the most obvious sign would be that the light on the dash would be on. but if you start the car and put a voltmeter on the battery terminals it should read between 14v and 14.5v

The best way is to drive to the nearest auto parts store and have then check it. But you can check the voltage output yourself if you have a voltmeter. Set the meter to the 20 volt DC scale. Start the engine and connect the red lead to the positive battery post and black lead to negative post. You should read from 13.5 to 15.5 volts output from the alternator. If not it is bad.

Battery light usually means alternator not charging. Most common solutions would be be a bad alternator, bad connection, or loose alternator belt. If the battery and alt test ok than check the connections to the alt. You may also have a battery drain (something that is staying on and killing the battery)

If you have a battery load tester, it is also an alternator tester. Put it on your batt., a good battery should read 12 volts--start the engine and watch the needle, it should go up to the 13 volt range. Turn on all the lights, heater fan on high, then check the guage, it should still be in the 13 v. range. If at any time it goes below 12 volts, then the alt. is weak.

Very Carefully. With a long screwdriver. Wedge the alternator to apply tension to the belt with the screws loose. Still applying tension, tighten the bottom bolt first, and while still apllying tension, the top.

Watch out for zombies while doing repairs at all times. You may not be able to spot them with your head deep in the car. Have a spotter working with you for your own safety.

The serpentine belt is usually the belt that winds over the pulley wheel that drives the alternator, which charges the battery. If the belt is missing or mis-routed, the alternator won't turn and the battery will not be recharged. If the belt is slipping on the alternator pulley, the battery may charge insufficiently or irregularly. Causes for a slipping belt include heavy wear, contamination with oil or other fluids, and misadjusted tension. There is usually a positioning arm connected to the alternator (and/or another pulley around which the belt travels) that can be, and must be, adjusted. Set it to apply enough pressure on the belt to provide the tension needed to drive all the driven pulleys without slipping. There are tools that will measure that tension and manuals that state the proper amount.

1997 grand marquis has same problem Tonight I found the head and tail light and interior light on. Light switch was in automatic on/ off. Key was off. Turned off Light switch from auto to off and lights went off. twice in the past week have had dead bat in morning. Hope that it is fixed.

check and make sure it is charging the battery, should be between 13 and 14 vlots when car is running. if less you have a wire not getting power from the alternator to the battery.

If you have power windows, try checking the wiring and motor for that. When a power window motor is bad or the wiring has a short in it, it can run continuously even with the car off causing the battery to be drained. If that checks out fine, check other automatic devices in your vehicle. There are a number of them that could be malfunctioning and be absorbing too much power from the battery. a little.

Somewhere in the car is a load that is killing the battery. If you have had any electical work done recently you should be returning to have it looked at. It could be a bad motor somewhere (antenna motor, window motor, blower motor). You can disconnect the negative terminal from the battery until you get it fixed. It won't hurt anything.

if your alternator is only 5 mon old you could have a bad connection on the alternator that isn't makeing good contact , or it could have a bad stator i would take the alternator back were you got it have them test it if its bad and it has a bad stator it might have warranty on it and they will replace it .

either the alternator is dischargeing the battery or it is going flat just because its not getting re charged

If the battery and alternator are both good, Test them to be sure, then you need to take a multimeter and verify that the power from the alternator is actually reaching the battery. It could be a simple wiring problem

I don't belive Alternator and Starter are even close to each other on this vehical, I don't even know of a vehical built since 1925 with such a setup, There are some very new models being tested.
