Mercury Tracer

The gas tank on a 1993 Mercury Tracer has a capacity of approximately 13.2 gallons (50 liters). This size allows for a reasonable driving range, typical for compact cars of that era.

The 1995 Mercury Tracer with a 1.9L engine typically requires about 6 to 7 quarts of automatic transmission fluid when performing a complete fluid change, including the torque converter. It's either the switch on the column or a stuck relay. I'd bet on the relay. The relays are under the hood in a black box, and are labelled. Pull the relay and see if this extinguishes the lights. If yes, get a replacement at the junk yard. I think you'll find the new part is expensive. I have repaired the switch on the column before. Requires a puller. The replacement switch is expensive, so I carefully took the switch apart while mounted to the column. Make sure you pull battery negative terminal first to disable the air bag.

First, look for obvious signs of damage. Is there leaking around the radiator? Is the alternator or serpentine belt damaged? If it's not cranking, it might be a bad battery. If it's cranking but not catching, borrow, rent or buy a code scanner and see what the on-board diagnostics says. It's a simple process and will generally give you all of the information that you need.

I now the motors are common for head gasket troubles. IF there is a sign of rich burning, I would question lack of spark or compression.

The second generation Tracer (91-95) Trio was a sport model which came with 14" alloy wheels, a trunk spoiler and a leather wrapped steering wheel. Everything else between the two cars is the same. I unfortunately don't know about later models, but I would imagine the same sort of thing to be true. ~PorkPoney I have a '94 Tracer Trio. In addition to the 14" alloy sport wheels with 60 series tires, rear spoiler on trunk, and leather wrapped steering wheel, the Trio package had dual electric control side mirrors and rear window defroster included.

Many user manual say "neither recommended nor desirable" but this has more to do with MANY people who blame every problem on ethanol. (I've heard everything form timing belt to blown head gaskets), thus, this statement covers their a** when it comes to the weirdos.

If you mean - "where is it", follow the dip stick down to the bottom of the engine and detremine which pan it goes to (this will be the oil pan). Find the plug on that pan. If you mean - "how do I remove a plug that is stuck and won't come out with a socket or closed end wrench", I would offer two options: (1) vice grips, if the problem is that the hex bolt has rounded corners. (2) drill through the center of the bolt with increasingly larger diameter drill bits until you approach the threads. Then use pliers/vice grips to turn the bolt if possible, or, simply crush the remaining bolt material and work it out of the pan. In either case, replace the bolt and don't overtighten. In an extreme case, it may be necessary to remove the oil pan to work on the oil plug.

pull the lower cushion of the back seat up, and you will find an access panel on the floor. Remove that and you will be looking right down on top of the fuel pump, which is mounted in the fuel tank. It is all pretty much self-explanitory once you find it, but PLEASE DO NOT SMOKE while doing this! Also it is helpful to have something to catch dripping fuel like a pan, as you will have to remove the fuel pump out through the interior of your car, ad it contains a lot of fuel that will be spilling out everywhere. Also, once you replace the fuel pump, I also like to replace the fuel filter. A restricted fuel filter may have aided in the demise of your old pump. It is located under the hood, attached to the firewall, below the brake master cylinder area.

Drain the Mercury Tracer radiator into a pan. Loosen the clamps at the ends of the radiator hose. Wiggle the hose to free the ends. Slide the hose off and replace it. Tighten the clamps an refill the radiator. Dispose of the old antifreeze as it is toxic to animals.

The four oxygen sensors are located two in the right exhaust and two in the left exhaust. One is on each side in the exhaust manifold forward of the catalytic converter and one is on each side behind the converter. They can be found easily from under the car. Pass your hand (when the car is cool) along the top of the exhaust if you can't see them. Trace the connecting wires to the wiring harness. Remove the wires from the harness before unscrewing the sensors. The front and rear sensors are not interchangeable as the wiring connectors are different and they work at different temperartures. The removal and installation took me twenty minutes. Don't get the sensor elements dirty.
