Blood

Blood is a bodily fluid consisting of plasma, blood cells, and platelets that is circulated by the heart through the vertebrate vascular system, carrying oxygen and nutrients to and waste materials away from all body tissues. In many species, it also carries hormones and disease-fighting substances. In this category, you will find questions about the blood in your body, including blood types, blood diseases, and the function of blood.

Can a cockroach have blue blood?

Cockroaches have blood, and are COLD-blooded creatures.

Cockroach blood is not red because they do not use hemoglobin to carry oxygen. In fact their bloodstream is not used to carry oxygen either. They use a system of pipes called tracheae to bring the oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from their tissues.

As a result other factors determine the blood color.

Male cockroaches have relatively colorless blood.

Larval females have colorless blood.

Only adult females which are producing eggs have a slightly orange blood because of the protein vitellogenin which is made in the cockroach liver (its fat body) and transported through the blood to the ovary. This protein like chicken yolk is orange because it carries a carotenoid, which is a vitamin A like molecule needed by embryos to develop normally.

What color blood do ants have?

What caused your dogs skin to turn blood red?

The underlying cause would be increased blood flow; however, there are several reasons why this could have occurred.

One is trauma - a scrape, scratch or bruise to the skin or underlying muscle would cause the skin to turn red. This would be more visible if the overlying hair had also been removed.

Another is infection, which can be either bacterial or fungal in nature. There is usually a foul-smelling greasy exudate on the skin and it tends to itch like crazy.

Third would be an allergic reaction, which could be to anything from fleas to food to pollen.

Your veterinarian will be able to help sort out exactly what happened, as well as prescribe appropriate treatment. A wound would be treated with cleaning, fur trimming and giving it time to heal; an infection needs antibiotics of some sort and allergies need avoidance therapy.

What foods help to lower your creatinine levels?

Is there salt in blood?

No. Osmosis will cause the red blood cells to release all of their moisture, and at the same time keep all of the materials INSIDE the cell wall. That's where the color comes from. If you use fresh water, or salt free water, osmosis will attempt to balance the salinity between the inside and outside of the cell resulting in cell rupture, called lysis. Salt water does not dry up the blood, it just makes it easier to clean.

Is Alcohol a truth serum?

Seagrams 7 is the best truth serum. It has worked countless times on boyfriends to get them to open up and tell all kinds of unknown info. As a seasoned drinker I have been amazed at how this specific drink seems to get people telling their business. Just make sure you don't drink it as you will be inclined to spill your guts as well.

What is the colour of a crab's blood?

Yes they do, but you wouldn't really notice because their blood is blue (or can appear clear) in colour due to a lack of hemoglobin. Also, they don't have blood vessels, their blood just moves around in gaps between the organs and muscle tissue, so if their skin is broken they can bleed to death.

What can you eat or drink before a fasting blood test?

Water. Anything else will affect the glucose levels...including black coffee.

Can you chew gum before a fasting blood test for cholesterol?

I've been fasting before the cholesterol test I'm supposed to have later today. I absent-mindedly started chewing a piece of Eclipse sugar free gum. At first, I thought the gum would have no affect on the fasting blood test, but then I read the nutrition label on the packet of gum. One serving contains 2 pieces of gum, and I only chewed one piece. So, dividing the figures from the nutritional information in half, here's the content for one piece of gum: 2.5 calories, 1 g carbohydrate (that one gram of carbs is in the form of sugar alcohol.) There is no fat, no sodium, no sugars (other than the sugar alcohol which is listed separately), and no protein.

This is how the label reads:

Serving Size 2 pieces (3 g)

Calories 5

Total Fat 0g

Sodium 0 mg

Total Carbohydrate 2g

Sugars 0g

Sugar Alcohol 2g

Protein 0g

I'll either call the lab and ask if my fasting blood test will still come out accurately, or I'll just go in and ask them after I get there. When I know the answer, I'll add it to this posting.

I got this from a lab that performs these tests because I was looking for the chewing gum answer too. So, here's your answer.... :-( Cause I'm starving....

Should I fast prior to lab work?

If your doctor orders lab work, ask if you should fast

before having the lab work done. Fasting is needed

for some lab tests because certain test values change

following the digestion of food. The measurements of

blood sugar (glucose) and some blood lipids (fats and

cholesterol) are common examples.

If you are required to fast

Please read the following fasting instructions

thoroughly. By following these instructions,

you will help us to collect the most accurate

specimen for the test your doctor has requested.

Fasting instructions

If you're asked to fast prior to lab work:

Do not eat or drink anything (except water)

during the eight hours prior to having your blood

drawn or other specimen taken.

Note: If your physician has ordered lipid tests,

you must fast for at least 12 hours.

You may drink only water; no juice, tea,

coffee, diet soda or other beverage.

Do not smoke, chew gum or exercise. These

activities may stimulate the digestive system and

alter test results.

Continue to take prescription medications

unless your physician tells you otherwise.

Check with your physician about over-thecounter

medications.

After your specimen is collected, you may resume

your normal diet and activities.

Questions and Answers

What will happen if platelets were absent in the blood?

If there are no platelets in the blood, you are not able to stop brokering for example if you cut your skin you would not be able to stop the bleeding because there are no platelets to induce the clotting action which stops bleeding and loss of blood. The condition is called Thrombocytopenia.

Does blood of the mother and fetus mix?

Yes and No. During the normal course of a pregnacy, No. The mothers and babies blood does not mix or circulate together. The umbilical cord attaches to the placenta. The placenta is the "container" that keeps the baby "isolated" from the mother. The fetal blood flows through the baby, out the umbilical cord to the placenta and no further.

The placental membrane separates maternal blood from fetal blood.

Oxygen and nutrients in the maternal blood in the intervillous spaces diffuse through the walls of the villi and enter the fetal capillaries. (this unfortunately means that bad things like alcohol and drugs diffuse through the membrane, also.)

Carbon dioxide and waste products diffuse from blood in the fetal capillaries through the walls of the villi to the maternal blood in the intervillous spaces.

Just like the walls of your own digestive system, the food you eat does not come into direct contact with your blood, but the nutients get into your blood and are transferred to all parts of your body. Now for the Yes part of the answer. Certain circumstances can cause them to mix, like miscarriage, abortion, and birth. This is when diseases can be transmitted, or problems with blood RH incompatibility can occur, but that's a whole other WikiSubject.

Do beets act as blood thinners?

It would be the opposite. Beets have vitamin K which helps thicken the blood. However one source here on the internet said beets don't have enough to make any effect on the blood/warfarin...however, beet GREENS have a lot more vitamin K and will throw off the effect of blood thinners.

If you're going to have surgery, eat vitamin K things. Or they will give it to you in an inter venous.

Do plasma screens really have plasma?

Yes. The cells in a plasma TV contain a mixture of gases that are typically found in neon lights. When a current is passed through the cell, it ionizes the gas, turning it into a partially ionized plasma. This plasma differs from the plasma found in the Sun, stars, and interplanetary, which is typically fully ionized, and hotter.

What is an example of a plasma?

1 Gases in discharge tubes (fluorescent lamps and neon signs)

2 Welding arcs

3 Lightning

4 Auroras

5 The upper atmosphere (the ionosphere)

6 Stars and the Sun

7 the solar wind

8 interstellar gas clouds

9 The fireball made by a nuclear weapon

10 Comet tails
