What to look for on 2000 Ford Taurus to correct P0171 P0174 Cleaned Mass air flow replaced coil 3 repaired vacuum leaks on valve covers?

First off, you can't have a vacuum leak from a valve cover. Do you mean the upper intake plenum?

Cleaning a MAF rarely solves the problem, you likely have to replace it! A good indicator of a bad MAF is incorrect BARO pressure reading. If you have access to a scan tool that will give you live data, check that. Barometric pressure will vary depending on your altitude, where I live, readings vary between 98 to 101 kpa.

Another thing to look at is your calculated engine load while you're accelerating at WOT from about 50km/h up to about 80km/h at least. You want to see the engine load hit at least 90%. At the same time your MAF reading should be well over 100gps, probably around 120gps.

Hope this helps!

Code P0171 is System too Lean (Bank 1) That can be many things. Don't spend money throwing parts at the problem. My advice is to take it to a professional who has the knowledge and tools to find and repair the problem.

I had a similar problem like this. First I was told that I needed to replace the

"Mass Air Sensor" That didn't work for me, turned out I had a leak in one of my pipes that triggered the codes. My best advice is to find a trust worthy street mechanic or small shop around the neighborhood, to find the problem. It will be way cheaper. I dont know what area your from, but the shop that fixed mine was "Grand Prix" there located at 9909 Bustleton Blvd the Northeast Philadelphia area. You can google the address to get the phone number!

Why does it sound like a bird chirping - squealing under the hood on a Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?

Found IT! I just had this problem with my 2002 Taurus. It was a constant chirping that was fairly loud, and would speed up with engine speed, and never go away.

It turns out that the engine in my car has a (I believe I have the name correct) camshaft sensing device. When it goes bad, it's because the shaft sits in a bushing, and the bushing has worn out. The mechanic told me Ford used these only on this car, and a truck. Why they used a bushing instead of a bearing makes no sense to me.

If you get a cam sensor code, consider if you've been hearing a squeak noise like a belt chirp that doesn't go away when you replace the belt. If so, use a prybar or similar tool to press down on the synchro. If the noise goes away replace both the sensor and the synchro.

Depending on the mileage, it's fairly certain you need to replace the belt. If the mileage is fairly high, it would be a good idea to replace the belt tensioner at the same time.

The tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps tension on the belt and it, too, wears down in time.

That would be the Synchronizer Assembly. Its actually a "dummy distributor" that's located under the throttle body, under the black, wide flat wiring harness cover.

The cam position sensor is mounted on top of the assembly. Its a major chore to change out and really needs to be fixed before it seizes up and does more damage.

How do reset a 2004 security system when it is causing car not to start?

I am not sure about the mercury sable but my car does that also, 2003 Pontiac grand am gt, it tells you how to reset in owners manual. How do you access 2002 Taurus - Sable spark plugs for replacement?

I would suggest taking a look at the "Related Questions" below - although most of the discussion focuses on 1996-1999 models, I suspect it's mostly applicable on into the later model years.

Assuming a DOHC 24 Duratec engine - the most problematic for getting at the rear plugs - don't be too hesitant to pull the upper intake manifold if it's going to make the job easier. That is what the key is for the earlier models.

Note: it would be most helpful is you could return here and add in what you find works on the 2002 - future visitors will be mighty grateful...

How do you take out radio in Ford Taurus?

Since the model year isn't mentioned...

The radio mounts have changed a few times over the years.

The 1986-1989 (or so) models required a few pieces of trim be removed to get at the radio.

Then Ford adopted a commonly used radio mount known as DIN (don't know what that acronym is).

Ford's approach to the DIN mount incorporated a hidden fastener on each side that held the unit in place. Inserting a small tool into the 2 holes on each side of the face of the radio release the 'catch' and the radio pulls out.

Then in 1996, the designers moved the 'guts' of the radio to the trunk, while the radio controls were integrated into a dashboard panel that include the heating/cooling controls.

This panel is removed in exactly the same fashion way as when the radio was in the dash - 2 holes on each side.

I believe this continued to through the 2005 model year (not sure after that).

When I put my 96 sable into drive the radio and power steering go out. Someone says it is a shift sensor gone bad. How do you replace shift sensor?

I have heard that too... The sensor mentioned is the "Transmission Range Sensor", which is also commonly known by it's old name "neutral safety / start switch".

If you promise to come back to this question and report back if this proves to be a solution, or not, to this problem... I'll refer you to the "Related Questions" below for specific instructions for finding & replacing the transmission range sensor.

Where is the thermostat located and how to replace it on a 2000-2006 Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?

Depends on which engine...

  • 12 valve Vulcan - traditional location at the engine end of the upper radiator hose. Down and slightly left of throttle cable bracket
    • 3 bolts on the housing -

CAUTION NOTE for Vulcan Engines: From user WRENCHDUDE: the bottom thermostat housing bolt has been known to break off and has only occurred to me on the Vulcan engine. The problem seem to happen if corrosion sets up in the bolt hole. When you break off the bolt you wont have any trouble at all noticing the corrosion.

The big headache is that the bolt is small and it breaks off into aluminum. There is nothing sticking up to get vise grips on. Trying to drill the bolt out without going out of the bolt and eating into the aluminum is the trick. I've gotten to the point at my shop here (after breaking off that lower bolt on 2 different cars) that i dont even want to change thermostats on a Vulcan engine again. You cant just use the other 2 bolts as it wont seal the thermo housing. Those bolts should have been thicker direct from the factory, they are just too scrawny.. The older the car...the more likely the problem.
    • clean gasket surfaces -
    • SPRINGSIDE TO ENGINE and small round "jiggle valve" rotated to the 12:00 o'clock position -
    • torque bolt 7-10 ft.lbs.

  • 24 valve Duratec/DOHC - lower left and attached to lowerradiator hose.
    • Remove cover blocking access to bottom of radiator - a bunch of small screws
    • Remove lower radiator hose from thermostat housing -
    • remove 2 bolts - MEMORIZE sequence of thermostat & O-ring -
    • clean surfaces -
    • reinsert SPRINGSIDE UP & o-ring below thermostat -
    • torque bolts 6-9 ft.lbs. - attach lower radiator hose.
General tips:
  • COLD COLD COLD engine FIRST
  • Drain coolant to below level of thermostat housing
  • DOHC - Great opportunity for a thorough system flushing
  • Gold/yellow colored anti-freeze per the Owners Manual
  • Read about the factory hose clamp tool!! DOHC owners are gonna want one
