When were possums introduced to New Zealand?

The brushtail possum (Trichosurus Vulpecula) was first brought to NZ from Australia in 1837 with the intention of establishing a fur industry. This proved unsuccessful and possums were allowed to spread throughout the country destroying native bush and having a devastating effect on native wildlife. There are estimated 65-70 million possums in New Zealand and possum control is a never-ending and possibly unwinnable battle. Possum is now considered a green fur, that is, a fur that is good for the environment because the animal it comes from is such a destructive pest.

Which spray has recently been banned in the US?

Given the related/alternate questions I could only imagine we're referring to pesticides.

Such a list has been added to the "related links" area.

The Environmental Protection Agency allowed the residue tolerances for an insecticide named carbofuran (trade name Furadan) to expire at the end of 2009. This in essence bans the pesticide from all US uses, since the manufacturer will not continue to produce it.

What is a Pest analysis of car industry?

PEST analysis stands for "Political, Economic, Social, and Technological analysis" and describes a framework of macroenvironmental factors used in the environmental scanning component of strategic management. It is a part of the external analysis when conducting a strategic analysis or doing market research and gives a certain overview of the different macroenvironmental factors that the company has to take into consideration. It is a useful strategic tool for understanding market growth or decline, business position, potential and direction for operations. The growing importance of environmental or ecological factors in the first decade of the 21st century have given rise to green business and encouraged widespread use of an updated version of the PEST framework. STEER analysis systematically considers Socio-cultural, Technological, Economic, Ecological, and Regulatory factors. * Political factors include areas such as tax policy, employment laws, environmental regulations, trade restrictions and tariffs and political stability. * Economic factors are economic growth, interest rates, exchange rates and inflation rate. * Social factors often look at the cultural aspects and include health consciousness, population growth rate, age distribution, career attitudes and emphasis on safety. * Technological factors include ecological and environmental aspects and can determine barriers to entry, minimum efficient production level and influence outsourcing decisions. Technological factors look at elements such as R&D activity, automation, technology incentives and the rate of technological change. The PEST factors combined with external microenvironmental factors can be classified as opportunities and threats in a SWOT analysis. PEST/PESTLE alongside SWOT and SLEPT can be used as a basis for the analysis of business and environmental factors. One can apply this analysis on any industry, or company. Good Luck!

How do you get rid of mosquitos in your pool?

A good idea is to place a bunch of candles or a big mosquitoe machine catcher around your pool.

You should not have mosquitoes breeding in your swimming pool as they do not like moving water. They are most probably brreding in shrubs, grass or plants around your pool. They will breed anywhere standing water collects. The best mosquito repeller is cat nip oil. It is far more effective than DEET and does not have the possible health implications. Vists www.insectsaway.com for more info and for a range of mosquito traps in Spain

You could also use animals that eat mosquitoes or special pool chemical stuff that you can buy, killing the eggs.

What happens when you put mothballs in gas tank?

This was an old trick to extend a low tank of gas, do not try it on cars with modern fuel injected engines.

Naphthalene mothballs will dissolve in the gasoline, providing more hydrocarbon "fuel". But it does not vaporize as easily as gasoline and could cause plugging up of fuel injectors. Older engines with carburetors were more tolerant of thios than fuel injected ones..

How do you rid the porch of swallows?

I started hanging CD's around my garden and put foil on the bottom of my tomato plants. The quick motion and reflection scares them away and they can't figure that out. So far I have not lost another tomato!

Had this problemI tried putting things like statues/large figurines of owls and squirrels in the area they are nesting. It seemed to work for a couple of months. Use oilOnce swallows have nested in your eves, they will return every year with their young to nest again. They are attracted to the shelter of overhangs and especially love stucco/cement plaster walls where their mud sticks so well.

Pressure washing the nests off will work, but you will have to stay on it 24x7 for a couple of weeks while the birds frantically try to rebuild what you keep washing down.

A fake owl will work, for about 30 minutes until the birds figure out that it doesn't move. Owl boxes might in some places, but in our area, the swallows always return first.

There is one thing swallows do know and respect. That is how well their mud sticks to the walls. They move on immediately if the mud does not stick to the walls.

We had a terrible swallow problem in our stucco walled breezeway - the perfect condition for swallow nests. When we moved in, every spring would be a Hitchcock-ian nightmare of swarming birds and beating down swallow nests.

One spring about seven years ago, I braved the breezeway in the midst of a hive-like swarm of dive bombing swallows, and sprayed canola oil on the walls right near the ceiling. All the birds were gone in less than 8 minutes. For the rest of the year. We had one come back the next year to try it again. One more zitst from the spray bottle of canola oil and we have been swallow free for eight years. These birds know when their mud don't stick and they leave to find a place that does.

FYI - the canola oil evaporated in the summer heat in about two weeks without leaving a residue on the walls. BTW - I got the idea from someone in Pennsylvania who had put grease on the rafters to get rid of barn swallows.
