I just want to add to this. It's not like Methadone is ONLY prescribed to addicts. I take Methadone and it's prescribed for my chronic back-pain. Methadone is prescribed as a pain killer, because it IS a pain killer, just like any other pain killer. They DO use methadone to get patients off of other drugs because it's not AS addictive as other opiates. Plus heroin users are prescribed methadone to get off of it. Pain killers get a lot of bad rep. but if you take them responsibly then they can be VERY helpful. I was on Oxycontin for a long time and switched to methadone because I lost my insurance and methadone is a lot cheaper so it's a nice alternative, plus I like it more because you don't have to take it as often. I will admit though it would be nice NOT to have to take something for pain everyday but that's what life dealt me so that's what I am stuck with. But for the people out there trying to do away with pain killers like what I take, to them I say "to bad it isn't YOU stuck with the pain I live with everyday". I guarantee anyone that lives with the type of pain I live with would think twice about wanting to get these pain killers outlawed.
