MRI

MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. It is a particularly useful scan for neurology, cardiology and oncology patients. Questions on how they work, their development and uses can go in this category.

Grid controlled X ray tube?

a grid is a device placed in front of the image receptor which only allows xrays to travel directly through from the tube and prevent xrays which have been "scattered" from passing through to the image. This gives a much clearer resulting image. Grids are generally only used on thicker body parts where scattered xrays are more of an issue

If you have had scoliosis all your life and it shows on an MRI you had 6 months ago when you were diagnosed and treated for arthritis is the scoliosis considered a pre-exsting condition?

== == With many chronic or progressive conditions, determining the point in which the disease started is not easy. For repetitive injuries, usually, it's about 1 year prior to the day the diagnosis was made or patient's first visit. With conditions like idiopathic scoliosis, it does not necessitate treatment unless it's found to be at certain stage. So just because you've had scoliosis doesn't make it pre-existing. Point at which requires treatment should be considered the date of onset.

Yes. ---- Maybe not? "Preexisting condition provision" means a policy provision that excludes coverage for charges or expenses incurred during a specified period following the insureds effective date of coverage, as to a condition for which medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment was recommended or received during a specified period immediately preceding the effective date of coverage. What do MRI results mean when they say level C5-C6 moderate diffuse spondylotic disc protrusion noted causing ventral compression with thecal sac?

c5 and c6 are vertebrae in the neck arthritis can cause a growth of bone that ends up putting pressure on the nerves passing out of the spinal chord into the body, in this case I think your arms.

Is a bone scan better than an MRI scan?

A bone scan, or x-ray is simply a different type of scan than an MRI. No kind of scan is better than another, it simply depends what the scan is trying to ascertain.

What does MRI scans features so periventricular leukomalacia means?

My son's MRI impression reads -MRI scans features s/o periventricular leukomalacia. The Neurologist told me it is a scar of brain. I want more explanation on this regard. While my son was under going treatment for ALL, he had high fever due to infection. One night he had convulsion followed by coma. The doctors told me he had no chance of survival since he had brain remarriage .It was their fault because instead of giving him platelates prescribed by the relived doctor, the reliver doctor had given him plasma. CTscan could not be done at that time because my son had allergic to a tranqualiser. He was two yrs old. Since he is having petit mal now at the age of 15,we consulted a Neurologist who advised for MRI and EEG.

Which is more expensive a ct scan or a mri scan?

This question is not a simple answer. Most places have different charges for the same test. Some place can be two to three times higher than others in the same area. In other words the CT may be higher than the MRI at one place, but across town it might be the other way around. You can call and ask for charges. Ask if this is the final price or just the list price. Many places give discounts to people paying cash or who will pay their bill off all at once. Or if you are insured , your insurance carrier may have negotiated a cheaper price. Please keep in mind most people doing the scan and in the radiological area do not know charges but they can help direct you to someone who can help you.

When i got my mri report it quotes minor spondylitic change in the cervical spine and lower lumber dehydration but i still have balance walking and breathing problems?

spondylitic (although more likely to be spondylotic) changes and lumbar disc dehydration are both extremely common findings on MRI scans when looking at the spinal column of older people. The discs become dehydrated as we get older and that is why we shrink. spondylotic means wear and tear or degeneration.

Neither of these cause breathing problems or imbalance when walking and they were unlikely to have been caused as a result of a problem in the spinal column.

What is the purpose for magnetic resonance imaging pr MRIs?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a technique that uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make detailed images of organs and structures inside the body.

It provides good contrast between the different soft tissues of the body, which makes it especially useful in imaging the brain, muscles, the heart, cancers, and other abnormalities without the possibly harmful effects of X rays or gamma rays.

What does a MRI mean if they say multilevel osteophytosis is seen?

Osteophytosis is little outgrowths from the end of bones. It is part of arthritis - or 'osteoarthritis' - and is nothing to be concerned about in itself. 'Multilevel' means that it occurs at several places along the spine.

This simply means arthritis of the spine.

What is the difference between CT and MRI images from a physician's point of view for example the appearance of different tissues?

CT suited for detecting cancers, viewing bone injuries, diagnosing lung and chest problems.

MRI is suited for examining brain tumors, spinal cord injuries, soft tissue in ligament and tendon injuries,

-CT Provides good details about bony structures. MRI Less detailed compared to X-ray

-CT Good soft tissue differentiation especially with intravenous contrast. Higher imaging resolution. MRI is better at telling the difference between different soft tissues and between normal and abnormal soft tissue

-CT scan is faster than MRI.

-effective radiation dose from CT ranges from 2 to 10 mSv. No Radiation for MRI

-CT can pose the risk of irradiation. Not the case of MRI

Does cigna cover cost of mri procedure?

yes, but usually a prior authorization is needed. Ask your doctor's office to check on this for you and be sure to stay in network.

Can you eat or drink before a ct scan of the spine?

Black coffee is fine, see below. On the Day of the CT Scan * Do not eat any solid food for 4 hours prior to your CT scan. You may drink clear liquids up until the time of your scan. Clear liquids include water, black coffee or tea, apple juice, clear soda or clear broth. UCSD Medical Center

What is the difference between the old ct scan and the new ct scan?

There are differences inside the machines that make the newer machines faster and give better images. There is a difference in how the tests are done now compared to 20 years ago.

For example: older machines might not have seen changes smaller than a marble or a golf ball. Newer machines may see changes smaller than a pin head and make for earlier detection. Earlier detection is always better.

Is it legal for a person who gives you a mri SCAN tell you what is worng?

Usually the person giving you the MRI is a technician, so they may not know exactly what is wrong per se. If the doctor is present, then there would be no problem. Its hard to imagine the MRI tech giving a diagnosis on the spot
