Alternators

Unlike a dynamo, which is self-energising, an alternator requires some current from a battery to energise its coils. If the battery is good, the starter motor will work, and there will be power to generate ignition sparks; but if the alternator is faulty, it may not be able to recharge the battery sufficiently, and the car would eventually stop.

If you know this situation applies, try to bump-start the car (say, by rolling downhill), as the starter motor makes a huge draw from the battery. That way, the battery will stay fresh and will be able to provide sparks for longer.

it is internal. you can replace it if you know what you are doing, but it is easier to buy a whole new alternator

Answer: BS. it is not easier to buy a new alternator. it's like 5 screws and a few nuts to take out a voltage regulator, and they cost 10 bucks. an alternator costs a lot more than that.

First, you disconnect the battery negative.

Put a socket and ratchet or breaker bar to the belt tensioner, twist counterclockwise to loosen the slack on the serpentine belt. While you have slack on the belt, pull it off the alternator pulley. There'll be a quick connect with some electrical lines going to the alternator. Disconnect that. On the back side of the alternator, there'll be a stud with a nut on it, and connected to that stud will be a wire with a ring terminal (this wire will run from the alternator to the battery positive). Disconnect that wire. Not being familiar with this specific model, I don't know exactly where the bolts are or how many there are, but you'll see them if you look around the alternator.. should be two or three bolts. Remove those, and the alternator should come out.

I believe you mean a Raybestos alternator. It would all depend on the manufacturer.

Yes, and you can use any charger on an Optima battery as long as the voltage is regulated properly. If your charger will remain on indefinitely, the voltage should be at 13.8 volts maximum with a one-amp maximum current. We would only recommend trickle charge for charge maintenance purposes only.

Autozone says it's an 80 amp alternator. I don't know if this is the max it should put out or the average. I'm guessing the max.

Check your red battery cable line. The same thing happened to me and it turned out to be that the red battery cable line was damaged. I had to replace the terminal because the cable line damage cuased it to burn out.

We had the same problem on a 4-runner that we own, the battery was draining as soon as the truck was turned on, but the alternator, and regulator were both good, and we changed the battery so it was new and it was still doing it. It ended up being a grounded wire to the back power window that stopped working, that came disconected and was grounding out on the metal on the truck and sucking the battery dry. Has anything quit working on your vehicle that is power? If so, that is most likely where you will need to start, and you will need a wiring diagram because not necessarily will the wire be grounded on one side or the other, it can be tied in to other power areas on the vehicle.

Did you check the voltage regulator? As the apperance my change from Model to Model, the voltage regulator connects to your aletrnator directly. I believe the regulator tells the alternato exactly how much power is needed to safely operate the vehicle. I had same prob with my 77 mustang II. Swollen battery, rotten eggs, and too much power.. Replaced the battery and voltage regulator and my problems were gone. Hope this helps.

Don't believe a word AutoZone tells you. My battery died so I went there and they tested my battery and alternator and told me it was the battery. So I bought a new battery and 2 days later, dead again. Went back and they tested again and THIS time, it was the alternator. I went nuts on them and ended up getting both my battery AND alternator for free for their mistake that left me stranded at 12am.

Using a 1/2 inch breaker bar, rotate the tensioner clockwise to allow the beli to be romoved. Remove the belt from the auxiliary components and carefully release the tensioner. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Disconnect the two electrical connectors from the alternator. Remove the support bracket. On 1991 models or earlier, remove the AIR pump-to-alternator bracket bolt from the alternator. Remove the front lower bolt. Remove the rear lower bolt. on 1991 and earlier models, loosen the AIR pump-to-alternatorbracket bolt on the AIR pump and swing the bracket up and out of the way. Remove the alternator.

The standard alternator amperage on all 2001 Suburbans is 130 amps. The base, stripped-down Suburban with little or no options had and alternator output of 105 amps, but there were not many of those.

well several things could occur. your lights look dimmer than normal, your alternator light will come on (if you have one, or its not blown), your battery light will light up(if you have one that is not shorted out or blown)and your car will run sluggishly thae finally die in mid transit from point a to point be. hope this helps.

The alternator basically is a unit that is turned through a belt, normally called the 'Fan Belt'. As it turns it produces an electrical charge which provides electricity which is stored in the car's battery.

If you have ever left your lights on overnight to find a flat battery in the morning, there is not enough charge or power in your battery to start the engine.

You use jumper cables which connect from one battery to the flat one which allows your battery to use the other as a 'slave'. once the car is started, you let it run for a while. During which time, the battery is re-charged by the alternator.

Back in the days of the Model T Ford, before the existence of alternators and battery technology, cars were started using crank handles. These cars didn't have alternators or electrical systems, so there was no battery to charge.

In summary, every modern gasoline/petrol and diesel engine needs an alternator to be able to keep the battery charged while driving.

check the tension of the belt . it should have a 1/2 inch deflection . also check the condition of the belt. maybe it is cracked or may have to much stretch in it. a good belt that i have in my car is a Mighty belt. i have been using this brand for years.

Something is on draining your battery overnight. Any light or any relay. It can also be your battery has a dead cell draining it overnight.

as with any alternator remove the bolts holding it to the engine then it should come off easily of course removing the belt is recommended. then either replace or service the alternator. On older marks an easy way to check the alternator just hold a screwdrivers tip to the rear center of the alternator, if it sticks the alternator works. if it doesn't replace it
