How to Shut Off service engine light soon 2002 mercury mountaineer?

The CEL is on because there is a problem in the system. You can turn it off by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, but the light is going to come right back on when the PCM sees the problem gain.

There are literally hundreds of possibilities as to why a check engine light(CEL) comes on. The system would have to be scanned to retrieve whatever fail codes there are. Then we would use a manual (that is literally 3 inches thick)that contains flow charts with pinpoint tests, using a voltmeter, to hand diagnose, and find out what is wrong. This process can take a few minutes, it may take a couple of hours, depending on what is actually wrong.

Now here is the "why" of a CEL: What is actually turning on the CEL is the Powertrain Control Module(PCM), commonly known as the engine control computer. Inside of a PCM there are actually two separate systems. One is control, the other system is diagnostics. PCM diagnostics acts as "big brother," constantly looking over the shoulder of the control side of the PCM. Diagnostics is constantly monitering systems to see if the expected voltages and values are present.

Here is an example: If the PCM diagnostics knows that it has been so many minutes since the engine was first started, then the engine temperature should be around 195 degrees. In our senerio, if the engine is still 160 degrees, it sees a problem, and sets the CEL. The technician has to use pinpoint diagnostics to see if we have a stuck thermostat, if the Engine Coolant Temp(ECT) sensor if sending a false signal, if the wiring between the ECT and the PCM is bad, or if the PCM is faulty and interpreting the signal received from the ECT incorrectly. But the PCM is not capable of monitering everything all at once, so it basically goes down a checklist, over and over again, as you are driving down the road. Sometimes a problem can come and go intermittantly, at the right times so as to avoid detection by the PCM.

That is why sometimes a CEL doesn't always come on everytime there is a problem. Sometimes you can unplug a sensor even while the car is running, and it takes a while for the CEL to come on, just because the PCM diagnostics hasen't gotten back around to looking at that area yet.

Our senerio only talked about one area that a PCM moniters. There are dozens of sub-systems that the PCM looks at, and dozens of possible failures within each of those sub-systems, that could cause a CEL.

How do you change the transmission oil on a mercury mountaineer?

Someone on this site said you can't, but I did! First I drove the car up on front-end ramps and put the vehicle in park, set the parking brake, and put blocks behind the rear wheels. (if your crawling under the vehicle, think safety). By the way, I forgot to mention that I went to autozone or advance auto parts, (forgot which), to get an automatic transmission filter and a transmission pan gasket, along with a case of transmission fluid. The transmission filter and pan gasket comes in a kit. I then took the transmission pan off, (you'll need a very large floor pan to catch the old transmission fluid). Just take a few bolts off at a time to let the fluid drain into your floor pan, that's so you don't make a big mess. Once you drain the pan and take the pan completely off you'll see your old filter up in the front right, this filter comes off easily, (just pulls right out). Also, when you pull the pan off you'll see a small white plastic ball, (free floating), don't be alarmed, it's supposed to be in there to seal an overflow tube, most mechanics just throw them away, but I think if ford put them in there, I would put it back in. Slide your new filter in. Clean your pan lip off good, put your gasket on the pan, slide your pan into place and start re-bolting the pan. I forgot what the specs were for torquing down the bolts, but you can find that at ford.com or probably even at autozone. Be careful not to over-tighten and strip out a bolt, then you'll have a leak. I recommend you use a torque wrench for that reason, (and personal experience). Once you've got it back together, just fill-er up. I also forgot how many pints of fluid it takes, but once again you can find that info at ford.com or autozone. Keep an eye on how much fluid you put back in, don't overfill or underfill, check the dip stick. One last thing, this doesn't remove all of the fluid. What ever remained in the torque converter is still there. The only way to remove all of the fluid is to take it to a transmission shop where they have the pump to drain it completely. When you take the pan off, make sure you clean the whole pan well. And there you have it. It was about a two (2) hour job for me, but then again everything went well. Hope this helps and good luck.

Where do you find the fuel pump reset button in a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer?

In my 1997 Mercury Mountaineer, the fuel pump reset button is found underneath the kick panel, on the passenger side. After you remove that kick panel, there is a little red (I believe) button that is facing down. Just press that. There was one time that I was driving down the street and my car just cut off, and come to find out, my passenger had knocked the wire out, but it was easy to pop right back in!! it is found in the glove compartment there should be a switch in there somewhere you could probably find it easily

Why would the brake pedal on a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer go to the floor and the abs kick on sometimes when the truck is almost stopped?

Take the vehicle to the shop as soon as possible. You either have a bad master cylinder or wheel cylinder, or a broken line. This could be very dangerous.

Airbag code 37 for a mountaineer what does it mean?

Here's a site that will explain everything you need to know about airbag lights and resetting the system. http://www.airbagsolutions.com/ This website gives you the procedure for diagnosing and resetting airbag lights. See if your car is listed here. http://www.airbagsolutions.com/vehicles_list.aspx On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. When the light is on (or the tone is sounding), the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident. The flashing light on your car is telling the answer you need. On some vehicles, the light is flashing a two digit code. Once you know the code, you can most likely repair it yourself. There are fairly easy procedures that most people are capable of repairing. Airbagsolutions.com has the fault code charts to tell you what is wrong and how to fix it!

Some vehicle manufacturers accommodate systems without a scanner (like Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Infinity, Honda, Acura, Ford, Lincoln, Mazda & Mercury) and some require a scan tool. Check out these websites also for more info on airbag systems and the light. http://blog.airbagsolutions.com/archive/2007/11/18/why-is-my-airbag-light-on.what-should-i-do.aspx http://www.airbagsolutions.com/resources.aspx http://blog.airbagsolutions.com/ Also, you may want to check out this site for information on researching your own vehicle for factory recalls!!! http://www.airbagsolutions.com/nhtsa.aspx

Where is the fuel pump reset switch for a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer?

The reset switch should be behind plastic on the interior side panels in the back end. If you open the tailgate looking into the car, on the left or right side, there should be a plastic cover (part of sidewall) that removes (kinda back near tail-lights). The switch is usually hidden behind one of these access panels. Can also check if you have a floor storage in there.

Can you take out the front differential and still drive?

Technically-Yes. BUT, there are a couple of things that must be done.

1. You will need to have the outer CV joint/Spline still mounted through the front hubs and tightened. This will require you to disassemble each halfshaft and and use the outer ends or else you will destroy the hubs. OR you can buy 2 halfshafts from a salvage yard and use the ends. That way you can reinstall your originals when you get the front diff replaced.

2. Front driveshaft must be removed.

3. I believe you must have a selectable 4WD and keep it in 2WD at all times. I believe it may still work if it is an AWD, MAYBE- but it will drive your ECM nuts.

4. It is to your advantage to simply replace the defective front Diff with a New, Rebuilt or good used unit.

Are wheel bearings and wheel hubs the same thing?
