Where is the starter in a 1974 Super Beetle?

Stand on the right side of your car with the hood open, right next to the right rear fender, and look between the engine and the firewall. There's a 17mm nut back there; the bolt it's screwed onto is holding the starter in. The next question you have is, "how do I change it?" Very simple. You need a 17mm wrench, a 13mm wrench, probably a set of vise-grips, a jack and jackstands, and a new starter. You may also need a very small bolt--1/4" x 1 is fine. 1. Unhook the battery, jack the car up and put it on jackstands. 2. Use the 17mm wrench to attempt to loosen the nut I just told you about. Either it will loosen or it won't. If it won't, crawl under the car, find the starter and clamp the vise-grips to the top bolthead--it's on top of the starter in a REAL convenient place. Then crawl back out and remove the nut. 3. Crawl back under the car and remove the other 17mm nut, the bendix wire off the solenoid (it pulls off with your fingers) and the starter lead from the battery (13mm nut). Remove the starter with both hands, because if it conks you in the head it's really gonna hurt. 4. If you needed the vise-grips to get the top bolt out, take the top bolt (not the nut!) and the little bolt I told you to get to any welding shop. Stand in front of the guy with the most dirt under his fingernails, hold the starter bolt in one hand sticking straight up and down, lay the little bolt on the big bolthead with its head hanging over the side, and tell the guy "this is the starter bolt out of a Volkswagen, can you weld these two bolts together like this?" Five minutes later he'll be done. The intent of this second bolt is to hit the starter. When it does, the bolt will turn no farther, and you won't need vise-grips ever again. Pay him, thank him nicely and return home. 5. As they say in the books, "installation is the reverse of removal."

Can you replace tires on a 2002 CRV 2 at a time or since it's all wheel drive will that cause a problem?

No it will not cause a problem. Replace as needed. AnswerI managed a tire store for about 7 yrs and so here're my 2 cents. If the tires you don't plan on replacing have 50% or more wear, I would go ahead and replace them if you have the means to do so. This will improve your ride quality on all four corners. I replaced all 5 on my crv with Michelin. This way I can do a 5 tire rotation. If one ever is damaged beyond repair, you'll have 4 of the exact same.

How do you change a 2006 VW bug battery?

I just completed this project and I would advise taking it to the dealer because finding a replacement battery the same size is almost impossible. The dealer should replace the battery at no charge if you buy it from them. I ended up having purchasing a new from my local VW dealer because Interstate told me it was going to take two weeks to get a replacement. If you want to try, here's what I did:

  1. Make sure you have the radio security code to re-enable the radio when you're finished.
  2. Turn the radio off and remove the ignition key.
  3. Disconnect the battery, negative side first.
  4. Push down on the tab to release the wiring junction box from the top of the plastic battery box cover.
  5. Cut the cable tie where the plastic air tube is connected to the front of the plastic battery box cover. You'll need a new one when you re-assemble.
  6. For clearance during re-installation, disconnect and remove the air intake tube between the filter box and the engine. This tube has two other flexible air tubes connect to it that will need to be disconnected.
  7. Remove the left side of the plastic battery box cover by pulling straight up on the tabs on the top of the box cover.
  8. At the front of the battery at the bottom, there is a 13mm bolt holding the battery in place. You need a long extension to remove it.
  9. Loosen, but don't remove, the bolt. If you try to remove it all the way, you might drop it. (I dropped mine and needed a long magnetic retrieval tool to recover it)
  10. Lift the battery out, left side first. You may have to orient the battery in a vertical position to remove. Do this quickly so you don't spill any of the battery acid.
  11. Because of the tight fit when you replace the battery, you'll need to remove the 13mm bolt and clamp before installing the new battery. There's plenty of room now since the battery is gone.
  12. Clean the battery terminals if needed and re-install new battery.
  13. (This is tricky) Replace the battery hold-down clamp. Once it is oriented correctly over the battery and bolt hole, it will stay in place with having to hold it.
  14. Replace the 13mm bolt.
  15. Replace the rest of the parts in the reverse order they were removed.

71 VW bug do they have heaters?

The only heat you have comes from the engine, the fan shroud pushes air through the hoses coming off of it, down into the heater boxes, they pick their heat from the cylinder heads and piston jugs, the air from the fan then pushes it through the heater boxes, through the heater channels, and up to the front the car where it defrosts your front window, also the heat will come out from under the rear seat through the flapper boxes, and also in the front at the door frame.
hope that helps.

Do classic VW beetle's have water cooled engines and why not?

The classic beetles were air cooled primarily because of cost. Air cooled engines are a lot more simple - there's no water pump, water jackets, thermostat, etc which makes the engines cheaper to produce.

Where do you add oil to VW super beetle?

Look at your engine. You will see the fan belt. The top pulley is hooked to the alternator. The stand the alternator is strapped to has a tube coming out of it at a 45-degree angle toward the left side of the car, and there's a cap on the tube. (If you have an Official Volkswagen Cap, there's a hose going between this cap and the air cleaner...that hose is a smog control device called a crankcase ventilation hose, so don't throw it away.) Unscrew the cap; that's where the oil goes.

How do you replace a timing belt in VW?

Highly recommend taking it to a dealer. One if you get the timing off a tooth then your engine will crash. Meaning the piston will come up and hit the valves and bend them. Then you need a new engine.

I just got the vacuum lines repaired but the check engine light is back on with the same error code p0411 - secondary air injection system incorrect flow I have a volkswagen jetta GLS 1.8T please help?

I have the same issue right now and will be doing what I'm about to tell you after I get home from work today.

Check your Secondary Air Pump which is under the front of your car. If that has any cracks or anything to that extent you might have to replace it because air would be leaking. I found information here.

How do you change out an alternator on a 2001 vw beetle?

* Isolate the battery i.e - remove battery terminals. (Ensure you have your radio code if applicable!)

* Unplug wiring connector and undo any electrical terminals, noting which wires attach where (take a photo before you disturb anything, if your memory is not so good! =D )

* Loosen alternator securing bolts to slacken off alternator belt, remove the belt and inspect for cracking / damage, and replace if necessary.

* Remove bolts and remove alternator.

Refitting is the reverse of removal, but ensure that the tension on the alternator (and therefore the alternator belt) is good when bolting back down. The belt should not twist by more than 90 degrees either way or feel slack.

If in any doubt, take it to a professional.

How do you bypass the voltage regulator on a 1974 super beetle?

You can't. German engineers have been improving the design of these vehicles since their conception in 1939, that regulator is there for a reason and there is a risk of electrical fire by bypassing it.
