holding this harness to the alternator bracket and move it out of the way (from the original position on the left of the housing to the right).

The first 2 bolts aren't too tough to get to, but the 3rdcan be quite difficult. Use a 1/4 drive ratchet with an extension connected to a swivel connected to another extension connected to a 10mm socket for getting the 3rd bolt in and out has been known to work. Beware of dropping the 10mm socket in that "next to impossible hole to get the socket out of area". Perhaps you should keep a magnetic retriever handy just in case. Putting a piece of duct tape over the male ends of the connections between extensions, swivel, extension, and socket will keep them from coming apart, this trick is especially helpful during the reassembly phase.

The housing should now be loose and you can remove it. Not the orientation of the original thermostat, then install the new one with a new gasket. If you can't get it to stay then put a little Permatex Ultra Black on your finger and run it around the edge and this will make it stick.

If your belt is over 40k miles old then this is the perfect time to replace it. These cars use the new EPDM Belts which do not show signs of wear like old belts, you no longer look for cracking as a sign of needing replacement because these belts are much tougher than belts from "the good old days." Instead, the wear is measured by the gap between ribs, most auto parts stores have a little tool that slips in there to measure the distance between them and tell whether or not it needs replaced. At any rate, you should be able to get a new belt for $20 or less unless you opt for a "premium" belt. Keep the old one in a Ziplock bag with the spare tire in case of a roadside emergency (never know when you'll need one).

Once you have installed the new thermostatyou will need to burp the air out of the system. A simple procedure to do this is to add coolant and distilled water to the cold system until the fluid level is at the top of the radiator neck. Start the car and let it warm up. When the thermostat opens and water begins to circulate, the entrained air in the system should make its way to the filler neck. Keep adding coolant (50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water) to maintain the level at the top of the neck. After a while the coolant will warm up enough to start to expand, causing the coolant to start to rise in the neck on its own. When it does that, go ahead and put the cap back on, and top up the overflow bottle with coolant and distilled water to about two inches above the "cold fill" line. The system will continue to burp itself over the next hundred or so miles and it will keep itself full by using excess coolant from the overflow bottle. Check the bottle every 2-3 days and fill as needed until it no longer requires additional fluid to be added.

Abs light stays on 2003 Mercury Mountaineer?

On your 2003 Mercury Mountaineer :

A problem has been detected with the Anti-lock Brake System

It could be a fuse , a sensor , or some other problem

As long as the red " BRAKE " light is not on in your dash , you still have

" normal " brakes

* my ABS light suddenly came on and the first ABS fuse I checked was

not installed all the way (I don't know how that could have happened ! )

I touched the fuse with my finger , heard a " click " and the ABS light

went out ( just lucky I guess , but suspicious )

Replacing a front door exterior door handle on a 1998 mercury mountaineer?

Answer

Remove inner door panel for access

I found this response on antoher bulliten. Hope it helps:

Okay, just finished this project on my truck.

I'd discovered that the return springs on my drivers side exterior door handle were broken, and the handle felt "limp" or "loose". I'd read a few other posts about people who'd had this same problem. Some had pulled the handle out, and replaced the spring, others had replaced the whole assembly. I chose to replace the whole assembly.

I bought the new part from ford for $41.

Steps:

Before you begin, you'll want to just barely crack the window open, maybe about an inch or so. For me, with the window all the way up, the bracket that the window lays on interferes with the removal and installation of the door handle. You'll likely need to move the window up and down a few times (I did).

The first part is to remove the door panel. It's held in by the two screws just above the inside door handle, and about 8 of the plastic anchors. I won't go into great detail on this, since it's covered in a few places, and isn't terribly difficult.

Once you have the door panel off, you'll want to remove the one bolt which holds in the "outer" window tract and move it out of the way. I layed it in the bottom of the door as per this suggestion. With it still intact, you won't be able to see, or really work with the rod that connects the door handle to the door latch mechanism. You can see the bolt which needs to be removed, highlighted in the image below.

With this out of the way, you'll be able to see where the linkage between the door handle and the latch mechanism meet. You'll want to detatch the linkage from the latch mechanism by "unclipping" the yellow fastener that holds them together. You'll want to pull the tab on the fastener toward you. Once it's open, be sure to mark the linkage with a permanent marker indicating where it rests in the fastener. Here's a picture to describe this better. Pull the tab that the arrow points to toward you.

Now you'll be able to rotate the linkage so that it "unhooks" from the door handle. The following picture should help you visualize this.

Now, with that linkage disconnected, you'll need to drill out the rivets which fasten the door handle to the door. You can do this by holding the door handle up, and drilling from outside.

Once you've drilled out the front side, you may need to get into the inside of the door, and "finish off" the rivets from the back. The way these are designed, the rivet pulls into a sleeve, and on the inside of the door, it looks like a banana peel. You may need to bend, or cut off the banana peel parts in order to pull the rivets out from the front side of the door. Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of this.

Once the rivets are out completely, you should be able to pull the whole door handle assembly upward, then rotate the bottom of the assembly upward, and pull the handle out.

You're half way there! The door handle is out!

Now just reverse that motion with the new door handle to put it in place. You can safely rivet, or bolt the new one in place now. I've heard of many people using bolts, but I chose to replace it with rivets. I had a 1/8 x 5/8 steel rivets, which were deep enough, but the head was too small, so I used two SAE #6 washers to make up the difference. Below is a picture of the rivet assembly I used, and the finished product. You'll probably need someone to help you hold the inside washer, if you go that route. I'm sure there are rivets that are the right size, but I had to use what I had on hand.

Now re-attach the linkage to the door handle, and then to the latch mechanism. I'd test to make sure the door handle works at this point. If it does, you can proceed with assembling the rest of the door.

Replace the window tract and the bolt you removed at the beginning. Re-stick the door liner to the door, and replace the door panel.

That's it! You're done!

Why does my Mercury Mountaineer not shift into park?

This is commonly cause when the transmission is replaced and the shift linkage is not hooked up properly. Find the shift cable on your transmission and disconnect it, then put your shifter into park. The transmission linkage needs to be put in park as well. Now that both the transmission and your shifter are in park, you can adjust the cable accordingly and reconnect it. This should solve your problem.

Why does key in ignition warning and radio stay on after key is removed in a 97 Mountaineer?

My mountaineer does the same thing when there is high humidity or it has rained alot. Once things dry out it is ok again. It must be a loose wire or faulty door switch that is humidity sensitive.

What could cause a 1998 mercury mountaineer to roar and vibrate when accerlerating it is an all wheel drive?

You may have a universal joint on one of the driveshafts going out. Do you hear any clunking or tinking sounds when you put the car in drive, and then reverse? If you hear any kind of a metal sound, then I would have the u-joints checked. Have you had your tires balanced lately? Did this happen all of a sudden? You may have lost a wheel weight. Do you feel and shake or shimmy in the wheel? If you feel shake in the wheel, look at the front wheels, if you feel the shake more in the seat of your pants then it is usually the rear. Have you had the vehicle in any deep mud lately? A clump of mud may have attached itself to the INSIDE of a wheel throwing the wheel weight off. Remove any clumps of mud and see if it helps. If you do not have the roar and vibration when the vehcile is only in 2 wheel drive then that leads me to believe it's in a driveshaft component to the axle that is not being used. Some vehicle use the 2 front wheels to drive it when it is in 2 wheel drive and some use the rear. So if you are using the rear wheels to drive the vehicle in 2 wheel drive the I would look closely at the front wheel drive unit. If your shaking and vibrating are only happening when you put it in all wheel drive, then it is NOT the tires nor the clump of mud. That will happen regardless if it is in 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive.

Where is the turn signal or flasher location on a 97 Mercury Mountaineer?

It is located behind the drivers knee panel. It can be accessed from under the dash without taking the panel off if desired. The best way to described the location would be to the left of the hood release an inch or two and mounted to a metal bracket just above the bottom of the knee plate. It is an inch squared , about two long. It is mounted to the bracket using a "christmas tree" style nylon clip which releases fairly easily.
