Mufflers and Tailpipes

I don't know about the catalytic converter (typically Rangers -at least the 4.0L V6 has 2 catalytic converters). But for the rest of the exhaust system : with 2 prebend pipes, gaskets and the muffler, you are looking at anywhere from $ 361 to $ 457.00 as of Dec 15, 2011. - it also depends on the shop who does the work. One of a number of things can happen if your exhaust pipe becomes clogged.

- If the obstructing object isn't too tight, the engine will likely simply blow it out, easily if loose or with quite bang if tight. Something like dirt, snow, or if someone is pranking you with a banana in the tailpipe, they'll all just blow out. However, something like a rock, dent, or crimped pipe won't clear out.

- If the object wont blow out, but is only partially blocking, the engine will likely still run. If the obstruction is minor, there may be no noticeable effect at all. If the blockage is moderate, loss of power, decrease fuel mileage, and perhaps an audible hiss or whistling sound might be heard.

- If the blocked is sever, the engine performance will be more harshly effected, with large loss of power and RPMs being limited as the engine can't rev up. Overheating might occur as the hot gases can't escape away from the engine properly if run long. A loud hiss or whistling sound can often be heard. The engine will often act as if it's in too high of gear, lugging knocking and eventual stalling.

- With a complete blockage the engine may start, run a few moments till the exhaust pressure builds up to a point it's to great for the engine to expel enough to fumes to be able to breath in fresh air and fuel to burn, at which point it will stall and not restart. Note, some car exhausts will have a small drain vent in the muffler to allow condensation to drain out. Those cars might restart after some prolonged cranking, but will stall again once the pressure is too great.

In all cases, there is a risk the exhaust system my fail, if old or rusted. Parts could break loose or the muffler might "explode" apart from the pressure. However the good news is, NO permanent damage should be done to the engine once the obstruction is cleared. The engine only fails because it's not able to breath properly, not because of any mechanical damage.

Unlike some might think, NO exhaust fumes should enter the passenger compartment so long as the pipes are in proper working condition. They will block any fumes from leaking into the passenger spaces.

Note, on smaller engines, particularly 2 cycle engines, their exhaust can become clogged on their own from carbon and soot build up internally. This is not uncommon for this type of engine, used on older dirt bikes, boats, atvs, weed weeders, and other small engines.

When you burn fuel and air in an engine the products contain A mixture of CO2, H2O and N2. H2O contains dissolved oxygen, which combines with the Iron (Fe) in the steel and produces the compound Fe(OH)3 , the all too familiar rust.

An exhaust system carries waste away from the car's engine. It helps reduce the amount of smoke and pollution that leaves the car and also reduces noise.

Pretty much has to be a blown head gasket.

There is no reset button or procedure for the Check Engine light. The CE light is reset with an OBD2 scan tool. If the gas cap was just loose, then just tighten it, (3 clicks), and after you drive for a few driving cycles the CE light should go off. If it does not then the loose gas cap may not be the problem. This will require the ECU to be scanned with an OBD2 scan tool.

This water is actually moisture that is liquefying with the aid of your exhuast heat inside the pipes. If you live in a humid area, this water will continually drip from your tail pipes, other wise it will stop after the engine warms up.

Yes! This can easily be done with a rubber pipe coupling bought at home depot.

Actually, mufflers ate the thing that quiet your engine. If you hear a deep sound, you likely need a new muffler.

Any one without a muffler. Put a straight pipe on and it'll sound sweet.

Two cycle engines have an oil gas mixture and if there is too mush oil to gas you will see it burn as white or gray smoke That or your valves are bad.

The car might not start. If it does start, the banana might shoot out the tailpipe. If it is up in the muffler, it might smoke or burn.

That would be clasic exhaust valve guides and or valve stem seals. They leak oil into the exhaust ports, when you start it the oil burns causing the smoke. when it is running the leak is so mimimal because the oil burns before it leaks into the exhaust port. had same thing on mine they had problem with valve gaskets i just did rebuild with upgrades on lifters and its fine some upgraded gasket kits. Little expensive but worth it.

Black smoke usually indicates an overly rich fuel/air mixture. In other words the engine is getting too much fuel or it is not being burned properly. Blue smoke is oil burning. White smoke is coolant in the combustion chamber.

i borrowed the valve adjustment kit from my dealer today.......there is a three week wait for service so i`ll try it myself... i will post some pointers when i get it done,how hard can it be?top dead center,take a measurment .find the right shim,compress and replace then check it again.and do not loose any thing into the hole or turning the thing upside down to get it back may be an option LOL gerryfraser@sympatico.ca

Excessive heat, but what would cause that I don't know.

A muffler going bad can be caused by many things. But generally, it is either contact with the ground causing a dent, oil burning causing sludge and residue in the muffler, or corrosion from age and moisture in the exhaust pipe causing a hole or the collapse of baffles.

mine did the same thing and the scary part is it would still crank.it was my fuelpressure regulator.when it goes bad the motor doesnt know so it sends the extra gas into the intake and straight to the pistons and dumps it out the exhaust.first get away from the car and let it dry thoroughy and unhook the battery cable.have a mechanic verify regulator problem.youll have to change oil since the fuel will slip past thee rings and into the oil pan and may cause scarring of the cylinder walls.pull plugs out and let it dry out before reassembling.keep a check on the muffler after repairs are made and pray that it cranks because mine hasnt yet.i will do a compression test and i recommend the same for you.good luck.

If it is welded on, you can grind away at the weld until it either falls off, or you see what appears to be a crack all around the weld ( you can then pry it off). If it is clamped on, then you should just have to beat the rust away with a hammer and chisel. But really, mufflers are so cheap you should just get a new one.

Could be an injector spraying at below the pressure that it should. Or a head gasket. Check your radiator for milky fluid, if not you can determine the bad injector by loosening the nut at the injector line/injector until the sound of the engine changes. The one that does the least change to sound/rpms is the bad one. You can have it tested at your local dealership.
