Water comes out of all tailpipes no matter how minimal. The combustion reaction of burning gasoline (C8H18) and oxygen (02) produces carbon exhaust (Cx) and water (h20) thus leaving water in your tailpipe. Water can also appear in an exhaust pipe due to condensation. Water in an exhaust pipe is perfectly normal and is of no harm to your vehicle, or any vehicle.

Exhaust fumes are considered to be extremely dangerous and can seriously injure or even kill someone. The most dangerous type of exhaust fumes are the ones who contain carbon monoxide, which is regarded as the commonest single cause of poisoning in both industry and the home.

The W124 230e motor is a fuel injected 4 cylinder petrol motor incorporating Mercedes reliable CIS injection. Having owned many cars with this engine they are almost indestructable with normal use.
Whilst all Mercedes engines of this time do use oil between service, it is fair to say that the smoking of the engine accompanied with oil consumption of greater than that recommended points to something wrong. Yes, they do wear out, but some times the signs mask the cause.

Firstly the colour of the smoke offers the first hint to the problem.

Black smoke, rough running, soot on the tail pipe may well be a fuel problem.(too much being burnt in the cylinder during normal running)
Grey smoke is usually oil being burnt in the the cylinder.

Lets start with the fuel issues. This can be caused by many problems:

Leaky fuel injectors, leaky cold start injector, faulty fuel regulator, faulty fuel distributor or any combination or interconnection of the above.


The grey smoke could be the oil seals on the piston being severely worn or broken and sucking oil up from the sump into the combustion chamber. Most commonly it is wear in the head that causes smoking, usually just on start up then clearing shortly after this is particulary noticeable if the car was parked and due to the warmth of the oil running in the valve gallery.
Mercedes heads usually need attention below 200,000 km due to the wear in the valve guides and the perishing of the valve guide seals under the cam shaft. Bear in mind many cars need new engines at this stage.

Cars that have been overheated or run low on oil can suffer irreversible damage.

Always check all rubber tubes and breathers for cracks and the tubes between the rocker (cam) cover and the air cleaner for moisture and other grundge build up as when blocked they can cause pressure to build in the engine, sometimes causing oil to go where its not wanted.

Always try and localize what each cylinder is getting.
Removal of the plugs for inspection is the first step. Refer to colour guides for diagnoses.
A compression test for each cylinder is useful in some cases but not all.
The combination of the two above usually reveals a lot.

eg all cylinders plugs except one is clean and other is sooty, with a corresponding low compression on that cylinder, points to rings perhaps.

It is normal for the outside cylinders to show wear signs earlier than the inner ones eg 1 and 4 .

Possibly coolant in the exhaust from a blown head gasket. Fix ASAP. Do not drive until the is fixed. Severe engine damage will occur. Yep. White smoke = heat problems. Blue smoke = oil problems. Heat damage more urgent attention. my carb. went bad and it kept blowing head gaskets,white smoke,the head was good but the bad carb made my piston rings go bad and i was getting oil on the first intake and first exhaust plugs closest to the radiater, i got new engine

Depends. If the fire is from a chemical reaction from a natural fuel (like wood), there will more then likely be smoke first. If the fire is electrical or chemical from a highly volitile fuel (like gasoline), the fire will be nearly instantanious. There's too many unknown variables to give a 100% correct answer. Putting those variable's aside, however, this should be close enough.

Check your oil and see if it has a chocolate milk look to it if not the get a compression tester 30$ at auto parts store and go through each cylinder and each compression test should be close to each other if one is dramatically different you have a cracked head gasket and can run around 1200$ to fix if its a chocolate milk look in your oil then its a cracked head gasket they can crack in those two places and white smoke coming from the tailpipe is usually an indication of a head gasket if the temp gauge is above normal.

One thing that will cause it is leaky valve seals At high RPM the engine burns up the oil so rapidly there is little or no smoke but when the engine is idling at a stop light the oil builds up on the stems and valves faster than it is burned and when you take off it is blown out and burned thus smoking for a while In this case you need a valve job Bad rings may contribute to this too but usually the car will blow smoke more at higher speeds if the rings are shot

Well, any change to flow of the exhaust gases will change their sound. That said, how much of a change in sound depends on how much you change the flow. Tips, normally go over an exhaust pipe and perhaps extend it a very small amount. It is unlikely this would cause much change...up or down.

The check engine light can be triggered by any detected fault that would affect the emissions output of your car.
