Yes, wont hurt the car at all, you will lose some low end torque but gain top end power. You cannot legally run no muffler unless the car was made without one. The only recent car that was made without a muffler is a Dodge Neon SRT4, and its even legal in California, go Dodge!

Causes for backfiring normally wont change from one car make to another, backfiring in a nutshell: A backfire is when the ignition of fuel doesn't take place in the ignition/combustion chamber, it(a backfire) can take place in the intake or exhaust. It can be caused by a fuel to air ratio not being correct, also if the timing of the spark is not just right that could cause it to back fire. It could be running lean with not enough fuel and too much air, or could have too much fuel and not enough air. It could be because the intake valves are not shut when the combustion takes place, therefore the combustion would take place in the wrong spot. The most likely cause are from: 1. Incorrect timing, the timing issue could be caused by bad wiring/ or bad ignition. 2. Incorrect fuel to air ratio, bad fuel filter, low fuel pressure-caused by weak fuel pump. Most cars will have the same cause for backfiring, as long as it's an internal combustion engine it shouldn't differ...

Most likely not, its probably just condensation in the pipes. If it was an engine problem, it would be a blown head gasket and if the car hasn't been running really hot that's probably not your problem.

If oil pressure light not on and noise not on top in valve cover area, pull plugs and have a freind bump engine with starter. You can feel pressure build in cylinders one at a time if piston on upstroke if you place a finger (gently) up to each plug hole. 1 bad-thrown rod on that cylinder-all bad-chain. Start there.

I can only tell you what a mechanic told me about my Hyundai (also a '97). He checked the car out thoroughly and there were no problems. He said that sometimes they manufacture the vehicles so that the check engine light will come on at a certain mileage or after so many years have passed, to have the customer go in for repairs or check ups. My mechanic turned it off, but it came back on later. It has no problems he could find. The Check Engine Light comes on when the computer detects a problem with the emissions system. It can be as simple as a loose gas cap, bad spark plugs, or as serious as a bad catalytic converter. One common cause is a bad O2 sensor. Have the computer scanned to retrieve the fault code. That code will help to lead you to the problem. If you have not replaced the plugs and plug wires on this vehicle, that would be a good place to start, especially if it has over 75,000 miles.

If it blows blue smoke when starting up, that is usually the valve guides need replacing. If it constantly blows blue smoke, you are looking at piston rings. Either way oil is getting into the combustion chamber. If it's valve guides, you need to have the heads looked at, if it is rings, the bottom of the engine needs to come out.

As a jeep owner who has redone my exhaust several times. i know all about how to swap out parts and what not. the ebst way to get out your old muffler is by using a sawzall and cutting it on the tail pipe end first. then u cut the front. If you plan on redoing your exhaust more than once you will need a new tail pipe because there will not be enough pipe left to clamp anything too.the whole process takes about 45 minutes. I own a 94 yj. the front pipe is 1 and 7/8 inches in dia. and the rest is 2 1/4 (i think). Just to let you know what i did, i cut out the cat and muffler and put in a cherry bomb and ran a straight pipe to it, and it sounds really good. it cost me about $40 to do that.

I have rebuilt several engines from street rods to circle track cars. Most rebuilt engines will have a small amount of blowby and smoke some out exhaust till.rings seat into the cylinder walls. Don't panic just yet put about 5000 miles on it driving at all speeds if it don't clear up check compression on each cylinder. Also valve seals will cause smoking also make sure they are correct and positive seals suck. Umbrella are better.

The smoke could get into the house due to several reasons: there is no wind above the chimney; the chimney is blocked, the smoke is being directed away from the chimney due to other areas of low pressure in the house. You could probably rectify the problem by raising the chimney so that it catches more wind, cooking closer to the chimney inlet, making chimney diameter wider so that there is less resistance to the passage of smoke.
