The search engine visits billions of websites and creates a database or repository of sorts of the various sites. As it turns out a search engine that searches multiple sites but not the entire web is also known as a meta search engine (although the definition is not very popular). Google Custom Search Engines (CSE's) are an excellent example of such search engines.

You can return to search companion witha simple registry change but there are pre-requisites. 1. You have to be logged in as a user with admin rights. Since the change is in HKEY_ LOCAL_USER it only applies to the logged in user at the time. 2 You have to open WIndows Desktop Search and click on use Search Companion at the bottom of the left pane for the entry to appear in the registry to begin with. Once these are met you go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Desktop Search\DS] and set the key "ShowStartSearchBand" to 0. The user's profile will bypass WDS.

It could not be an issue of browser to disable Google. It can be the problem of your net connection.

I did envisage it would be successful, but it is not. Google announced that they will shut it down by the end of 2010. I was very passionate about it, particularly the concept of Wave and the cool real-time collaborative editing function supported by the so-called operational transformation technique. Quite a few systems also claimed that they have used the same technique, the most impressive one being Codoxword (http://www.codoxware.com), a MS Word plugin that allows real-time collaborative editing of a Word document. Since Google also has this technique, I wish Google will use it in their future Google Docs so that the spirit of Google Wave can be inherited.

Its more down to personal preference. i happen to like Google because that is who i have my email account with and i use chrome. it's also a clean homepage unlike some other homepages who often put news. weather and so on, on the page as well.

No, there is no way to do that. Chrome only remembers the urls you've visited in the past. If the website that resides at that url has changed in the meantime, clicking its url in the Chrome history will take you to the newer version of the site. Your only chance to see an older version of a website is if you can somehow find it in old cached Google results.
