Lift the front of your car. It's under engine near transmission on drivers side. disconnect your battery. then disconnect 3 wires from starter. then unscrew 3 bolts those hold starter. remove starter, insert a new one and do as above in oposite way. __________________________________________________________________________ The Starter is in the front of the motor, right next to the oil pan. If you follow the positive battery cable from the battery, it will take you right to the starter. The starter is a direct drive starter and is very easy to change. be sure to disconnect the positive battery connector from the battery before you begin the removal of the starter. your bottom radiator hose may block you from lowering the starter, just move the hose and tug, it will come out. Good Luck and it should take about 90 minutes to R+R the starter.

You carefully remove the top coolant hose to the heater, not totally off, just enough so air can get out.

I own a '98 Tracer and would assume it is the same as a '97. There are two holes on either side of the radio. Many Ford radios have these holes. Two special "U" shaped tools need to be inserted into these holes and this will release the radio, (you should be able to find these tools at any stereo shop). Then just unplug the wiring harnesses (there are 6-7) and the temperature adjustment cable.

First, remove the drive belt and the drive belt tensioner. Unscrew the three nuts and three bolts to remove the outer engine's front cover. Remove the RH splash shield, the bolt, and the crankshaft pulley. Align the timing marks and then remove the old timing belt. Install the new timing belt and then repeat the steps in reverse.

Check the MAFS (mass airflow sensor) It's the silver-ish thing located right after the airbox (in front of the battery). If something is clogging it or if it somehow became disconnected or damaged, the car won't idle. On top of that, the car should not run well with a damaged MAFS at all, but, the most trouble will definetly be at idle. ~PorkPoney

In the drivers footwell , behind the kick panel ( according to the owners manual )

could be a bad hose, bad radiator, bad gaskets, bad Head...

find out if there is antifreeze leaking, and where from.

if there isn't a visible leak, check your overflow for engine oil

if the overflow is black, then it's a blown head gasket, and you;r out some bucks.

If you mean the starter motor/solenoid unit it's located near the bottom of the engine block between the block & the firewall. You access it from beneath the vehicle after removing all of the plastic mud guards.

We would need more information in order to help you. First, if the Check Engine light is on, that means that your car's onboard engine management computer has detected a problem. This could very well be related to your hard start cold complaint. Stop by any auto parts store that offers a free code retrieval service, find out what the stored fault is, and ask again, please. Be careful, though, and don't rush out and buy the parts they may recommend. A cold engine needs more fuel to start than a warm engine. The Engine Coolant Temperature sensor is the primary reporting sensor to the computer on how cold it is. I would like to know what it's telling the computer to see if it's accurate.

Everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and the library should have a professional shop manual available in the reference section(make copies of the right sections) read up and fix it like a PRO! :) good luck
