If you ask your friend to control her child when it is hurting your child and she ignores you, there's only one thing you can do: remove your child and yourself to another place, somewhere her child can't bother you.

Humans, by nature, are designed to survive in groups, by group support. Other species that have this trait are canines, equines, bees and ants, to name a few. The 'families' of these creatures may differ in how they operate but each are dependent on their group for their own survival. An individual separated from the group will have difficulty surviving independently, if at all.

Some humans are able to learn how to survive on their own by educating themselves on survival techniques, but these individuals are very rare and would have needed the support of a group to survive in their formative years. And, like the character in the movie 'Cast Away', they are very glad to return to the company of people when that's possible.

A person's individual family is important because the family nurtures that person while a helpless infant, provides physical and emotional support and comfort, keeps them safe and healthy, and provides knowledge as the person grows to adulthood. That is the basic function of a family in society, even if it doesn't always work out to this ideal.
