While a vehicle engine is running the alternator generates electricity to run the car and operate things like the radio, power windows,seats,doors,wipers, and the spark plugs to ignite the fuel making the car go. The excess electricity recharges the battery which is primarily used to start the car in the first place. Without the alternator your car will only run off the battery which will eventually run down and wear out much quicker and need to be replaced. As the battery is dieing its efficiency degrades affecting your performance until it fully dies then your car will not go.

It should put of 13.5 to 15.5 volts. The alternator is an 80 amp alternator.

Yes it can...you may have a bad cell in the battery.. even with a bad cell the battery may have enough charge to start the vehicle but it then puts the alternator under a heavy load as it tries to charge the battery...Have them both tested....

There is also the possibility that the bearings in the alternator may be worn which could cause excessive heating....

This part forms the field circuit. It is a rotating part with a magnetic field that induces current into the stator

It depends on a particular model. You should expect at least 2 bolts.

The alternator oil pipe on combo van leaking does feed the vacuum and the return pipe.

REmove Upper rad support and rad fans and air box. Remove bolts from alternator and remove serp belt. REmove alternator though gap left by fans and air box.

I changed mine, as the dealer was way out of order price wise. The trick is to remove passenger side tire and put jack stand under ball joint and then lower your lift so that the lower control arm with ball joint takes the weight. You then can rotate the alternator enough to remove from underneath the car. Be sure when replacing the upper bolt, that it goes through the correct mounting hole for the bolt.

Remove the right wheel, then get down underneath it, remove the splash shield, back off the adjuster, remove the belt, and unbolt it.

I would connect the L lead to the dash light for alternator fault and from there to the ignition switch and the S lead directly to the alternator output connection. If there is no light, use a 35-300 Ohm resistor between the L lead and the ignition switch.

It can have a big variety in price from around 150$ escalating up to 1000$ depending on your car's make, model, year, etc...

I have not tried this ...but looks very possible . Remove the air cleaner housing and tube . Think that there is 3 bolts to remove from the alternator . disconnect alt wiring .Move alt to pass side of car ...and lift up .

The alternator is mounted down low on the back side of the engine.

I will assume you are serious. It doesn't produce volts. It simply limits them. It should allow up to 14.3 or so and shut off when the battery is fully charged.

Something is on drawing power. Can be any light on the vehicle or a relay stuck.

Depends on which engine. 3.0 v-6 has a serpentine belt. Move the tensioner with a wrench to get the belt off, then replace it. If a 2.5 eng., loosen the tensioner with 13 or 15 mm (can't remember which size), but back off the tensioner bolt. Then, you'll see the belt loosening. You may have to back off the bolt inside the tensioner as well. Re-tighten the same way.

I would suggest you invest in a repair manual. It cost around $12 at most auto parts stores, and will contain the info you need to complete this repair and many others. It will pay for itself with this one repair also go to autozone.com and look at the online repair manual

IF you remove the right front tire and guard this will give you easy access to your alternator. You will need to jack your car up. It sits underneatdh the engine to the right of the starter. If you locate the oil filter you'll see it right in front of you. Just disconnect your battery and then the pplasitc guard on the alternator held on by a single bolt. Then disconnect all wires. Next, Unscrew the two bolts that runn across the bottom. Put a 14mm on the tensioner to put some slack in the serpentine belt and pull the 14mm wrench. Take the belt from around the alternator and then remove the bolt on the top right of the alternator. that one in particular is a little hard to get to, but take your time and good luck. I f you are still having trouble then get the Haynes Repair manual for the Saturn S-series 1991-2002. You can find them at any auto perts store and they are great to have!
