Why don't my 1994 mercury villager brake lights shut off with out disconnecting the battery?

Two plastic pads on the brake pedal which press on two switches on a bracket are missing. Meaning the switches never get pressed and the brake lights stay on and run down the battery. See a dealer to put new plastic "buttons" in the pedal.

Where is the knock sensor location on a 2001 mercury villager?

The knock sensor is in the engine V under the intake manifolds and coolant crossover pipe. As it requires considerable disassembly and an expensive new gasket set to reach it, I suggest you make very sure there is something wrong with it first. You will have to remove the upper and lower intake manifolds and coolant crossover pipe assembly to reach it. Just because you are receiving a trouble code for it does not mean there is anything wrong with it. This sensor shares a circuit with other components that often will set a "ghost" trouble code.

Why do you have to hit your starter motor to get your 1996 Mercury Villager to start what is problem?

the starter is bad and has an internal short

That answer is simplistic. On my '98, for months I could hit the starter and make it work. When I actually removed and disassembled the starter, one of the brushes was worn out. Hitting the starter moved it just enough to contact the commutator. Installed new brushes three years ago and haven't had any problems since.

How do you repair a gear shift cable on a 95 Mercury Villager Van?

Gear Shift Cable on 95 VillagerI am currently having this problem and I REALLY need some help. The symptoms are that I have trouble shifting the automatic transmission into the various gears. The indicator (above the steering wheel) doesn't work so I never know if I am in Drive or Drive1 or sometimes nuetral. About a year and a half ago, the nut which conects the gear shift cable to the tranmission came off and the inside shift didn't work at all. There was no resistance, it just floated all over the place. When I tried to put the car in park it just stayed in gear. Luckily, I didn't turn the engine off. I drove to a auto mechanic and he temporarily fixed it by puting a washer and nut on the assembly. Since then I've had one or two other mechanics look at/(adjust it), including myself because it just wasn't working right. During the last week the problems have escalated. Sometimes the car won't start at all. I figured that it was because the transmission was not exactly in PARK. Once it took me about a half-hour of adjusting the cable (I think I put it in nuetral) and I finally got it started. It ran fine for about 4 or 5 days. Yesterday, it wouldn't start again. No amount of adjusting seemed to work. I talked with a mechanic on the phone and he thinks that they cable has been stretched. Incidentally, the car has 260K + miles on it with the engine being rebuilt at 200K. The body is good and it still has a lot of life left in it. C

Can anyone tell me how to perhaps fixed a stretched cable until I can afford to put a new one in it? Do I have to make adjustments at both ends? I've attempted to take the steering column apart before, but it got very complicated. Also, is there an easy way to disable the air-bag (steering wheel mounted) while I work on the cable? Please help. Steven

I would suggest replacing the range switch, first of all, as well as the shifter cable if you think it is suspect, and perhaps the steering column and instrument cluster as well. It sound like you have multiple issues both at the transmission and in the column.

Where is the ac orifice tube located on a 1994 mercury villager van with a 3.0 liter engine?

On line coming out (near bottom) near the cannister by heater box, - (the thingy that always was sweating while a/c was working)! Is about 3 inches from heater " box" at firewall (called a plenum)!! There are 2 lines about 3/8 inch in diameter tied together with metal piece with a screw thorugh it holding it together! Come back toward front of engine about 6-8 inches, and you will see fittings there (2 different sizes 11/16 and 7/8 as I remember)! Hold these fittings securely to prevent bending tubing, _ -- you will see that the one going towards firewall has a "reduction in size"--the orfice and "finger screen" are in there! This is located on the"high pressure" line, (smaller line coming from the compressor). Of course you have to evacuate the system, -- and it is sometimes hard to remove screen from the tube- use anything that you can hold on (possibly a hook)-and pull out --if needle nose pliers aren't able to pull it out.
