But which Norwegians and what sort of rice and in what dishes. Until the last thirty years of the 20th century (before the discovery of North Sea Oil made Norway a rich country) Norway was a modest economy with a reliance on agriculture, fishing and the merchant marine. Yes I know they also had significant expertise in engineering and science but nonetheless even urbanised Norwegians still had strong links with agriculture and fishing and their preferred diet reflected this. The staple carbohydrates would be breads and potatoes. For the average Norwegian in the mid twentieth century rice would have put in an appearance in the diet but it would have been round grained rice and cooked with milk and sugar to form a sweet pudding for dessert.I believe the Nowegians still have a traditional rice porridge which is served on Christmas eve. I should think that many Norwegians born in the 1920's never tasted long grained rice as an accompaniment to meat or fish dishes as long as they lived. Certainly that would be the case in the United Kingdom which if anything had more cause to be introduced to long grained rice because of its overseas empire. The Norwegians had no empire and in fact only gained their independence from Sweden quite recently in their history. The widespread consumption of long grained rice with curries , meat dishes , fish dishes in Northern Europe is really a twentieth century phenomenon.
