How do you program the keyless entry remote for a 2002 Mercury Sable?
Have all of the available remotes in hand, put key into ignition and cycle key 8 times rapidly, ending in the on position (on & off = 1 cycle, do not engage starter), door locks will cycle, letting you know that the vehicle is in program mode. To program remote, push the unlock button on each clicker, to close programming, turn car off.
1999 Mercury Sable will not shift to drive gear?
Linkage is broken or loose - or trans pump shaft is broken ( big job)
There is a redesigned transmission vent that should fix this problem.
What type of oil does a 1991 Mercury Sable take?
Ford now recommends the 5w-20, and many people will also recommend a 5w-30, especially in warmer climates
I happen to be a big fan of the Motorcraft branded 5w-20, especially as it is a synthetic blend and is dirt-cheap, or no more expensive than many non-synthetics (dino) oils. Walmart has a 5 quart jug for under $12 and the Motorcraft filters are under $4.

Does my Generation 3 Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable have an engine immobilizer?
(This answer Covers the "Generation 3" 1996-1999 Series Ford Motor Company Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable.)
The only "immobilizer" security system available is "Securilock PATS" (Passive Anti Theft System). This system is designed to prevent the engine from being started unless a coded key programmed to your vehicle is used.
The Following Ford Motor Company Taurus and Mercury Sable had PATS available Standard.
1996 Ford Taurus LX
1996 Ford Taurus SHO
1996 Mercury Sable
1998 Taurus SE Sport
All Duratec Equipped Taurus and Sables have PATS.
The standard Anti-Theft system that comes on the 1996 Taurus lower and non-Duratec models is a Locking Steering wheel and an Anti-siphon gas filler tube.
To lock the steering wheel, remove the key from the ignition and turn the steering wheel slightly. It will lock into place. This prevents a typical "brute force" attack in which one would use a special tool to engage the key. It locks the key slot in place. Some vehicles may not have this feature. To disengage the steering wheel lock, Insert the Key into the ignition, and slightly turn it to start it, turn the wheel slightly in the direction it was locked and continue to try to turn the key. It will unlock and the steering lock will disable allowing you to start and drive the car. This may take practice as where the vehicle is parked, the direction the wheels are facing and the surface you are parked on may produce different levels of resistance, and may make it difficult or impossible to engage and disengage.
For more information on your PATS system, See the included link below for the Ford PF71 Police interceptor. It has the same PATS system implemented on the high level 1996 models as well as the newer 98 models. (PATS systems are the same for all vehicles that are equipped with it)
Although the article says that aftermarket remote starters cannot be used, this is incorrect. Many companies offer "interface" units that allow PATS to function in conjunction with your remote starter.
Where is the vehicle speed sensor?
There is more than one speed sensor on the vehicle. If you have anti-lock brakes there is one at each wheel hub. The one that runs the speedo is at the output shaft housing of the transmission on the passenger's side of the vehicle.

Change the mlps {aka} the nuetral safety switch or the selector switch on the transmission and that will fix the radio problem and the power steering problem it may have also.

What would cause white smoke to come out of heater vents?
Most likely the heater core is leaking. If there is also water on the floor and an antifreeze smell in the passenger compartment, those are also signs of a cracked heater core. Also, GET THAT TEMP GAUGE FIXED!!! You could be overheating and not even know it. Once the motor overheats, you're risking a blown head gasket, a VERY EXPENSIVE repair, or even worse, a blown engine. If steam is coming out of the vents it is very possible the motor is overheating. You need two repairs, your heater core and your temperature gauge.
My heater core was replaced since it had a hole in it. The blower was also replaced but with a used one. The guage is now working and so far, no more white smoke. Heater does not get hot though and the blower motor is very loud. Hey, ya gotta laugh a little...from one thing to another. I suppose the worse thing is over. Thank the Lord though I did not have a new car since the guy that worked on it did a number on my dash.
Symptom: on a 2000 Ford Contour, white smoke came through the vents and the smeel was acrid. We switched the car off. A few hours later, the car was fine, no more smoke, but the heater didn't work on one speed setting.
Solution: there is a resistor block which controls the blower speed in the ducting. When one of the resistors goes, white smoke is fed dirrectly up to the vents. Replacement is easy (admittedly while doing a head stand in the passenger footwell) and fairly cheap.
Suggestion: many other cars will have a similar layout. Check this out before investing in a new heater core...
How can you clean INSIDE the headlight covers on a 1997 Mercury Sable sable?
Not too long ago I took one of my headlights off the car to see if I could get into very easily - it had all sorts of condensation in it.
Now, I'm pretty good at figuring out how to *disassemble* things, but the headlight stumped me. It just wasn't readily obvious how to get to the inside.
I ended up pointing a hair-drying at the opening for 1/2 the afternoon and that cleared up the excess moisture.

What causes a 2000 sable to rough idle when cold but a smooth idle when engine is warm?
Most likely bad intake manifold gasket. When the engine is cold the engine shrinks which unseals the intake and allows a small amount of unregulated air into the engine causing it to idle rough. as the engine heats up it expands sealing the leak causing idle to improve. You should also get lean codes from the computer as the engine is running to lean. Very common problem with the DOHC engine.

not positive about this but you may want to check the grounds where they are attached to the body. you may have to replace the wire ends on a clean spot (bare metal) and re-screw them down....
Will flushing the radiator increase heat output in a Taurus - Sable?
Yes, and maybe...
A good flushing will certainly improve the flow, along with the fact you'll have nice fresh coolant.
The maybe part comes in with how thoroughly the heater core is flushed too. You'll want to ensure that part of the heating system gets a good cleaning too.
NOTE: you may want to consider have this professionally done. Repair shops, especially the specialty radiator shops are the experts in these systems - and frankly, this is a messy job. The little bit more it would cost might well be worth it.
I've done it both ways - sometimes just depending on my mood - willing to get dirty, or wanting to be sure it's done well and done right (my newer Windstar got the professional treatment)
See "Related Questions" below for more about both, and other related Taurus / Sable heating issues
