Serpentine Belts

The Tensioner is spring loaded-use a long wrench on the center of the pulley 2 release tension-DON"T UNBOLT anything-IF it doesn't feel springy then find the bolt in the center of a (the) pulley that is.

Loosen the alternator tensioner bolt. The alternator belt will become loose. Remove the alternator belt. Put the new alternator belt on and reverse the process.

The water pump is driven from the timing belt on all 4cyl new beetles. The serpentine belt only drives the A/C compressor, Alternator, and Power steering pump. The water pump also come with plastic impellers that are prone to failure and can cause stange overheating issues...

First take a picture of the belt layout or draw a diagram. Next locate the belt tensioner, it should be located right next to the power steering pump. Use a socket wrench with the appropriate size socket and turn the tensioner counter clockwise until the belt is loosened and remove belt. Then put the new serpentine belt on in the same order as the diagram or picture. The tensioner will be the last step of the belt placement. If you put the belt on correctly you should not be able to put the belt on the tensioner. At the point use the socket wrench and turn counter clockwise to loosen, this will allow you to place the belt on the tensioner. Hope this helps, good luck

You should be able to find a shop manual at your local library with the right info...make copies as they are usually only in the REFERENCE section....good luck:) loosen the alternator two bolts on the bottom and one on top pull the alt towards the front and the belt will come right off
