What is the vigerous and invasive vine with heart shaped leaves that makes no flowers but produces little potatoes that fall to the ground and make more vines?

Genus IpomoeaMorning glories and other sweet potato relatives are all in the Genus Ipomoea. Nearly all have heart-shaped leaves and attractive flowers. Most produce a tuber underground; perhpas there is a species or variety or growing conditions that allowed for the plant to develop a tumor elsewhere.

I think it might actually be Air Potato which is in the Yam family. It is from Africa and very invasive in Florida and it does have heart shaped leaves and produce bulbs above ground that fall to the ground and make more vines. See the link below to the University of Florida Extension page.

These are a lovely plant growing on a trellis..They DO have flowers..you just can hardly see them. They are in a cluster like a bunch of grapes, very very tiny, and have an intensely fragrant smell...I love my vine, and try to cut it down before all those "potato seeds" fall to the ground...save some of the larger seeds, and share with a friend. I also have one in a very large pot with a home made trellis. If you do that however, put a large stone in the bottom of the pot..it WILL blow over in the wind.

Ireland. The Irish Potato Famine began in September 1845. Potatoes, upon which the Irish diet was almost totally based, began to disappear. Due to the abundance of potatoes in America, many Irish people began to migrate to the United States. It is ironic, though, that the disease which originally caused the famine was mistakenly transported from North America to Ireland.

Why can we use potatoes as a food source but not wood?

  • the polysaccharides in the potato (i.e. long chain starches) can be broken down by cooking into short chain starches that can be digested by enzymes in the human gut to glucose, which provides nutritional value
  • the polysaccharides in in wood (e.g. cellulose, pectin) cannot be broken down by cooking or by enzymes in the human gut, so it provides no nutritional value
