What does a construction supervisor do?

The following is written by and according to the U.S. Department of Labor and particular to the job of a construction manager.

Construction managers plan, direct, and coordinate a wide variety of construction projects, including the building of all types of residential, commercial, and industrial structures, roads, bridges, wastewater treatment plants, and schools and hospitals. Construction managers may oversee an entire project or just part of one. They schedule and coordinate all design and construction processes, including the selection, hiring, and oversight of specialty trade contractors, but they usually do not do any actual construction of the structure.
Construction managers are salaried or self-employed managers who oversee construction supervisors and workers. They are often called project managers, constructors, construction superintendents, project engineers, program managers, construction supervisors, or general contractors. Construction managers may be owners or salaried employees of a construction management or contracting firm, or may work under contract or as a salaried employee of the property owner, developer, or contracting firm overseeing the construction project.
These managers coordinate and supervise the construction process from the conceptual development stage through final construction, making sure that the project gets done on time and within budget. They often work with owners, engineers, architects, and others who are involved in the construction process. Given the designs for buildings, roads, bridges, or other projects, construction managers oversee the planning, scheduling, and implementation of those designs.
Large construction projects, such as an office building or industrial complex, are often too complicated for one person to manage. These projects are divided into many segments: site preparation, including land clearing and earth moving; sewage systems; landscaping and road construction; building construction, including excavation and laying of foundations and erection of the structural framework, floors, walls, and roofs; and building systems, including fire-protection, electrical, plumbing, air-conditioning, and heating. Construction managers may be in charge of one or more of these activities.
Construction managers determine the best way to get materials to the building site and the most cost-effective plan and schedule for completing the project. They divide all required construction site activities into logical steps, budgeting the time required to meet established deadlines. This may require sophisticated estimating and scheduling techniques and use of computers with specialized software. (See the section on cost estimators elsewhere in the Handbook.)
They also oversee the selection of general contractors and trade contractors to complete specific pieces of the project-which could include everything from structural metalworking and plumbing to painting and carpet installation. Construction managers determine the labor requirements and, in some cases, supervise or monitor the hiring and dismissal of workers. They oversee the performance of all trade contractors and are responsible for ensuring that all work is completed on schedule.
Construction managers direct and monitor the progress of construction activities, sometimes through construction supervisors or other construction managers. They oversee the delivery and use of materials, tools, and equipment; worker productivity and safety; and the quality of construction. They are responsible for obtaining all necessary permits and licenses and, depending upon the contractual arrangements, direct or monitor compliance with building and safety codes, other regulations, and requirements set by the project's insurers.
Work environment. Working out of a main office or out of a field office at the construction site, construction managers monitor the overall construction project. Decisions regarding daily construction activities generally are made at the jobsite. Managers may travel extensively when the construction site is not close to their main office or when they are responsible for activities at two or more sites. Management of overseas construction projects usually entails temporary residence in another country.
Often "on call" 24 hours a day, construction managers deal with delays, the effects of bad weather, or emergencies at the site. Most work more than a standard 40-hour week because construction may proceed around-the-clock. They may need to work this type of schedule for days or weeks to meet special project deadlines, especially if there are delays.
Although the work usually is not considered inherently dangerous, construction managers must be careful while performing onsite services.

What is commencement of construction?

Commencement of construction could also be called a "Notice to Proceed", which is an official construction document permitting a company to begin work on a construction project. Most often, the date on this document is the date at which the clock starts for the finish of the project. Most construction schedules are set to begin from the signing of this document and the first activities are based upon having this in hand.

Disagree. A notice to proceed in your hand does not determine that anything other than that has occurred. Intentions to proceed do not rise to the level of actual construction. A document in hand does not permit a reasonable person to conclude any construction has occurred. Commencement of construction implies the physical nature of construction as differs from the many planning stages of construction. Commencement of construction would begin from the point of excavation, having a building permit in hand, and continuing on a daily or regular basis until completion. PLANNING IS NOT THE SAME AS CONSTRUCTING.

What are the common Pitfalls in construction industry?

From a project management point of view. There exist a tension between the

consultants that the client of a new construction project employs and the builder ( Contractor). The Client employs certain proffessionals such as the Architect ( Principal Agent), Engineers, Q.S etc as consultants to supervise the successful delivery of His new construction project. However The Builder ( Contractor) is also employed via tendering and acceptance of tender, to bring the Clients building plans complete and successful. So in essence all these proffessionals are employed to contribute to the final building product and needs to work hand in hand and in co-operation with each other. For they all have a common goal and purpose and need to work towards it. There tends to be however certain lapse in the unity of this team of proffessional when project completion dates need to be met, and reputations are at stake. And subsequently, consultants want to defend themselves by attacking the builder and the builder defends himself by attacking the consultants. There are a number of reasons for this pitfall, such as lask of information to the builder from consultants or failure of the builder to express timely notice of information needed or clarity on information given to mention but a few. The result of this pitfall is very unfortanute, and is best avoided. The result being the common goal is shifted and indiviuals aiming to please clients needs to cover their backs, rather than the ultimate goal of delivering a successful building project where unity can achieve more than anything else.

That being said, the best interests of the client must never be forgotten by the consultants when dealing with the contractor and the Contractor should remain

committed to the advice and instructions of the consultants who look after the clients interests, for everyone to achieve the common goal and maintain the respect of each party in the Building project.

How much would areas be affected by road construction on a plantation?

Making a road requires a lot of space, the area of the road itself + at least same width for machines to drive back-and-forth and store sand and other required materials.

I´d say you'd be safe to reserve 2,5 times the width of the road.

After the work, the extra areas can be taken back for planting.

Do note, machines cause pollution to the close by plants, so I would not plant easily absorbing plants near the construction site.

How do you draw line of balance for repetitive works in construction industry?

after u draw the chart , u decide to work on the early finish or the late finish , and this called t1 .. and nw u have 2 get the time that the activity end on and that's called t2 ,

t2= t1 + ( (N-1)/R )

N = number of repetitive units

R = Rate = number of crew / duration

now draw y-axis and x-axis , then draw a parallel line to x-axis at point N on y-axis ,, where the y-axis represent the number of units start from 1

and the (lower) x axis represent the t1 and the ( upper ) x-axis represent the t2

What are the advantages and disadvantages of lead products in construction?

Disadvantages: -Lead is very toxic, its use can result in pollution of the ground and more importantly of water supplies. This leads to the contamination of drinking water and can cause hazards to human health as well as disrupting entire ecosystems. Advantages: Because of its toxicity, lead is being bought less and less around the world, which of course results in the lowering of its cost. Plus lead melts at a relatively low temperature, making it great for solder. However, recently the Chinese have show an interest in buying mass quantities to manufacture batteries made from a base of lead so the price of this metal may soon rise.

What does a Screed Operator do?

A paving machine typically has a crew of three... the paver operator, who drives the paver, and the screed operators. The screed is what spreads and levels the asphalt, and the operators adjust the screed plates to ensure that the roadway is laid smooth, is the right thickness, and is adjusted for the road crown when applicable.

Who created the Central Intelligence Agency building-Whose idea was it-Why did they think of it-For what reason?

The headquarters building of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Langley, Virginia was (insofar as can publicly be determined) designed by the US General Services Administration with almost certain input from architects and security experts. The contract to build the building was also administered by the GSA.

The reason for its construction is fairly obvious: EVERY Government Agency has its own headquarters building for the centrallization of its staff.
